Collaven Manor Hotel
Ranked #2 of 3 Sourton B&B and Inns
Reviewed February 24, 2013

The hotel's 2 star rating does not do it justice. We found the service and room to be of a very high standard. The exposed beams and open fireplaces of the old house making a great atmosphere, and all for a reasonable price. We stayed for dinner which was also excellent. The hotel is conveniently located within a very short distance of the A30, making it a good stopover en route to/from the West Country or for visiting Dartmoor.

We stayed here for only one night prior to moving on to a nearby hotel with a large group of friends. What a wonderful choice. We arrived just after dark so couldn't see anything of the wonderful views and sadly because it was pouring with rain when we left, we didn't see much then either!

We were upgraded, as it was a quiet time of year for the business and had a wonderful room with four poster bed, nice furniture including window seat and two armchairs and plenty of room. The bathroom was spacious with the only snag being the lack of a proper shower. ( there is a telephone style attachment to the bath taps but no hook for it or shower curtain/screen) The hospitality tray was very good.

We enjoyed dinner in their restaurant which was very tasty and of a good standard. Bar prices are very reasonable for this type of place.

Breakfast was really delicious with fantastic bread and local produce.

The lounge is very comfortable and we spent a great evening playing chess by a lovely log burner. An added bonus for us were the three gorgeous cats.

All in all a great stay. Lovely owners and staff and a wonderful atmosphere. Fantastic old building with fantastically thick granite walls and fireplaces. If you enjoy a relaxing atmosphere and old quirky buildings you will love it. If you want sanitised glass and chrome then stay away. Will return next year hopefully

We booked this based on tripadvisor reviews and were not disappointed. The hotel is small, charming and picturesque. Dinner and breakfast were very good--the bread was particularly yummy. No extra charge for wifi. The bathroom was modern. We left wishing we had spent more time there. It was so quiet there at night my ears were ringing.

Room Tip: Room 2 was good for our family of three and had a delightfully large window to look out of from the...

We arrived to see a classic granite house with oodles of ancient character. The garden was still a picture, even in November with far reaching views across to Dartmoor, and that was just the car park! A big friendly welcome and we were shown to our clean warm well appointed room. We had been upgraded to the four poster room which had double aspect views and a large comfortable bed. The relaxing downstairs rooms have big open stone inglenook fireplaces with a roaring fire in the lounge adding to the historic ambience. Over each of the five nights we had a different menu serving delicious fresh 5 star food. The breakfast was superb too and set us up for the rest of the day. Good reasonably priced wines and Jail ale in the intimate bar, it had everything anyone could ever want. Add to this, caring hosts that are genuinely interested without being overpowering and you have a winning combination. Looking back I cannot think of one negative note over the week. The acid test, would I stay again? Most definitely and I would highly recommend Collaven Manor if you are looking for a positive hotel experience.

What a gem Collaven Manor Hotel is!...just perfect. The owner/host met us at the door and showed us around, what a lovely gent. We were upgraded to a smashing room with a four poster bed and so much attention to detail, all very grand, like a building you'd see in a period BBC drama. We had already eaten, but the food looked fantastic.Popped into the famous Highwayman pub a couple of minutes up the road and it was like stepping onto a Disney or Hammer-horror set(I dare you to have a peek!)..Breakfast just as good as everything else...Why is this only a 2 star???...lets give it a '5'..well done!

Room Tip: We had Room 4 (four-poster)...Great!!

Such a lovely place to stay. Lots of places for me & my wife to eat and walk the dog on the Moors with outstanding views. Service and rooms were excellent and food was delicious!!
Would certainly stay here again and recommend it to anyone who enjoys walking in and around dartmoor. Very close to lydford gorge, the tor and many other places to visit.

Quiet and comfortable. It is a great place for a romantic weekend. It's very easy to find and the location of the edge of Dartmoor is convenient. Don't be fooled by the AA 2* rating - I think that's been given because it lacks facilities of a large hotel (swimming pool, 24h reception etc), but those aren't relevent to this style of hotel, We went for the dinner, bed and breakfast option, largely because it was only a few £s extra for dinner, and whilst not exactly in the middle of nowhere, the alternatives would be local pubs or a long drive to somewhere better than that. It proved a wise choice with great food and good service. Wine list was reasonably priced. Rooms were clean, well furnished and ensuite was fitted to a high standard. Breakfast was good. Mobile phone reception was good, but no wi-fi. I would say the service was circumspect rather than welcoming which is great because I hate intrusive attention. Some may think it is a little expensive, but if it falls into your price range, I don't believe you'd find better. Mmmm - I don't hand out 5*s very often!

Room Tip: Room 1, the Bridal Suite, was a good choice
