“Beautiful house in a fabulous location”

Despite having live in Dorset for a long time I had never been to Symondsbury and had no idea what a lovely village it is. The Old Rectory must be the jewel in the crown there and we were delighted to stay in such a beautiful house.

The bedrooms all had their individual charm and were spacious, clean and well appointed. The wallpaper in the Ivy room is to be seen to be believed and the contrast with the fantastic ensuite bathroom is great. We stayed in the Indian themed room which, given that we got engaged at the Taj Mahal, was perfect. Everyone commented on the good nights sleep they had - nothing to do with the wine!

The communal areas were lovely and the games room was popular. The kitchen is small. There is no getting round the fact that it would have been easier to have a bigger space but we did meals for over 20 with good teamwork and it was fine. The grounds were great. I'm not sure that H&S would approve of the children's favourite game of jumping off the ha-ha over the electric fence - but none of them were injured!

Although pets aren't allowed the owners kindly agreed to our well behaved, clean whippet coming. She had some lovely walks - it was very good of them to do so and she fitted the elegance of the house perfectly!

We had deliveries from Majestic in Dorchester and Tesco and they arrived on time.

The village has some great little shops and a cycle trail which is interestingly signposted - the cycle shop in the village was really helpful with directions though. There are great walks around and the one from Golden cap back to the house was a delight - including 'Hell's Lane' in the mud.

For exploring 'proper' dorset (rather than the conurbation of Bournemouth/Poole) it was ideally located. There was a helpful map but, of course, the internet makes exploring easy and there was a wifi which didn't need signing in to (although, because of the size of the house it is not accessible upstairs - but if you want 4G and uninterrupted wifi, Dorset is not the place for you!)

We only live about 25 miles from the Old Rectory, but we were in a different world for the weekend and it was lovely.

This was our 2nd visit to the old rectory this time with a group of 30 adults and children.
The space available is superb, and the gardens a great place to relax and enjoy the countryside. The bedrooms are large and airy with period furniture. Kids love playing in the safe garden, with various hideaways from the adults.

We enjoyed a wonderful weekend at The Old Rectory, set in the lovely village of Symondsbury. We were a group of past visitors and new, family and friends aged 2-70. The house is spacious, beautifully furnished and elegant but very comfortable and homely. All of the rooms have very comfortable beds with good quality quilts. The bathrooms have excellent powerful showers or free standing baths. The house is very well equipped to cater for a large group, we all sat round to dinner and an evening buffet in the dinning room and enjoyed breakfast on the veranda. We all look forward to a return visit to this beautiful house.

“Absolutely fabulous”
Reviewed April 20, 2014 for a stay in April 2014

We booked The Old Rectory for 23 family members to celebrate 2 milestone birthdays. We ranged in age from 7 to 80 and everyone loved the property and location. We all had our pick of the bedrooms and the boys loved the attic room whilst the girls were quite at home in their princess bedroom. The dining room seated all 23 of us each evening and the lounge was perfect from chilling out in. We had the most perfect weather to enjoy the garden to the fullest with tennis, football, frisbee, croquet (well our own version of!) and a birthday picnic on the lawn. Agree with other reviewers that the kitchen is a tad small for the the size of the property but this just meant that the two on cooking duty each evening were not disturbed by any one else and the appliances are more than adequate to cater for a large number.
There are great walks around the village and Bridport is a must for anyone who loves a rummage for an antique or two. West Bay and Burton Bradstock beaches are definitely worth a visit.

“Absolutely perfect”
Reviewed March 25, 2014 for a stay in March 2014

I rented the house for my birthday along with 25 other guests and I couldn't have wished for a more perfect stay. The owner Phil who I dealt with in the lead up to the trip was great, very accommodating and understanding. The house itself is incredible, I am from the local town of Bridport originally but I felt like a world away being in the house - it felt like a real treat. I am 100% going to recommend this to my friends and would love to make a trip there with my friends an annual thing as they all enjoyed themselves so much.

“A really great experience to stay here!”
Reviewed April 12, 2013 for a stay in April 2013

A big group of us stayed here for 2 nights. There is a huge dining room and we did a couple of lovely parties where you feel like you are a member of the cast in a real life Agatha Christie film. We got 30 round the table for a sit down dinner - they provide enough plates and glasses etc for all those people.
Everywhere you look are beautiful things, vases and furniture, odd ornaments and books. All very tasteful and in keeping with the style and age of the house.

The bedrooms are something else! The bathrooms all had excellent showers and the kitchen was well equipped.

I found Phil and Ann very kind and accommodating - couldn't do enough for us.

“Amazing place”

I booked the Old Rectory in Symondsbury for a family Christmas. Leading up to our stay, Phil the owner was incredibly helpful with all my enquiries, and when we arrived I was absolutely gobsmacked at how beautiful and massive the house was. It is even better than it looks on the internet, and much, much bigger than I had imagined. The house was completely PERFECT in every way. The bedrooms and bathrooms were stunning, and the many other rooms were outstanding in a shabby chic kind of way. My family and guests were utterly knocked out by the house, and are still talking about it months later. Phil is just next door to deal with any problems should they arise. We were there during Christmas so it was cold and rainy outside, but despite the size of the house it was well-heated and we never felt cold. I would imagine in the summer this would be an ideal place to stay as the garden is very large, and the house is a short drive away from the coast. I would definitely stay there again. Actually, I would like to live there...
