We asked the restaurant to host our wedding reception (it was a small informal wedding, 24 people), as we were getting married while on holiday in this part of the country (last August -- sorry about the late review!). We chose it unseen, after reading the website and reviews; but if we'd hired an army of wedding planners they couldn't have found us anywhere better. We ate there once the week before the wedding so we've seen it in its everyday state as well as done up for an occasion, and I can honestly say it was fantastic both times.

The family who run it were lovely to deal with, full of ideas, enthusiasm and wit (I loved the foam shrimps in netting instead of sugared almonds). The food was perfect: just exactly what it says on the tin -- fresh shellfish and fish with salad and bread, piles of it, all prepared to perfection. The house and garden are lovely, service friendly with a nice little touch of bossiness that comes from the restaurant knowing exactly what it's doing.

If you want somewhere formal this won't be the place for you; and if you don't like fish I'd avoid it -- they do do a veggie option but really, this is a restaurant that does one thing and does it perfectly. Having said that, they're not remotely snooty, and served up fishfinger sandwiches for the younger kids alongside the lobster perfectly happily.

It's a perfect little gem of a restaurant and we can't wait to go back there this summer.

Terrible food! I am sure most of it was frozen to start with. The lobster was cold, running with water and chewy; and so I could go on about all the fish and seafood. The 'base' (salad, coleslaw and pasta salad) which you have to have was also horrible, if it was home made they need better recipes. Like the review below, they also forgot to bring bread and chips and we had to ask for them. On top of all that, it turned out to be expensive for a meal in someone's front room that even I could have made taste better.

After looking forward to this meal for a long time as I am a great lover of seafood I was very dissapointed by our experience at Morthoe Shellfish. The restaurant is indeed in someone's house and you are surrounded by quirky memorabilia including a pair of stuffed puffins. We visited with a party of 6 adults and 7 children. We had to wait 15 minutes before we were asked if we would like a drink. Then it was a further 25 minutes to wait for our food, as only one part of our order was warm we thought this was a long time to wait. We ordered lobster tail, which is served cold, not straight from the cooking pot. Therefore it lacked taste and was chewy. The mackerel was very strong and salty. The scallops appeared to have been boiled and not pan fried and again unfortunately lacked flavour. The extra chips and garlic mayonnaise had to be asked for as half way through our meal as they had not arrived. My husband also asked for another Exmoor beer this was handed to him with the bottle top still on...We had to ask the waiter to remove it. He only communicated to us using grunts and looked like he has been made to work that evening as a punishment by his parents. The other waitress was perfectly polite and welcoming but unfortunately not enough to make us want to recommend this restaurant or return ourselves. One good thing was though the children all said that the fish finger sandwich was tasty.

Had a lovely lunch here today in their sunny garden! Can't fault the service, we were made to feel very welcome! The food was delicious and reasonably priced for such a nice, fresh seafood platter!

Takes a little bit of effort to find, but what a gem. Down the side of a suburban house lies a garden. Within that garden is a restaurant serving wonderful fresh fish and shellfish. Really really good quality.

Service has a sense of humour, some of the jokes on the menu.
