“Nice break but room for improvement”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 26, 2013

We stayed in a silver caravan so wasn't expecting perfection, the bathroom was clean and good shower for a caravan. The fridge was barely cold and no ice box. Also there is a massive ant problem, even when no food was left out they were everywhere. The double bed was very uncomfortable felt every spring so had to sleep on spare quilt! The token system for the pool wasn't great if the outside pool was full people were saying they would use other pools to get tokens and then entering 'full' pool. It was a pain to have to get more tokens if you went for food or drink. The onsite food was disappointing, the children were given out of date fruit bags, which I queried and the man said it wasn't his job to check and they didn't have any more. The bar prices were expensive over £4 for a bottle of beer is ridiculous!!
I don't however want to make out it was a terrible holiday as the kids enjoyed it, the bowling staff were particularly helpful and nice. The surfing lesson my husband and son booked was great. The outdoor beach bar was great and a nice change from the onsite entertainment. The sports bar was also ok.
Woolacombe itself was lovely and the beaches were fab, we were lucky with the weather and made the most of the beaches.

I am pleased to read you found your accommodation clean on arrival, and also enjoyed the shower in the caravan. I am sorry to read that you experienced a maintenance and housekeeping issue, and I do hope you reported this at the time as we would have greatly appreciated the opportunity to rectify these for you.

We do implement a token system for our swimming pools as a health and safety process, and also to ensure it is only our residents that are using the facilities provided. We do ask before giving out tokens which pool our guests intend to use, and the lifeguard will prevent people from entering, even with tokens, if they are at maximum capacity.

Our bar prices are reflective of the area we are located, however I am sorry you found these expensive. It is great to read that, overall, you had an enjoyable family holiday and were very pleased with aspects of your stay.

We hope to welcome you back,

4 adults stayed on camping pitch in trailer tent. - £215 for the week I thought was very reasonable. this included bus pass and for what was on offer I don't think anyone should complain!

the positives -

Entertainment - brilliant and the best I have seen out of the parks I have been to. the park stars work extremely hard and the kids were kept entertained all evening.

Drink - people moaning about prices must not go out drinking very often. £3.35 for a pint of Carlsberg is very good - especially compared to what we paid when we went to Wolloacombe £3.95! singles were £2.95 so compared to most pubs / clubs there wasn't much difference

Food - takeaway very reasonable £4.70 for cheese burger & chips and included a free drink. The old Mill Pub did very good food at again with most meals being £8.50 - £10.00 this is what most pub meals cost in and around local area if not slightly cheaper.

Staff - always willing to help and seemed friendly no matter what time of the day it was or what activities were taking place.

Swimming Pool - this is a positive as the outdoor pool was very accommodating and with the nice weather was a great place to be around. the indoor pool was equally as good and a good way to cool down in the heat.

Things to Improve -

Showers - Due to the really nice weather the showers were not temperature controlled. this became a nuisance as after a long day in the heat would have been nice to have a cool shower rather than boiling hot!

Swimming Pool - would like to see a lifeguard on duty or a member of staff monitor cctv closer as children 'bombing' in and around people wishing to swim or children playing in the pool became very annoying and frustrating.

Camping Pitches - Not really a negative about the site, however due to the fact there was no rain for 6/7weeks the all weather pitches were very hard and impossible to peg down without rock pegs. these were sold in shop but seemed to be over priced. More grass pitches with electric would be more appealing to return to this site!

all in all one of the best campsites I have stayed at. with all the ex34 activities on offer I doubt another site would be able to compete if a few areas were refurbished to be more modern!

well done woolacombe bay. will try twitchen parc next time round as sadly didn't get chance to look at other sites!

Room Tip: take rock pegs!

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. It is our intention that our guests receive value for money, and it is excellent to read that you found your holiday very reasonable. I am pleased to read your positive comments; it is always nice for our staff to read encouraging words. It’s also great to read that you enjoyed the variety of indoor and outdoor swimming pools we offer on site.

We do advise our guests that when booking a pitch on an All Weather Base, galvanised rock pegs are required, although it is possible that the dry weather made the ground harder and I apologise if you experienced some difficulties with your pegs. I have noted all your comments, and thank you again for your feedback, it is very much appreciated.

We hope you have a great stay at Twitchen House on your next visit!

We booked at Golden Coast because the website stated it was a family friendly park, within something for everyone, but I have to admit to being a bit disappointing.

My partner and I took our 3 year old son, and went with the Grandparents (mid 60s). I'm sure this review will make it look like we had an awful time, we didn't, we had a great time, but I also wouldn't go again.

There was very little for adults to do, unless you wanted to sit by the pool all day, and the Grandparents ended up getting the local bus (not the shuttle) to Woolacombe beach everyday. However, our three year old loved it, and that's really all that mattered.

First the positives:
Accommodation - We booked an executive lodge, and I can not complain one bit, the accommodation was lovely, very spacious and comfortable, and within a short walk of all the amenities.

