I stayed here for the long weekend at the end of March with my girlfriend so this review is well overdue. From the moment we stepped in we were impressed by the friendly atmosphere and cosy nature of The Abbey House. Jonathan and Maureen were charming hosts and only too willing to help in any way possible.

The breakfasts were tasty and the house and garden beuatifully presented. I would heartily recommend it to anyone.

England countryside at its most authentic and beautiful. The Abbey House is elegant but yet great value for money. We paid 75GBP for bed and breakfast and it was the best ever. home made muesli and croissants and a full choice of cooked breakfasts. Wonderful afternoon teas on the lawn. Our room had a separate bathroom, private, not shared, but this did not concern us at all.

Just a few days here left us feeling refreshed and rested. Run by people who genuinely enjoy welcoming guests and go the extra mile to make your stay a treat. Breakfast is a delight and, weather permitting can be taken outside. Specialities are fresh crab sandwiches and dorset apple cake with clotted cream. This was our third stay and we will be back!

Both of us stayed here at the start of March for 3 nights as we had been enchanted by the place when we found it the previous year. As soon as I walked into the reception area it felt very warm and supportive and we were not disappointed having booked. The atmosphere is key to the B&B. The building was initially the place where the Monks ate their meals and it contained a 'hospital ' for the monks who were sick. This caring, peaceful and protective atmosphere has been made tangible again and maintained due to the nature of the hosts and their daughters, one of whom has now become a part of the family business. They have been there for 19 years.
Both Jonathan and Maureen proved to be excellent hosts, were keen to do their best at all times and we were treated as individuals throughout. I only had to ask once for fresh hot water for the tea and it came without asking on both subsequent days at just the right time. Butter is individually cut from the block, preserves are laid out in little dishes. the tea itself was strong and clearly not the cheapest tea out! Breakfast was at a fixed time but perfectly adequate for us.
During the winter season, the breakfast room overlooks the garden but around Springtime, it is used for lunches and afternoon teas, although the atmosphere on the lawn and grounds outside, mean that most people will eat there due to the views form the beautifully kept gardens. Breakfast is then eaten in the back room, atmospheric too but in a different way.

We did not eat lunch as we found the breakfasts more than sufficient - the porridge was particularly filling and tasty. However, the food seemed to have rave reviews wherever we looked! In the Autumn, Jon and Maureen tie up with the Tropical Gardens and there is an evening guided walk, much enjoyed by all the locals, and then, you can come back and eat at the Abbey House - a very popular venture as this is planned to be repeated this year too and hopefully we will be there!

Evening meals out of season are not great, although the Ilchester Arms provides adequate sustenance at a reasonable price. For 2 of the evening s we went to Portesham, on the advice of our hosts, to the Kings Arms where we had 2 lovely meals - and an interesting although somewhat over effusive head waiter! It is only 3 miles from Abbotsbury and worth the trip - unless you are exhausted from walking in the other direction and cannot face another step!

This B&B has unique atmosphere, Yes it may be described by some as old fashioned, but it depends what you want. In Abbotsbury itself there are many things to do and see in the village, some interesting craft shops/ studios, no street lamps and a wonderful smell of wood burning as you walk through the village of a winter's evening! Using a mobile phone can be a challenge- but hey, the world will not disappear whilst you find yourself again!

I would thoroughly recommend this to all who seek solace but want an interesting time with beautiful scenery, plenty of walks, excellent food and 'good company.'

We had room 2 which was offered to us as a free upgrade and very much appreciated as it meant the sitting area and TV was in a separate room from the bedroom. The bed was very firm which took a little getting used to but the benefits of two room sand a lovely large bathroom certainly outweighed any the firm bed. We had a lovely view from the window

Room Tip: Ask Jonathan or Maureen about the types of beds and space within each room - and read it up beforeha...

We often stay in hotels and B&Bs all over the country, however none have been quite as lovely as this guest house in the quaint little village of Abbotsbury. When we arrived we were greeted and shown to our room by a very friendly, welcoming man. Upon asking what time breakfast was he said "what time would you like" which we thought was sweet.

The whole building is beautiful and has been decorated extremely well in suit with the quaint style. The room was adorable and right at the top of the hotel which was even more cosy. The room had everything you'd need and the bed was one that you just dont want to leave.

The breakfast was all cooked by Maureen using fresh local produce and Maureen went out of her way to cook us what we wanted even though it wasn't on her menu. The homemade musli is a must try, as it was great. The breakfast room is also a lovely place to eat with a huge fireplace on the back wall.

My partner nipped out during our stay and so I thought I'd have a little sit down in the living room while waiting. The room again was lovely and very cosy and Maureen came in to offer me tea/coffee and asked if I wanted the fire on.

Maureen and John looked after us so well throughout our stay and were happy to help with anything. The couple are perfect hosts and clearly enjoy what they do. And subsequently we were made to feel so comfortable it was like home away from home :)
