“Excellent stop-off for breakfast in north Devon”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

We have stopped at the Northgate Inn on several occasions on the way to Ilfracombe. We had an early start from south Wales to avoid the school holiday traffic in July and were definitely ready for a break by the time we arrived at about 10.00am.

We were travelling a couple and our young daughter. I had the full breakfast, which was huge and very well prepared- and I didn't need lunch later!. My wife had the bacon sandwich which was full of good quality rashers. For our daughter, she just wanted hot buttered toast, which came with a choice of jams and marmalade.

Service was prompt and pleasant, toilets were clean, and there is a nice play area outside to give children a break on their journey.

We would certainly stop there again. At a different time of day I would try some of their other meals but I can certainly recommend their breakfast choices.

“What a disgrace”
Reviewed September 1, 2012

Clearly, little has been done to this place since its takeover from little chef. Ripped upholstery, dead flies in the lights and an uninviting layout to the restaurant. Staff were unhelpful and food was massively overpriced and pretty tasteless.
Don't waste your money here.

“Great pit-stop on the way home!”
Reviewed August 31, 2012

Stopped here on the way home after a short break in Woolacombe, and after a visit to the Quince Honey Farm.
On arrival we were quickly seated at a table with a menu waiting for us. The food is no frills pub grub, but there is a specials board with some tasty additional options.
We ordered a portion of Scampi and Lasagne, which arrived at the table within 10mins, very quick service!
The portions were very generous so hungry travellers will definately be filled up, so much so that we were unable to partake in the lovely looking homemade chocolate cake on display!
Overall a very pleasant meal and certainly would return as the place seems very well run with helpful and friendly staff, often lacking in other places we have visited in the past.
Probably the only slight criticism we had was the chairs seem to be coming to the end of their lives with a lot of them with temporary covers where the vinyl/leather has cracked, but this did not detract from our pleasant experience!

“Avoid!!!”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

Disgusting. Can say with all honesty, this is the worst restaurant I have ever eaten in.
Having been on a week's family holiday, we chose the Northgate Inn for our one and only family meal out. Big mistake, the food was tasteless, the fish pie was mainly mashed potato and raw onion with just a few flakes of fish, my son's burger was tasteless and the fish and chips were luke warm , the lasagne was dry and overcooked without a hint of tomato and basically not worth what they were charging.
At those prices you expect half decent food, you won't get it here.
We didn't hang around for dessert, we went straight to the local supermarket and bought our own.
