“Lovely property and location, let down by the important details”

Roffy House is a lovely cottage in the grounds of a bigger house down a turning off a minor road in the lovely Dorset countryside near Corfe Castle: an idyllic location, from which you can hear the steam trains on the local preserved line. It is ideally located for all the Purbeck attractions from Bournemouth through to Dorchester and we made some memorable visits to Brownsea Island, Swanage, Studland and Old Harry Rocks, Wimborne and Kingston Lacey, Monkey World and Dorchester. The owners were kind enough to allow our children to wander in their garden: a boon as the cottage has virtually no outside space of its own.

The property itself left us with mixed feelings. We got the impression that the cottage is rarely let: though it may just have been that we came at the start of the season. there was a slight air of neglect: windows were dirty to the point of obscuring views and the place was not cleaned to a very high standard. There was a distinct 'drains' odour problem which we reported to the owner who acknowledged this was not the first occurrence. A septic tank issue, I suspect. The bathroom was to a good standard but the kitchen is very cramped with no dish-washer, virtually no surfaces for food preparation or serving and the most annoyingly dysfunctional halogen hob I have ever encountered. Beds were too soft to be comfortable; the spiral staircase makes such a banging/creaking noise that using it without waking one's fellow sleepers is impossible and the internal walls are thin such that watching TV when children are supposed to be sleeping is not an option. The advertised wi-fi does not work; a nuisance when trying to keep in touch with one's business that finances the family holidays!

Despite the appeal of the property's location and exterior and the pleasant owners, we would return to the district but sadly, not the property itself.

“Cosy cottage in peaceful setting”

We stayed at The Music Room in August 2014 as a family of 2 adults and 2 children. The cottage is set in a quiet location off a track which itself is off a narrow lane leading to Corfe Castle and Swanage.
We found it's location ideal as a base for the attractions in the area. Corfe Castle is in walking distance which is best done using the footpaths over the fields rather than along Sandy Hill Lane which is narrow and offers little refuge from traffic for pedestrians in many places.
The good points of the cottage are, that while it is small there was plenty of space for our family. The facilities are generally good with the beds being comfortable.
Not so good points while we stayed. The shower was not working for the week, neither was the wifi which was down for 4 of the 7 days. The table tennis table was not available as advertised. The cottage needed a good clean in some places as well. Lastly, as I type this review the webpage for the cottage shows rooms which are in the main house and not available for anyone renting The Music Room.

Lovely thatched cottage, with gorgeous terrace outside for breakfast / wine on the decking. Located in a wonderful area, we really enjoyed our stay here with our small dog (it is perfect for small dogs)

“What a marvellous place - despite the Christmas weather!”
Reviewed January 14, 2014 for a stay in December 2013

I took my partner and her family to Roffy House from 22nd December to 29th December 2013. As some may recall - the weather was rather exceptional!! In spite of the hurricane-weather, Roffy house was beautiful, warm and ideal as a Christmas "bolthole" in the countryside. Set midway on the eastern arm of the Purbecks - it was surrounded by wonderful countryside.

A beautiful cottage a lovely garden, quiet (apart from the hurricane weather at the time!) and ideally equipped with everything you need. Good oven, plentiful hot water, oh-so comfy beds and sofas, a fine wood burner and all bits-and bobs you need - which included a nice bottle of wine on arrival! I felt totally relaxed within an hour!

There are plenty of footpaths, it's about 40 mins walk or 2 mins drive to Corfe. 10-12 mins to Swanage. You could take a hefty hike to the world famous Square and Compass pub in Worth Matravers. Would love to go back and try some more of the footpaths at some point!

I felt the living room was more spacious than the photos I'd seen had portrayed. Easily comfortable for 4 people! The whole cottage seemed to be quite recently decorated too.

However, a point I really wish to make is about the owners. They were simply so incredibly helpful, and there if needed. I don't think they could have made themselves more helpful to be fair, and dealt with all our queries etc in spite of the weather, the fact that it's Christmas time and everybody is incredibly busy and frantic over the Christmas holiday period. We were all very grateful for their help. All in all, just really good, honest people.

To this end, Roffy House and its owners were key in ensuring we all had a fine and relaxing Christmas. Thank you!

I would not hesitate in returning (which I hope to) and recommending to others!
