“ok if you are a very small person and have packed earplugs”
Reviewed July 25, 2008

i had booked a petite double for 2 nights. it was so petite that even the electric kettle looked huge (nowhere to plug it in without furniture removal to reveal electric socket at head of bed). the room overlooked an inner courtyard which was used by people using the bar and restaurant. the noise was deafening and certainly not reduced at 10 p.m. as promised in information file. there was no hot water at all. i was moved to another room at the front of the building. this had hot water and was quieter due to double glazing. however it was very hot since if i raised the double glazing to open the windows i was disturbed by traffic in the main street outside.

i was then informed that the next day i would have to return to my original room as the one i had been moved to had been booked. when i returned to the petite double there was no cold water - warm water even came from the cold tap.

breakfast on my last morning left a lot to be desired. there was only one waitress who was doing her best. the breakfast table had not been replenished, there was no cutlery and no papers. most tables had not been cleared. i waited half an hour for one piece of toast with a poached egg. then suddenly at 10 a.m. everything kicked off with 3 people clacking back and forth clearing tables (why not use trays?).

all the above aside, i have no complaint about the food - the dinner we had on our first night was delicious - but everything else was a great disappointment..

I have been staying in The Bull Hotel for over a month. The service is totally professional and at the same time they manage to make you feel comfortable and at home. The staff are more than happy to assist you with any additional requests which you may have in order to enhance your stay.

Although my stay has been purely business, my stay has been luxury, relaxing and enjoyable.

The rooms are elagantly decorated, individual and extremly comfortbale, I would recomend this hotel to anyone who wishes to feel comfortable and at home whilst away from home.

I think that Richard has got a great team and I will be back to enjoy the comforts as soon as I can.

  • Liked — The service provided by every member of staff......and the food!!!!

We stayed in the red four-poster room for two nights mid-week and thoroughly enjoyed our stay, despite reading some negative reviews on this site. My girlfriend and I booked this as a romantic break after a busy year and left (grudgingly) feeling completely relaxed.

After a difficult drive from Sussex in unseasonal rain, we found the staff to be very accommodating, checking us in and showing us to our room very quickly. The room itself blew us away, completely fulfilling everything it promised on the website. Obviously the red four poster room is the poster room for the hotel; the pictures on the website do not do it justice, it is much bigger than it looks online. The bed itself was comfortable and spacious, the sheets were high quality and the pillows soft. Surprisingly the four-poster does not dominate the room, the other unique selling point of the room being the vintage roll-top bath on a wooden platform at the opposite end to the bed. The towels provided were fluffy and more were available when we asked for them. And we did get through a lot of towels as along with the bath in the bedroom, in the bathroom there is a 2 person shower. The lighting is adjustable and of good quality which makes setting the mood very easy.

We dined in the hotel restaurant on our second night. I can honestly say that the food I had was the best I’d ever tasted. The service in the restaurant was unobtrusive and we weren’t left waiting for long between courses. Breakfast was plentiful (my girlfriend being an authority on these matters) and cooked very well. It was good that the hotel laid out a small breakfast buffet so we could help ourselves while waiting for our full English. We certainly got our money’s worth here.

There were a few minor complaints, however none that particularly disappointed us or distracted from our stay. The door to our room often looked shut when it hadn’t and we had to be weary of this. We also found noise from the corridor travels quite easily through the door, however this is largely infrequent at times when you want to sleep because everyone else is doing the same. We were disappointed that dressing gowns were not provided, mainly because they were shown in the photos on the website. Our biggest problem was the inconsistent running of hot and cold water (our shower seemed to alternate and we were unable to get any hot water for a bath one afternoon), however when we addressed this with reception they apologised and immediately offered to adjust the bill accordingly without prompting. The car park could be mentioned on the website so guests know there is one as we only knew because of reading other reviews, however it being at the back of the hotel is not a problem in itself.

We did not experience any of the negative feedback some on this site have posted. The attention to detail was excellent. We found the staff polite and helpful, largely not disturbing us (which is what you want on a romantic holiday) yet were approachable and accommodated our needs as and when required (extra towels, water, ice bucket etc). Although there is some background noise from the street in the front rooms, the convenient location of the hotel (close to local amenities) justified and outweighed this.

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and believe we got what we paid for with no false promises from the website. We would definitely consider staying there again.

Along with other reviewers, our stay was a little disappointing. Overall we felt the hotel looked shabby particularly the entrance through the car park (which was difficult to find) and all the stairways and public rooms. Our room (Fuschia Flock) had some good points but also some bad. The bed was very comfortable and we loved the Frette sheets and the pillows but the bed squeaked every time either of us moved and that, coupled with the fact that seagulls were sitting on the roof squawking all night meant that we had two nights disturbed sleep. The bedroom was small with nowhere to sit other than the bed. There was a small sofa in the bathroom but we didn't want to sit in the bathroom. The rolltop bath was big but situated as it was in the middle of the floor meant that once one was in the bath, one was stranded and there was nowhere to put anything and it was too high to reach the floor. A lot of thought had gone into the furnishing of the room but it was not very practical. The wardrobe didn't hold very much neither did all the drawers. Liked the basin in the bathroom and the toiletries but liquid soap, bath foam and shampoo is a bit of a limited choice - where was the body lotion and conditioner. We ate in the hotel restaurant the first night. Again this had good points and bad. Why was the chef obssessed with put two of the dishes we had out of four on a bed of mixed salad including carrots and peppers as though one was in some run of the mill place in Spain. The scallops were very good but the dover sole (suspiciously cheap at £29 for two) wasn't very good and didn't taste very fresh. We thought the cooked breakfast was excellent. We found the staff helpful and friendly but some of the service in the dining room was amateurish in the extreme. After all the prices at The Bull are not cheap. We paid £160 for the Thursday night and £180 for the Friday night. We would not return.