Old Mill Pub - The food here was absolutely delicious, I'd never complain about having a few more Vegetarian dishes, but still, we never had a bad meal hear, and I thought the food prices were reasonable. (it was cheaper than the Cook Island pub 5 minutes down the road)

Indoor Play Center-
Was huge!!! Our son absolutely loved it, it seemed to be 3 or 4 stories high, and was really clean with plenty for him to do.

The Shop-
Had plenty, and wasn't too expensive, also did a lot of gifts and toys etc.

Oakwood Outdoor pool-
I've covered this in the negative as well, but of all the pools it was the best, never too busy, always able to get a sun lounger and in a lovely setting.

The Beach-
Ok, not a positive of this park, but the beach at Woolacombe was amazing. Best beach we have ever been to, truly wonderful. Great for rock pooling or sun bathing, absolutely huge, and lots of lovely coves to explore.

And now the Negatives:

SAFETY!

Not enough paths by far. Although there was paths to all the accommodations from the road, to get to anything like the shop, the Old Mill, Cleavewood House, The Entertainment complex etc, you had to walk on the road quite a lot, not what I'd expect from somewhere that's meant to be family friendly. Cars were meant to drive at 10mph max, but we saw quite a few cars going faster, especially near the Old Mill. You couldn't even get to the Trim Trail, or Tarkka Trail or whatever it was called without going on the road.

The Lakeside, while nice, didn't have fences around, and if we'd have been staying in a silver lodge, I'd have been terrified of having my toddler running around out there!

Play parks, of the 5 we found on this site, only the two smallest were toddler friendly, and by smallest I mean 1 slide and 1 or 2 swings. Both of these were really old and dated, and the one swing at the Clevewood House 'park' was broken.

All the rest were made for older children, especially the large park by the Old Mill. I saw quite a few little children take a fall through or get tangled in the netting there. And there were a lot of little children in tears as they were too small to play there, but as this was the main place to eat, there really wasn't anywhere else for them to play. There also wasn't any sitting areas or shaded areas at the parks, which meant that parents literally had to hover over their children to watch them, hardly restful for us, or fun for them!

Swimming Pools-

Firstly, the tokens for the indoor pools and the main outdoor pool are just A PAIN! There was nothing to tell us you needed them, or where to get them from, and we ended up stock piling a few just so we didn't have to go via and queue at reception to use the pools.

We never used the main outdoor pool, the one day we tried, it was already at capacity by half 10 (having opened at 10) while it looked OK, the giant metal fencing round it looked ugly and made it feel like it was in a prison!

The Outdoor pool by Clevewood house was also constantly packed, so again never used that.

The outdoor pool by the Oakwood (Oakdale?) lodges was lovely, and we used this every day, but it wasn't shallow, and there was no toddler pool, so children had to have arm bands etc on. And, as with all of the pools there was absolutely no shaded areas (not even umbrellas to find shade under). There was no toilets by the Oakwood pool, so every time one of us needed the bathroom we had to trudge back to our accommodation (and walk through a carpark to boot - no direct paths!)

Main Indoor pool- Was nice, a good size, but very plain. We used it a few times, it was never too busy, and I'm sure it was the high of fashion in the 80s!

Clevewood Indoor pool- Much more modern, but quite small, and again very plain, there's a dry sauna here as well.

Amenities/ facilities
:
The Shuttle bus-
Such a good idea, but the first bus isn't' till half 10, and the last one is at half 5, and they're once an hour, with a break for 2 hours at lunch time. This really isn't conducive to travel between the parks. We wanted to go to one of the other parks for a day to use the outdoor splash zone there, or perhaps go to their restaurant for a change. But the timings just weren't conducive. Nor was the fact that the bus went in a loop, so if we wanted to go to Woolacombe Bay park we'd have been on the bus for 45 mins for a park 5 mins drive away. It also meant that going down to the beech the bus was already busy by the time it got to the Golden Coast, as it had been to all the other parks first. In the end we just drove everywhere and the £10 we spent on the bus pass was a waste.

Other food -
Although the Old Mill was great, we didn't want to eat there every night, and a sports bar just is not what Id expect at a family friend park as an alternative food location. You could also get takeout from the Club House, which was OK, but quite pricey, and not the best.

The Entrainment complex/ Club House-
Really really dated. And much smaller than expected.

Room Tip: Executive Lodges or Gold Lodges seem best (with the Gold Lodges being based around the small outdoor...

I am very sorry to read that you left somewhat dissatisfied with your stay at Golden Coast, although it is good to read that you enjoyed some of our additional facilities such as the soft play area, and couldn’t fault your accommodation. I am very sorry you felt the Park was not suited to your toddlers; the safety of our guests is very important to us and we do enforce the 10mph speed limit around the Park and take reports of any vehicles speeding very seriously.

