We stayed in the coach house rooms with some friends and our dogs, the coach house rooms are 'dog friendly' as are the staff! Although the coach house rooms are small, they are adequate, clean, and perfect for getting the dogs in and out to the secure garden. The staff and service were excellent and very friendly, the food was superb and the surroundings perfect for some good country walks.

We stayed with two friends who had previously dined here for a long weekend. The hotel is in a quiet location with ample parking and we were at once made most welcome. The highlight of the stay is without doubt the restaurant and, with the exception of a steak that did not match the eulogies and description of the maître d'hôtel - it was not melting in the mouth - it was tough, this was an imaginative and welcome departure from the usual "bistro" offerings Breakfasts, which were excellent, were served in the conservatory This establishment is to say the least not inexpensive but exceeded our expectations in all areas and would recommend without hesitation We stayed in the coach house - extremely quiet and very comfortable bed if slightly dated décor and lighting

Stayed overnight as part of a walking group finishing off the Wessex Ridgeway. Generally a pleasant and quiet stay. Three of us had to share a family room which wasn't ideal but was all that was available. That said, the main room was large and comfortable. The food quality was excellent, with a varied menu, and the chef is clearly very good. Menu prices are not cheap, but the quality is certainly there.

My wife and I stayed for 3 nights in September. The average score reflects that some things were very good and others were poor.
We booked a 4 poster room using Booking.com as the hotel website does not have a secure page for credit card details (no padlock sign). Only one room was available, the most expensive, but was described as follows: " Arguably the best room in the house this room features a blend of Georgian high ceilings, cornices and shuttered windows with mahogany furniture and antiques. It also boasts a high-tech Philip Starck walk-in shower and a large Georgian window overlooking the beautiful walled garden". We also booked other properties for our week in Dorset, so when we arrived a month later I had forgotten some of these details. We had a 4 poster bed in dark room with a window overlooking the busy road, and a tiny bathroom with a shower fed from a mixer tap over the bath. It was at the top of a short staircase directly above the front door / reception desk with attendant noise from other guests and staff. The furniture (not bed) and carpet were certainly old and worn, and stained in the case of the carpet. When I checked the confirmation email before leaving (to check on the price) I realised that we had not been given the correct room and a member of staff in the dining room confirmed this. However the receptionist was adamant that we had been staying in the correct room and said that the details on the Booking.com website were "mixed up".
Most of the staff were friendly and efficient but some were unfriendly (the female receptionist and one of the female dining/bar staff, who made a comment about something I said to my wife which she misheard (nothing to do with her or the hotel). On the Sunday evening the service in the restaurant was slow, mostly because the only waitress was (as she explained) actually a sous-chef who didn't normally wait at table. The food was generally good although not exceptional and fish I had one night was burnt (not seared and crisp) but the flesh was OK when the soggy burnt skin was scraped off. Breakfasts were very good.
So I would advise guests to make sure that you actually get the room that you book, because it may have been given to someone else and you get an inferior one.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for your comments. We're sorry you did not enjoy some elements of your stay and that you found the booking process unsatisfactory. The security of our on-line booking system has never been called in to question before and so it has been necessary to take professional advice. Of course, our payments system is secure. However, I am told: 'There is no method to show the padlock & SSL information with the payments system embedded within an iframe. However, we could add some text above the iframe to explain payments are on an SSL.' I have asked that this to be done.
I appreciate that your expectation of your room was different to the one described on booking.com and apologise for the confusion. I can assure you there's no conspiracy theory here. Our receptionist tells me you told her about the problem and I accept she should have made a more profuse apology. When dealing with dozens of third party websites, errors occasionally do occur and we will put this right too. Of course, we would rather you had had full confidence to use our own on-line booking system as we pay considerable commission to booking.com
You are right in saying that our Sous Chef did wait tables one night. Gerry had simply expressed an interest in experiencing service from a different perspective. It will make her a better chef to know and understand the pressures front of house. If you had asked her about the food, I think you would have been amazed by her detailed reply.
Food is always subjective and there's nothing constructive to be achieved here as we and the vast majority of our guests think our food is exceptional. The fish should have been returned if you were unhappy.
Once again, thank you for drawing our attention to some new areas of our performance. We're genuinely sorry they spoiled your stay and we'll endeavour to correct them as soon as possible.

The restaurant is superb having an interesting very well cooked / balanced menu. seved in atmospheric room with beams Staff are all very helpful and pleasant - drinks served in nice old 14thcentury reception rooms .Price is high at £100 plus for two but justified by quality
The rooms are less exciting - we stayed in one in main house which while well furnished / comfortable had an outlook one way over car park to a small industrial site and the other way over a large flat asphalt roof towards a garden . Also it was some what noisy as the kitchen below started operations early in the morning . So ok perhaps for a night after a good dinner but very expensive at £170

I attended a Wedding here recently.
Wow, what a stunning place to have a Wedding and reception.
The couple were Married in the conservatory which is small and intimate.
After they were pronounced Husband and Wife we had Pimms in the garden, beautifully kept lawn and tables and chairs set out with linen table cloths.
The Wedding Breakfast was served in the dining room.
The lamb we had was perfectly cooked and a good sized portion.
Dessert was a trio of puds.
I'm not normally a lover of chocolate brownie but thought I would try it. Delicious, melt in your mouth, warm, choclatey loveliness!!!
The staff were attentive, friendly and efficient.
Fantastic, Many Thanks to all involed :-)

My husband and I stayed at this hotel while down in Dorset for the bank holiday weekend. The hotel was an absolute delight, the hotel itself is lovely but the visit was made extra special by the food but mostly by the staff who were excellent and could not do enough for us. We will be moving to the area very soon and will be spending lots of time in this restaurant and recommending this hotel to all our friends. If you pay a visit to the hotel you must try the snails there were a "taste sensation!".

Room Tip: We booked last minute so got the smallest double room in the hotel, it was fine but not worth the p...
