We walked to the Ilchester Arms from Osmington Bay (about 14 miles) and were mighty pleased to this lovely village when we (4 adults and dog) crested the ridge above Abbotsbury. The hotel is in keeping with the village, it's charming and idiosyncratic in a beautiful location and as far away from a corporate experience as you can imagine, given that, I think it's reasonable to fit into the pace of the village and be prepared to wait for quality when things get busy - and that's what we got. On arrival the hotel manager was friendly and flexible, as were his bar and restaurant staff. We were staying in the hotel so had dinner, they were busy and a few things took a little longer towards the very end of the evening than ideal, but the menu and the quality of the cooking and it's presentation were superb, the wine list was reasonably priced. The bar which is used by the village is near to the restaurant and the atmosphere in the restaurant was unstuffy and relaxed. The rooms are spotless although a little dated - they know this and plan to upgrade them - when they get this sorted I would consider adding another star.
There was a great choice at breakfast (we were on a B&B deal) and it was good, the waitress said 'fill your boots' which was very reassuring ! They were happy with us checking out late and at some stage our dog was rewarded with a bag of bonios, so I guess he'd be consistent with my rating.
