We had an excellent meal on a Friday evening. The food was good quality and well cooked, and on the whole well presented ( ice cream on a scatter of crumble on a wooden board seemed eccentric). The service was excellent - attentive but unhurried - dealing charmingly with the 5 of us and dog. We live locally and this was the best food that we have had in the area. The only draw back was that the background music was too loud, encouraging some of the pubgoers to shout their conversations and making the general noise level in the dining area too loud for normal conversation to be carried out.

Stayed for one night. Very welcoming at all points. Didn't have any dinner but breakfast was really good. Had a full English which was tasty and the girlfriend had salmon and a boiled egg. The smoked salmon is apparently smoked on site. Was delicious! The room was clean and tidy. Seemed to have been newly renovated. Very Ikea but nice enough. No view in our room. Nice shower and comfortable bad. Irritating that the free wifi didn't work in the room. Always think that in places that have crappy phone reception (due location) there should always be good wifi!! Oh and really crappy towels!! Nice shower thou!

I'd recommend but wouldn't shout about it!!

We came down for the New Year weekend, and couldn't have been happier with our choice. The pub is in a fantastic location, and the hosts really put on a show for the big night.

The food was excellent (not just on the night - they were completely booked out for the sunday lunch too - so book early!), and the rooms were spacious and clean.

Were it not for the english weather, this would have been a perfect base from which to explore the devon countryside.

Would thoroughly recommend, and we'll certainly be going back in the summer as, given its location, imagine it's even better!

We went to stay for a couple of days over new year and had the best time. Absolutely fantastic food, great service and very friendly faces to make you feel welcome.
Our room was gorgeous, clean, smart, warm and comfortable – (with a really good shower!)
The New Year Bugsy Malone night was well organized, had a fab band, amazing fireworks and delicious food.
I would highly recommend a visit – thank you to all at The Maltsters Arms that made it so memorable!

A pretty, tidal river side location found down narrow country lanes. We stayed for two nights and we would've stayed longer if they hadn't been booked up already. It is well positioned for exploring South Hams and Dartmoor from.
Our room was THE BLACK HORSE and it was a lovely room, clean and peaceful. The bathroom was bright (and clean) with a tub almost big enough for swimming in and a very good shower.
The Malsters are very dog friendly (tins of dog biscuits about the pub) and ours was made a big fuss of by the resident managers, their dogs, and everyone else.
The food was very good and we ate in both nights. If you've a dietary need/preference, do let them know in advance as they are very obliging. Breakfasts were beautifully cooked and filling enough to last us until way past lunchtime. All the staff were kind, helpful and used their initiative.
There are lots of parts to the pub, a table and chairs for pouring over maps and leaflets near the internal B&B entrance, small areas which cater for a more private evening if you've a larger party than 2 adults and a dog, the main bar and the main restaurant (open plan to the bar so feel very much a part of it which was nice and it meant that our dog could be with us) and a semi covered outside area with a log fire which kept the chill off the smokers. We didn't go downstairs to the Quarterdeck area.

The bed is very high so we could have done with a chair in the room to use while putting on our boots in the mornings but apart from that we wouldn't have changed a thing....except the part where we couldn't add on a couple more nights to our stay....

Room Tip: Black Horse room was calm and peaceful with a king size bed and plenty of room.
