We have been to this hotel many times and the food and service has always been excellent. On this occassion we also booked a room as they had a special Valentines meal. This was clearly a bad night for them and I can only assume that they have staff problems. The room that we stayed in was not the room described on Booking.com, there was certainly nothing "superior" about it, the room was very small and there was no "sofa bed" (all of this was described on the booking confirmation). At no time were we asked if everything was ok. The food was very dissappointing and the waiting staff were badly in need of training. All in all a very "Fawlty Towers" experience.

I stayed here as one of a group of three on a "winter warmer" package, which was, on the face of it good value at £70 per person per night. The hotel was chosen partly as a result of the consistently positive reviews on this site, but I was gravely disappointed. We occupied two rooms, one of which (Room 1) was furnished with items that would only usually be seen in a junk shop. I think the bathrooms were fairly newly installed but there were still dark mouldy corners in the grout. In addition, the plug in the sink did not release with the pop up waste and despite requests, this was not mended during our stay. On Saturday evening there was no hot water and on phoning reception I was initially told to just keep running it to get it through the pipes (I had already half filled the bath) and that nobody else had complained so there couldn't be a problem. Eventually, on phoning again, I was told that they would boost the boiler. This had no effect so we were offered another bathroom in a part of the hotel supplied by a different boiler. Whilst being taken to the other room, I was told that there were other people without hot water, so I suspect this is a regular problem, and therefore makes me very suspicious of the previous review entitled "Plenty of hot water". The food in the bar and in the restaurant was fine, although the night we ate in the bar they were extremely busy and I suspect the quality of the food was suffering as it was not as good as others have noted. The piece de resistance of the weekend was when we tried to check out. The bill had a significant number of items on it which we could not identify and on politely querying these, the receptionist started literally huffing and puffing and threw the individual receipts for items ordered in the bar and restaurant at us. Whilst we were checking through these, some other guests had exactly the same treatment when they queried some items on their bill. It transpired that at least six significant amounts of money had been put on our bill for items which we had not had and for which there were no corresponding receipts. The receptionist was so rude and snatched the invoice from us and reluctantly removed some of these erroneous items. Once we had paid, she stormed out of the reception area leaving us and the other bemused guests without such much as a goodbye or thank you. The astonishing thing was that it was the hotel's error in adding spurious items to our bill and yet she did not apologise and behaved as though we were in the wrong for querying these amounts. It was the most extraordinary behaviour I have ever witnessed and was remarkable for a supposedly family run hotel. All in all, a fairly unpleasant end to the stay.

I am very sorry that you did not enjoy everything at the hotel although I am pleased that you thought that our restaurant food was fine.
As you know I have called you and offered recompense to you. I very much hope that you accept this and return to the hotel and have a better and more typical experience with us

We have just recently returned from a weekend staying at the Arundell Arms in Lifton. We wanted to fit as much in to the weekend as we could and enjoy some post fesitve period rejunvenation. The hotel very kindly helped us to put together our itinerary prior to arriving so we could relax straight away. Not having to spend time at reception on arrival to make arrangements is a real plus when away for just a weekend.
The hotel is also dog friendly which was a real plus and they seem to have the perfect balance of making dog-lovers feel at home but also being aware that there are those that aren't and not allowing dogs into the more formal areas. It all worked perfectly, the dogs felt very welcome and had as good a time as we did. We had a mix of shooting, horseriding, dogwalking on the Saturday, nicely rounded off with a pub lunch. We had a good quality walked up shoot that was organised by 3 generations of the same family, who were very accomodating and patient!
The food in the hotel is very good and particularly the service. The vast majority of the produce is sourced locally and a good mix of game, local meats and fresh fish. We ate in all three nights as the choice was so good.
On the Sunday we had arranged a beginners lesson in fly fishing for all of us. It was perhaps a little more daunting given our novice status and the highly acclaimed fishing that can be had in the surrounding area. Luckily the hotel had organised one of their own ghillies to look after us and he did a sterling job with a group that spanned many different ages and with differing and ability. We managed to catch a local trout that was then cooked in the kitchen that evening. It was very interesting to learn a new sport all together and it may be something that some of us will take up in the future.

Thank you for a lovely weekend with fresh air and fine food. A good cure for any January Blues!

Although a solo traveller during what was clearly a very busy weekend before Christmas, I was made to feel extremely welcome by the owners amidst two big parties of guests. The pub next door is a perfect start to an evening of fine dining and unfussy, professional service. Breakfast was superb, bedroom extremely comfortable, very helpful staff, and lots of walks and things to do in the surrounding area ... ready to repeat the whole thing again the next night!

We stayed at the Arundell in order to attend a reunion dinner and travelled with our 16 year old son. We requested and were given a family room with a camp bed. Before we even arrived at our room the staff had determined it unsuitable due to my son's height and provided a single room free of charge. This made our two night stay even more comfortable and relaxed! The food provided both in the bar and restuarant was first class. In the bar we ate wonderfully fresh seafood and the best lambs liver I have tasted while the restaurant served up first class sophisticated dishes with real depths of flavour. The beef was perfectly cooked and the haddock risotto starter a rare treat. The hotel is a rambling, warm and inviting building with plenty of side rooms to the bar and lounge to allow for comfortable private conversations sunk in acres of cushions in front of roaring fires. Outside, the cockpit provides a beautifully proportioned courtyard feature against the backdrop of the gorgeous Devon hills. We felt relaed from the moment we arrived and will definitely be returning to learn to fly-fish in the new year.

Well, this one certainly lived up to expectations !..........I've only ever heard good reports about the Arundell Arms and now I can understand why.
It should be on every serious fly fisher's 'must visit' list as everything is so totally geared to indulge the game angler in the most relaxed atmosphere. Expert yet friendly advice/guiding, exclusive access to unspoilt local waters in beautiful surroundings, and all the comforts of a cosy country hotel. I've already booked return visits which really says it all.
