The Woolacombe Bay Hotel
Ranked #2 of 4 Hotels in Woolacombe
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 24, 2013

We recently had a seven day stay at the hotel with our grandchildren, which I am afraid to say was not up to expectations. There are several points which we feel need attention for your hotel to claim a 4 star rating. Firstly the room / suite, although clean and well serviced was very sparsely furnished and overlooked on 3 sides so privacy was compromised, very noisy at all times with constant traffic noise from early in the morning to well into the night making sleeping very difficult.
The restaurant although the staff were very friendly and accommodating the food, for a 4 star hotel was not up to standard, it was presented well but the choice and content very disappointing.
The indoor pool was far from a relaxing experience, the male changing area floor and shower were covered in sand. The sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi the same with constant streams of unruly children in and out of the sauna and steam room making the use of said facilities out of the question. The outdoor pool is excellent apart from the fact that the pool furniture seems to be available only to large groups of residents who commandeer it from early morning even though the majority of the group are not present.
All in all not the relaxing enjoyable holiday that we were expecting from a very expensive hotel.

Thank you for your recent review. We are very sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations. At Woolacombe Bay Hotel we pride ourselves on providing the best holiday experience possible which is reflected by our guests and their kind reviews.

In answer to the points raised, we actually had our AA inspectors here the same week that you stayed in the hotel. They stayed in our entry Classic rooms and were suitably impressed that the rooms were spotlessly clean, modestly furnished and well within four star standards, as is the food in our main restaurant.

As you are aware we are positioned a few steps away from the beach, in the small village of Woolacombe. Constant traffic is rarely a problem, especially in the morning or at night, so it is extremely rare that any of our rooms are bothered by traffic noise. This must have been a one off during your stay for which we can only apologise.

During the summer months we are a very busy family orientated hotel, and therefore the indoor pool will be lively. Sand does venture in from guests coming in from the beach, so we see to it that our public entrances and changing areas are cleaned every few hours. We apologise for the fact that you must have been in the changing area before this was done.
With regards to our Bay Lido we have always had very positive feedback, and we are surprised that as you were there for four days out of the seven you feel it was commandeered by other residents. When we are full we cater for over 300 guests, so I am sure that you can appreciate we do not have the space to have a pool which would accommodate everyone.

If you wished to return during the Autumn or Winter months you will see that our hotel is a haven of tranquillity (with the exception of the waves crashing on the beach). We wish you all the best for your future stays away.

After camping nearby and having a meal in the hotel's Bay Brasserie one evening, we decided to treat ourselves so we packed up the tent and booked ourselves in for 2 nights. We are 2 adults and 2 children - 10 and 13.

We managed to secure a family 'suite' with a double bedroom, tiny slither of a bathroom inbetween and then a very small box room containing bunks the other side, so ideal to get us all in and with the major benefit of a sea view, but disappointing in size and furniture etc.

The positives: very helpful staff, food and service in the brasserie excellent, fantastic pool and furniture around the pool (if you can get hold of it as other guests tend to hold onto furniture they're not even using!), beautiful grounds, good spa, good breakfast, great play area for the kids, nicely fitted out modern bathroom, good secure storage for surf gear etc., good car park, but above all it has an absolutely spot-on location.

The negatives: very pricey, room was pokey and very basic (shame as the building is so characterful, but the room was so bland with basic cheap lights and a tiny double bed. Room was stiflingly hot, despite having window open so sleep was erratic. Tea/coffee making facilities OK, but not a sweetener to be found anywhere in the hotel (small point, but fundamental to me), service around the pool area was hit and miss....it appeared that once the member of staff had taken one order from someone who managed to grab them at the right time, they disappeared for ages to fulfil the order, without taking any others at the same time. Food in Doyles appeared to be re-heated and the service was not up to scratch....little touches like topping up the wine glasses were missing (again small point, but we would have expected this in such a restaurant)...overall, Doyles was OK.

All of the above negatives are not deal breakers, and despite all that, we would definitely go back again, but would try and book a better room despite the sky high price.

We stayed for 4 nights, July 29-2Aug, it was fabulous in every way, we just had bed and breakfast which was faultless, our room was at the back , but still had a brilliant view, the staff was extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble, we will definitely go back next year , but hopefully will stay longer.

I went reluctantly into the bar as I was unsure whether it was open to none guest. I was approach by a very polite lady and I enquired if I was able to purchase a drink. I was told I could. Without further ado I bought a drink and sat down looking across the bay. I spent a few hours chatting to the staff, who were more than willing to help. For that I say a big thank you. Food was excellent and served as food should be .

We booked in for one night as we wanted to extend our holiday whilst in Devon, we booked a room with sea view and an extra bed for our 6 year old. We all were extremely pleased, room was a good size even with the additional zip bed. The room had a lovely aspect with views over the pitch n put and out over to Lundy Island. Breakfast was good and plentiful, the waiting staff were friendly and helpful. All in all a nice experience and we will return next year - Alison

This was our 8th year back at woolacombe bay. I absolutely love i everything about the hotel and surroundings. Excellent staff, cleanliness, location. The only small fault I had was the meals were not as nice as a couple of years ago.. Can't wait for next year. Gillian RobinsonUk

A beautiful stay at the hotel during this busy season. I would highly recommend this hotel and all its facilities including parking, pool and gardens. We had enjoyed a wonderful 'last minute booking' stay at this hotel. It was easy to access the beach and all Woolacombe has to offer. Definitely want to come back.

Room Tip: Request a room overlooking the sea. No rooms are air conditioned that I was aware of and this was ne...
