“Devonshire hospitality”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

We stayed at Shaldon in September 2013 and visited the Clifford Arms for the second time. We found the place to be a typical waterside pub.Very friendly, homely atmosphere, dog friendly which normal in Shaldon. There is a wide range of foods.excellently cooked and complete with a range of traditional ales and wines. If you like Jazz this is live on Monday nights.
If you are in the area well worth a visit.

“Very nice pub, helpful staff, good food”
Reviewed September 22, 2013

My family had a good meal here. The pub is lovely and the staff are friendly. My daughter is vegetarian and they cooked something off menu for her, very helpful.

“My Favourite Pub in the world”
Reviewed September 21, 2013

I can't say a word against this pub.

The refurbishment a few years back has made the interior very pleasant and because of the warmth of the locals and the owners, Mike and Linda, the newish feel has not detracted from the atmosphere one jot.

Mike is proud to offer 3 or 4 local ales at all times including the Ringmore Breweries Oarsome which is literally made just up the hill.

Other regulars are Dartmoor IPA and Bays plus a non local guest which when I was last there was Abbot Reserve, a beer not to be trifled with (6+%).

The menu is usually on the black board at the end of the bar and has everything from Fish to Game, Steak and Chicken.

I think that between us we have eaten just about all the regular dishes and all have been excellent.

Like a lot of very good West Country pubs most of the food is local and it shows in the quality.

Apart from great food and great beer Mike is also a big Jazz fan and even if you don't share his passion it is worth wandering along on one of his jazz night just for the atmosphere.

The other great thing about the Clifford is that it is a locals pub. However in this case the locals are a great bunch of characters mostly accompanied by dogs - which are possibly on the way out / back from an alleged "walk".

If you are lucky Brucie the cat may put in a visit and put said dogs in their places.

I can't praise this pub too highly and friends that I have recommended it too have all come back with the same kind of stories.

“CHILDREN NOT WELCOME!!!!”
Reviewed August 30, 2013

We decided to take our two grand children out to dinner at the Clifford ages 3 and 7, but to our disappointment we were told in a very abrupt and rude manor BY THE OWNER that they were not welcome. I can understand that not every one likes to eat in a restaurant if children are noisy or disruptive but our children like many more have been taught haw to behave when eating out, haw else will they learn ? Surely a solution to this would be a family section , we were offered the option [ after been clearly embarrassed,] to eat outside in a CHILLY GARDEN NO THANK YOU. We have visited Shaldon regularly for 40 years many of them with our children, so we thought it would be nice to revisit and reminisce with our little ones. We found no such problem a few steps down the road at the newly opened London , we were made most welcome and had a lovely meal .Thank you to the London.

“Excellent!”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

Dinner for 5 over the weekend was excellent! The Landlord told us upon arrival that they were fully booked and advised us to place food order as soon as we could, which we did. Food arrived promptly and was delicious.....scallops and king prawns in Pernod sauce with rice and kelp was particularly good. I would highly recommend this.