  • Liked — Mattress, pillows and sheets
  • Disliked — The sqeaking of the bed and the seagulls

In a quandry here. Wasn't sure to head this review as I did or alternatively "A load of old bull".
When you look at previous reviews you could be forgiven thinking they are 2 Bull Hotels in Bridport. Sadly there is only one. Some reviewers think it was great, others were very disappointed. I am firmly in the disappointed camp. Don't be misled by the website and the marketing blurb in the rooms. This is a poorly run hotel hiding behind the statement of "shabby chic". For aficionados of shabby chic you will love the Flowers suite where we stayed. You will enjoy a "luxury" bathroom with linoleum covered floor. Cheap white wall tils...chipped bath...very poor shower that alternated between warm and cold....appalling lighting...toiletries in sticky bottles topped up daily. No shower cap...tissues...cotton wool. No daily change of towels...very poor levels of housekeeping.
The room with attached sitting room was fine. The bed very comfortable but the bed linen like the towels were not changed for the second day yet the room rate was exactly the same as the first night!. No fresh milk on the tea tray just UHT milk in nasty little containers you get in motorway service stations. The wardrobe was meant to be a Chinese antique! the door didn't close properly so consequently it kept opening on it's own. A glass faced chest was badly cracked. For this we paid £160 per night.
Downstairs was not a lot better. In the breakfast room/ restaurant, heavy wooden chairs screeched over the bare boarded floor when moved. The table tops were hand painted and felt greasy. The breakfast buffet was pretty basic. The english breakfast ordinary served on a chipped plate with bacon as hard as the chairs we were sitting on.
There was a ray of light. The dinner we had on the first night was excellent. They do have a competent chef in the kitchen but he is poorly let down by the erratic service. One dish failed to arrive and the second bottle of wine arrived unchilled. The staff were very pleasant to talk to, they were just untrained and we didn't see any sign of management directing the traffic. Nobody asked us if we had enjoyed our stay. All in all a very disappointing hotel grossly overpriced.I wholeheartdly agree with the review written by Charlie062 and levelhead 01 posted in Apri & May. Don't waste your money!

My partner and I recently had our wedding at The Bull and had a wonderful weekend. We chose the Bull as the venue for our wedding because we wanted to get married somewhere that was a little different to the usual corporate, swirly carpeted, unstylish venues that normally offer wedding packages. The Bull really did give the wow-factor. A stunning ballroom, the uber cool Venner bar and pretty flowery courtyard with vintage style bunting and fairy lights had me hooked as soon as we saw it on our initial visit and the food is fantastic – all our guests commented on how good it was. Plus on the actual wedding day the staff worked so hard to make our special day perfect and we really couldn’t fault the service.

I stay in a lot of hotels for work and The Bull is quite unlike any other place that I’ve visited and that’s why I liked it. Quirky, rustic and most definitely laid back, it really is a very unique place. If you want a swanky, luxe, modern hotel then the Bull may not be for you - part of its charm is that it is an old building and the ‘shabby chic’ décor really reflects this perfectly. The service isn’t slick like you’d get from a hotel in London, or another big city, but it’s friendly and efficient – you’re in Dorset after all, not the metropolis!

I notice that some people have made unfavourable comments about the car park. We didn’t find it a problem. Yes it’s situated behind the hotel and does mean that you enter the Bull from the back entrance, but so what! We stayed at more expensive hotels than the Bull on our honeymoon and they didn’t even have car parks, we had to spend a fortune in municipal car parks. So at least the Bull offers a free, safe and convenient place to leave your car.

As all our friends and family stayed at the hotel during the wedding weekend, I was able to have a peek at all the bedrooms. All are beautifully decorated with real creative flair - quirky wallpaper, antiques, good quality bedding, flat screen TVs etc etc. Some rooms are very small and some are huge, but I think the prices reflect this. Just don’t be disappointed if you choose to pay less and get a small room. Some of the rooms do face onto the main street in Bridport and you do get a bit of residual noise from the road plus the market does set up right outside the hotel on Saturday mornings, but you’re right in the centre of a bustling market town so it’s no more than you’d expect! But if you’re wanting a room with total silence then ask for one overlooking the courtyard.

There are a few tweaks that I think could be made to some rooms, but don’t let these put you off staying, they won’t ruin your weekend break by any means. While the bedrooms are perfect, some of the bathrooms could do with a little more work. A few of the antique roll top baths require re-enamelling and the vinyl flooring that’s in some of bathrooms should be upgraded – scrubbed wooden floors or ceramic tiles would give a better impression. And rooms that are on the first floor facing out onto the main road could do with slatted blinds instead of black out blinds to give a degree of privacy without having to block out the light. I’m also not convinced by the Neal’s Yard toiletries in the bathrooms – I’d prefer mini-sized bottles that I know only I have used. However, these aside, if you want a relaxing weekend break by the seaside with great food and a comfy bed, plus a unique, quirky location then do give The Bull a try. We’ll definitely go back.

  • Liked — The decor in all the bedrooms
  • Disliked — Not enough privacy in front facing rooms without pulling the blinds down
