We went down to Tiverton as my husband was doing the Exmoor Beast (bike ride that started about 1 miles from Hartnoll Hotel). I chose the hotel on the basis of being close to the start line and because it would allow me to take my labrador. (10 pounds/night charge - very reasonable).

We got the last room in the house (Room 18) which meant our friend who was coming with us had nowhere to stay but I was advised by the receptionist that the hotel next door (Bolham house) could take him. So that sealed the deal. Bolham has no restaurant so the three of us had all our meals at Hartnoll. The dinners and breakfasts were great. I had the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs both mornings, with fruit and pastries from the buffet.

I highly recommend Hartnoll Hotel - it is a lovely, well furnished and decorated boutique hotel with good service and facilities. However, we had a little tour of Bolham House next door (where our friend was staying) and WOW, that is superb too.... its website does not do its grandeur any justice.

If you have a dog though, our Room (18) was a bit of a squeeze for a double bed and a dog bed. Also, I struggled to find anywhere to walk the dog off the lead which is a problem if they need to do their business. But then I found Knightshayes (National trust) which is a 3 min drive away with great walks for the dog and if you just need a 10 min run around, the gardens around the cricket grounds at the start of the drive are perfect.

Room 18 was in the Gate house, which was on the road. We were not particularly bothered by traffic, but the door sort of opens onto the car park which was a bit strange.

If I was the manager of the Hotel I would be tempted to landscape the area behind the Gate house a bit - couple of garden benches perhaps, and enclose the area for dogs to hang out in.

Otherwise, a great hotel, perfect for what we needed.

Room Tip: Room 18 in the Gate House is cosy (smallish) but smart and comfortable, opens onto the car park but...

I booked the Hartnoll Hotel as a birthday treat and wasn't disappointed. Upon arrival we were slightly concerned about road noise as the hotel was right on what seemed to be a main road (doesn't show it on the website). The staff were warm and welcoming, and we were shown to a spacious and stylish room on the front of the hotel, the large sash windows were double glazed so no road noise what-so-ever. The large en-suite was well presented to a high spec, with a walk-in shower but no bath (not a huge problem). The bar is compact but well stocked with locally sourced ales and cider. Double doors open out into the restaurant and then into a secluded garden. The dinner menu and wine list was extensive and will appeal to all, as does the breakfast menu. One thing that was a bit odd was the fact that people attending a conference were allowed to sit in the breakfast room whilst we were eating. Other than this we had a perfect stay and would recommend it to any one.

Thank you very much for posting a review for us, so glad you enjoyed the party and your stay with us. About half of our rooms have showers, which are large as we find that most travellers prefer this. Our hot water system is pressurised and our guests love our showers. Hope to see you again soon. Had to find a hotel, restaurant half way from us all to meet for a family lunch on Sunday and we chose The Hartnoll Hotel. It was ideal. Met in the lounge with roaring fire and were greeted by the pleasant staff who made us feel very welcome. We had an 18 month old and a baby and they were exceptionally helpful and brought a high chair to the table when we were ready to eat. Food was absolutely lovely, very relaxed atmosphere although still retaining an element of formality. We would all definitely go to the hotel, restaurant again and maybe even treat ourselves to a night at the hotel.

Room Tip: We didn't stay the night but the restaurant is definitely worth going to.

We booked the hartnoll as a place to stay for our wedding in September.
The rooms have all been done up beautifully ( could do with a door on the bathroom in room 1) I used the room to get ready for my wedding and room 1 was the perfect size for this as it allowed enough room for my bridal party to finish getting ready.
The breakfast was very good and the waitress was lovely. The hotel know we were staying for our wedding so it was a lovely surprise to return from
Our wedding to find some cava on ice for us-a lovely thought from the hotel we assumed... Then on check out we were charged for the cava(which neither of us had ordered) lucky for us we had decided not to drink it so we were able to return the bottle. It was a little embarrassing as my husband had to come and get me from the car and we both had to stand there trying to tell them we didn't order it. That and the lady on check in leaving us standing there with our bags half way through check in as she thought it more important to answer the phone and deal with a customer who wanted to amend their dinner booking - obviously forgetting that you should focus on the customer stood In front of you who was there first!

Splendid room (free upgrade from a very small but perfectly adequate one) and the meals were excellent. Only downside; irritating hairdryer. As there is little else of quality in the area I would thoroughly recommend the Hartnoll.

This really is a splendid boutique hotel just off the road and set amongst green lawns and trees.
Our immaculate double bedroom was in a small modern block close to the hotel entrance. Newly furnished, it had an en suite wet room ideal for disabled travellers. Abundant toiletries.Very comfortable bed. Everything spotless.
Stylish dining room serving the best food by far of our twelve day tour of the south west.Elegantly presented partridge at an affordable price. Good wines moderately priced. Lovely breakfast.
Plenty of parking. Friendly and competent staff.
A bonus is the National Tust Knightshayes on the doorstep.

Room Tip: If you have walking problems choose one of the external rooms.
