“A grand old wooden house in a quiet setting with great views and ideally located.”
Reviewed June 7, 2017 for a stay in June 2017

Situated just outside the town of North Tawton up a hill, giving it great views of the surrounding country side. A nice garden provides space to meander. The house is one of the first wooden constructions imported from Norway. It has had many uses over the years but still retains a spacious grandeur with high ceilings and massive windows. The house provides a quiet secluded spot for a base to visit the north Devon coast or Dartmoor. The owners live in the main house and are very friendly, a cream tea was provided on arrival.

“Warm, characterful hideaway for a family visit over Christmas”
Reviewed January 6, 2017 for a stay in December 2016

We chose this apartment as we both love old, quirky buildings and this cosy apartment really suited us very well. It has a fascinating history and several uses as hotel, nightclub and bar and now a family home being lovingly restored. Its enormously high ceilings, wood panels and huge windows with views out to distant Dartmoor make the bedroom and living room/kitchen feel very spacious. We loved coming back to light the stove and make the occasional simple meal. Great central heating system so the stove is just a bonus. It has its own entrance leading to a large hall so feels private rather than sharing the house with its owners. A perfect spot even in Winter and the garden would be lovely in the summer.

“Spacious, warm, lovely apartment with beautiful views”
Reviewed January 2, 2017 for a stay in December 2016

Our was a mid winter stay as we were visiting relatives living in the village of North Tawton. The apartment is the ground floor of the East Wing of a grand Victorian Norwegian House. It had a lovely spacious main lounge/kitchen very well equipped and modern, and we through a dinner party for my mother while we were there. In winter heating is always a worry this place was lovely and warm with a small wood stove which gave it a nice romantic feel. We watched the sun rise through the trees and from the bedroom there were lovely views over the village to Dartmoor beyond. We will definitely return.

“Wonderful Burton Hall”
Reviewed November 20, 2016 for a stay in November 2016

We stayed in the East Wing apartment which is self contained, comfortable, light, spacious and very cosy to return to. On arrival Jean and Martin were kind enough to show us some of the main building which they are in the process of restoring. Burton Hall is a gorgeous Norwegian Lodge which is resonant of a very colourful history. All amenities were at hand and North Tawton is perfectly positioned for access to both moor and coast with many local walking opportunities.
We stayed for two nights, just enough time to finish off the wonderful scones, jam and clotted cream which awaited us on arrival. Would thoroughly recommend a stay here and we are looking forward to going back and spending more time taking full advantage of the location.

“super accommodation with pretty views”

“Super accommodation very close to the town centre of North Tawton and Okehampton only 15 mins away by car. The apartment has a nice spacious lounge with kitchen/diner, comfy bed and newly installed toilet/shower room to give everything needed for a short stay. Pretty views over North Tawton from the bedroom window and the garden, and the setting is a very quirky Norwegian style Victorian House in its own grounds.”

“Lovely rural apartment with great views and owners who go out of their way”

We stayed at Burton Hall for two nights whilst visiting Exeter. It was an easy drive from the city and a beautiful, peaceful location. The hall itself looks weathered from the outside, but we were very pleased with the apartment. It was a chilly evening when we arrived and we appreciated the wood burner. The bed is one of the comfiest I have ever stayed in whilst away - and I take many trips each year. The apartment had everything we needed for our stay and beats B&B's by a mile as it has much more space and you can do everything in your own time. The owners were very flexible when we booked and generously let us have a late check out as we had a late night at a festival. They gave us a guided tour and brief history of the house, which was very interesting. We appreciated their time and kindness. If you are looking for a rural retreat and base from which to explore Devon, this is perfect. I would definitely stay again and would be happy to stay for longer than two nights. No traffic noise, just birdsong to wake you in the morning.

Liked best: Peaceful location
Liked least: Very large window with black-out blind that only just reached the edge in the bedroom meant that it was light in the room, very early. This is a tiny niggle in a lovely stay - and I am a very light sleeper who has a pitch black room at home.
