We asked the restaurant to host our wedding reception (it was a small informal wedding, 24 people), as we were getting married while on holiday in this part of the country (last August -- sorry about the late review!). We chose it unseen, after reading the website and reviews; but if we'd hired an army of wedding planners they couldn't have found us anywhere better. We ate there once the week before the wedding so we've seen it in its everyday state as well as done up for an occasion, and I can honestly say it was fantastic both times.
The family who run it were lovely to deal with, full of ideas, enthusiasm and wit (I loved the foam shrimps in netting instead of sugared almonds). The food was perfect: just exactly what it says on the tin -- fresh shellfish and fish with salad and bread, piles of it, all prepared to perfection. The house and garden are lovely, service friendly with a nice little touch of bossiness that comes from the restaurant knowing exactly what it's doing.
If you want somewhere formal this won't be the place for you; and if you don't like fish I'd avoid it -- they do do a veggie option but really, this is a restaurant that does one thing and does it perfectly. Having said that, they're not remotely snooty, and served up fishfinger sandwiches for the younger kids alongside the lobster perfectly happily.
It's a perfect little gem of a restaurant and we can't wait to go back there this summer.
