We rolled into the Lyme Regis Tourist Info Centre on the final sunny weekend of September, in search of a place to lay our heads for the night. Since the weather was so good (what a relief after a such a soggy summer), there were no B&B rooms left in Lyme Regis, so the TIC clerk suggested the Cliffend in Charmouth, a couple miles away. Since we wanted to search the Charmouth and Seatown beaches for fossils anyway, the idea of staying there was attractive to us.
I'm so glad we decided to stay at the Cliffend! It is located right on the Coastal Path, overlooking the sea. The view from our first floor room was stunning. There is also a lovely, well manicured garden where you can sit and admire the view. The Coastal Path walking toward Lyme Regis was closed at the time due to land slips, but when it's open, you can walk the two miles to Lyme Regis. It's only a 10 minute walk along the Path to Charmouth Beach.
Our room was terrific! It was recently refurbished in a contemporary style, with laminate floors. I am a stickler for cleanliness - this place was spotless. The shower had great water pressure too. The room had a selection of teas/coffee and a kettle, but the owner brought us up a cup of tea when we arrived - very welcoming. There is a small fridge on the landing where fresh milk is kept and it's also available for any refrigerated snacks you might want to stash away. The room we stayed in had two beds pushed next to each other - you could control the bed position - elevate your head or feet, for example, by using an electronic control.
Breakfast was great. It was a full English, with the added benefit of homemade/breadmaker bread used for the toast. I don't eat meat, but I just informed the owners the day before of that fact, and was presented with a bountiful breakfast plate without sausage or bacon.
Charmouth's village amenities (pubs, restaurant, shops) are only a 10 minute stroll up the road.
I think that the Cliffend has only two rooms and is open to visitors March - October. It is WELL worth a stay if you will be in the area at that time.
