Came here for a family event and had a really great evening. Food was excellent all round, between us we must have had 10 different courses and thumbs up for all of them - no exceptions. Our concern at family events is service as Grandad doesn't like to be kept waiting ( and, believe me, you don't want to get on the wrong side of Grandad! ) but it was just right for us. Beer was wonderful as well. So, well done to the Marquis, we'll be back again as soon as we get chance.

Thank Andrew S

The Marquis of Lorne always feels like it's in the middle of nowhere but, although it is off the beaten track, it is well worth the journey. Lovely setting, great atmosphere and high quality food. We had the duck salad and scollops with black pudding to start and fillet steak and lamb shoulder for mains. All top quality

We always visit this pub at least once when we are staying in the area, the food is just wonderful, my favourite pint of Palmers best is like nectar, and the service is attentive and friendly.
If you can find it give it a go, it really is worth the drive.

This charming old inn has been under the current management for a relatively short time but already it has built up a local reputation for good food and a warm welcome. We went there for my birthday on our recent weekend in West Dorset. The warmth of the patronne's welcome when I booked and when we arrived on a busy Saturday evening was genuine and the menu was very appetising. Even the wine list contained a pleasant surprise at finding so many readable priced bottles to choose. The menu is well-stocked with fish and seafood options and had a good selection for my vegetarian wife to choose from. Our starters were excellent and the chef was happy to adjust some ingredients to our taste. My main course of fish stew was superb and beautifully cooked, which made it all the more disappointing that my wife's roasted vegetable risotto was a complete disaster. It was a gloopy mush with no discernible grains of rice remaining and the peppers and onions were undercooked and showed no signs of ever being roasted. When this was brought to the hostess's attention she was sympathetic and offered to bring a replacement dish but seemed unconcerned that my wife (a good risotto cook) had told her that was not the right way to make a risotto.
Desserts redeemed the kitchen considerably so all was not lost. However, we also found the waitress that night to be brusque and functional in her approach rather than engaging and helpful.
All in all it was a pretty good evening and good value despite the risotto disaster. This is a place that does many things well and has its heart in the right place, but it needs to keep trying to improve or it will lose its good reputation. We will probably visit it again to see how it's developing.