We advise our guests in the Welcome Guide issued on check in that tokens are required from Reception to access the swimming pools. We use a token system for a variety to reasons. These include preventing young children from accessing the pools without an adult and risking injury, ensuring that only our own guests can utilise the facilities, and also to maintain the numbers in the swimming pools for health and safety purposes.

I apologise that our shuttle bus was not suited to your individual family’s needs. The bus only stops for one hour during the day, although I am sorry if our timetable was confusing. We run our buses in a loop to allow our guests to hop on and hop off at each Park and also the beach, as each families destination may be different and we do try to cater for everyone’s needs, and run 2 - 3 buses for each pick-up in our busy periods. I am very sorry you did not enjoy this additional facility.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review, your feedback is greatly appreciated.

We had a excellent week down here in May Half Term, we had an Exclusive Van and it was clean and to a high standard. The park was clean and tidy and the staff throughout the site including the maintenance guys were both professional and friendly, the only thing that could be improved was the Club House needs some TLC but apart from that we will be back next year for our 3rd visit !

Room Tip: If your used to Haven Sites stick with Gold vans and above here :)

Firstly we had a great holiday based at Golden Coast topped off with a full week of fantastic weather. Staff were very helpful and the entertainment staff were great with the kids and adults alike. There was lots of onsite things for the kids and the pre-booked extreme package was well worth the value. The shop was well stocked and reasonably priced too. Considering the overall size of the complex it's well run but attention should be focused on key areas. We stayed in one of the silver grade caravans, which was sufficient for our stay with ample facilities. However it was in need of a serious clean. There was a thick layer of dust on top of most wardrobes with a general dirty look present throughout including the shower cubicle and battered looking blinds (one was replaced). As we were blessed with great weather the outdoor pools were busy and enjoyed by many. Guests were left to clean the pool in cleavewood of the usual insects, which there was a good few. This was done with the present net located at the side of the pool and was full of days worth of dead bugs. This could have been done by staff with a 5 minute visit. However this aside I would definitely look to return here in the near future as we all enjoyed
our stay. Finally something staff could consider if possible when guests leave on key days as
my 3 year old son was disappointed neither Billy nor Betty beachball was there to wave them off.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review - it’s excellent to read that your family had a fantastic holiday with us, and you will definitely return in the near future!

Our hard working staff will appreciate your kind words; it is very important to our staff that you and your family have a memorable holiday. I am pleased that you fully utilised our additional facilities such as the shop and our EX34 activities.

I am very sorry that you were unhappy with aspects of your accommodation, and I do hope you reported these immediately upon discovery.

Our Cleavewood area is surrounded by flowers and trees, attracting unavoidable insects and we clean our outdoor pools on opening for the morning, and also regularly thoughout the day, however I am very sorry that you found some insects in the pool.

Thank you for your comments, your feedback is greatly appreciated and we can’t wait to see you soon!

I have just got home from holiday , cottage was clean and had every thing we needed . The pools were clean and my three daughters loved the outdoor pool , and indoor pool. The beach at Woolacombe was beautiful and only a 5 min drive away from golden coast park . Parking is quite expensive at beach area , but they have a bus from park that is only 4 pound for an entire week. We all enjoyed our holiday. Good facilities for young and teenage children.

i was really looking forward to this holiday!!!! the caravan was filthy, hairs everywhere dirt left on the floor, black at the bottom of the bathroom sink, toothbrush holder had all hairs on it,worktops dirty,so we cleaned the caravan before we unpacked!!!!the system of entering the pool area was tokens first from the main office, then by turnstile,if you placed your belongings down and went out to get drinks (as they did not sell food or drinks at the poolside)you had to go and get another token from the main office to get back in BUT!!!!!!if the pool was full to capacity you could not enter until a person came out,so your kids and belongings are in the pool area and your outside.???the system needs looking at,poor cleanliness of all pool areas ,tissue, dirt and paper was left in the water and not taken out for the next days swimming, the sun beds were broken and dirty, could go on and on sooooooooo disappointed and would not recommend this place to anyone and the three sites are run by the same company so i would think about the sate of the others too.

I am very sorry to read that your accommodation did not meet your expectations, and I do hope that you advised our Receptionists of your dissatisfaction so our Housekeeping team could rectify this for you. Our token system is in place for the swimming pools to ensure that children do not run in and out of the swimming pool area without an adult and risk injury, and also to ensure that our free of charge swimming pools are only accessible to those staying on Park. Our swimming pools have a maximum bather load that is set by Health and Safety officers, and we must adhere to this. All of our swimming pools are cleaned before opening in the morning, although I am very sorry to read that you did not find them clean. Without the dates of your holiday it is difficult to look into the specifics, however I can find no reports of cleanliness issues with our swimming pools recently but I do apologise. If you would like to write to me with details of your concerns then we can investigate them and reply to you fully. Our address is Golden Coast Holiday Village, Woolacombe, Devon EX34 7HW.
