“How a pub should be”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2013

Great food - the choclate pudding is to die for - friendly staff (and locals) - worth a detour if in the Soith Molton area (especially once the bridge has been rebuilt! - May 2013?). Great atmosphere too. We will be back.

“Hidden Gem!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2013

My friends and I stumbled upon The Grove by pure chance, after getting lost in the countryside, on a Sunday afternoon.
Understandably they were full (always a good sign), but the owner was very nice and friendly and offered to get us a table as soon as one came up (which one did 10 mins later).
The pub has lots of awards in the window for their food all well deserved! My boyfriend had trout to start that he describes as 'out of this world', and the small bate was equally as good.
Being a Sunday we all opted for roast dinners, which were delicious and the yorkshire pudding was possibly the best I've ever had. There was a variety of vegetables which were excellent.
The service was 5 star and I can't recommend this place highly enough, I'm just gutted it's so far away from London!

“First try - Excellent, second visit OK to Good, last visit Poor”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2013

This is a combined review, as we first visited about 9 months ago on a Saturday night. The food was fantastic on our first visit - i had the mixed grill and it was undoubtedly the best i had ever had, cooked beautifully and the rump steak was particularly good. We brought some friends on our second visit - midweek evening - about 6 months ago and the food was not as good as before, and had gone from excellent to average in our opinion. We live in Barnstaple and are happy to travel a bit for good food, but decided we could get food of this standard more locally so didn't return for some time. Out last visit was in Feb 2013; we visited for Sunday lunch with some friends and our children, for a birthday meal. When we got there, we sensed there had been a problem with staff as we heard the guy behind the bar moaning about someone not turning up, and he was quite surly, made us feel like he was going beyond the call of duty by taking our order, The meal was dissappointing - between us we had beef, lamb and pork, and all of it was overcooked, as were the veg, especially the potatoes which were soggy, and the Yorkie puds were not good either. We didn't say anything because our friends had organised the meal as a special occasion and we didnt want to put a dampener on it. Afterwards we found out that they had found it equally dissappointing, not even deserving an average rating.
It's such a shame as i am sure this lovely pub deserves its reputation for good food, but 2 out of 3 bad experiences suggests more than bad luck - have the chefs changed in the last 6 months or so, or did we turn up on the chef's day off?
So i have given a mixed review, based on an average of our experiences. First visit on its own would probably have been all 5s, second mostly 3s and last visit 1s and 2s.

“An oasis in a wild landscape.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

By God, there aren't many beacons in this area! This pub was very welcome. The owner was attentive and very friendly, one definitely felt very welcome. Good range of ales/ cider on tap. Menus that change written on boards (very reassuring). my husband had chicken and chips which was simple with a red wine sauce but utterly devine. A real classic. I had a double chop with a fantastic bread sauce. Both great value.

This is a bit of a gem and seems to be a friendly hub in the area. The decor had KEPT old photos of locals and pub detritus without raping the feel.

Well Done!

“Great pub serving fantastic food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2013

My partner and I had dinner at this pub last week and I cannot recommend it enough. Everything about the experience was first class. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, the pub itself was very cosy and relaxing and the food was absolutely first class. It was also extremely reasonably priced for the quality of the food. The only slight criticism I would make is that the vanilla ice cream was fairly tasteless. If you are in the area you would be wise to pay this pub a visit. I will certainly return.
