“Fantastic meal and lovely setting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2012

We stayed in Charmouth for a short break for my Wife's birthday and were looking for somewhere nice for her birthday meal. We saw this place and the sample menus looked great (liked the fact only a few choices as usually means good local products and all cooked to order). Had a fabulous meal and lovely service throughout. Both my terrine and my wife's duck egg and smoked eel starters were fantastic. We both had steak for main and it was an amazing piece of meat cooked exactly as ordered. Wife finished with a cheeseboard with some delicious local cheeses and I went for sticky toffee which was amazing. Really good value as coffee was included in the price of the 3 courses and the wine was also reasonably priced. Heartily recommended and can't wait to return!

We stayed for 2 nights over a weekend and had a really lovely stay. Everything was just as we had hoped. I had high expectations of the food after what I'd been told by friends who had stayed here and they were far exceeded by the evening meal we had - delicious and in my opinion very good value. The breakfasts were also of a very high standard. We didn't expect snow and such cold weather in late October but thankfully the room was really warm and so nice to come back to when cold after a day outdoors. Excellent shower also. My only complaint is that the cats that visited my room when I stayed last year were nowhere to be seen!

Glad to hear you enjoyed your return visit! The cats are not really allowed in the hotel (certainly not the bedrooms) but they do sneak in to the lounge occasionally when were not looking, especially when we have the fire going.
It did get a bit nippy that weekend and snowed a bit so I think that did it for our cats leaving the warmth of our cottage. We shall reintriduce you to them on your next visit

A really nice little hotel! Beautiful house, well kept and nicely decorated. Small but nice room and new bathroom. Great breakfast. Very nice and friendly staff. Parking at the back but take care with a big car as the entrance is very narrow.
Interesting coast for fossil hunting.

We had a delightful stay at The White House. It's a beautiful old building, set back from Charmouth's quiet main street (how a previous reviewer managed to complain about traffic noise is beyond me - must be a very light sleeper with the hearing of a bat!) and ideally located for exploring this part of Dorset. Ian and Liz, and their team, are the most affable and welcoming of hosts. And the breakfast, mostly locally produced or home-made, was a daily treat. The only thing stopping a full five star rating is that, at the price, our bedroom (#1) - while comfortable and immaculately kept - was small, bordering on cramped.

Room Tip: It's probably worth paying a bit extra and getting the much larger Superior Room, if it's av...

Thank you for your very nice comments and for your honest feedback. We are of course delighted that you enjoyed the White House and our little corner of Dorset.

As for the size of some of our rooms, we are increasingly aware that many people do tend to want larger rooms these days when going away.

In an old regency building such as ours we are very limited as to what we can do, especially as bathrooms have been added within the original room itself to provide en suite facilities which are of course 'de rigueur' these days.

You may be interested to know that in January we are embarking on a major refurbishment of the bedrooms. At the end of that month , all being well we will have in effect four rooms up to and we think exceeding the standard of our current Premier Room. We will also retain one smaller ground floor room for single or double occupancy.

Liz and I have been here at the White House for twelve years now and in this time we have always tried to keep abreast of the changing and evolving requirements of our customers and in this time they have changed considerably. We do listen to feedback , we are grateful for it and we always act on it where we can.

We are confident that the improvements we are currently planning will not only reflect the valuable feedback we get from our guests but will also allow us to continue to meet and hopefully exceed your expectations for many years to come. The work commences on January 3rd 2013 and we should be back open all being well by the first week of February. Have a look at our website in January/February when we should have everything up online and we hope to be able to welcome you backto the NEW IMPROVED WHITE HOUSE sometime next year.

Travelling through Dorset we came upon this wonderful little hotel in Charmouth. Owners Ian and Liz made us very welcome, served us tea and biscuits on arrival on the terrace at the front of the hotel and were more than helpful with tips of where to go and what to do in the area. We had the premier room to the rear for one night only as that was all that was available but we would have stayed longer if we could have. The room was very comfortable and beautifully decorated.
The food was superb both breakfast and dinner ,several gold Taste of the West awards have been won over the last few years and are well deserved, we could not find fault at all.
Very much recommended.

Room Tip: Choose the premier room, lovely big super king bed and a double bath!

Thank you and we are pleased we helped make your visit to West Dorset a memorable one.You do need more than a couple of days to really get the best out of the area but I am sure a couple of days will just whet the appetite for a longer stay. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.
