“Cannot rate this place enough!”
Reviewed February 19, 2014 via mobile

My boyfriend booked two nights here for valentines weekend as a surprise and we were not disappointed!
The deal was £285 for 2 nights standard room, first night 7 course dinner in the restaurant, second night 3 course bar meal, full English and buffet breakfast both days, 1/2 bottle champagne on arrival and cream tea.
Staff were friendly from the start and helpful throughout. Nothing was too much trouble and particularly the waiting staff were hard working and very accommodating. Always happy.
Looks like the hotel has had some recent redecoration, this is not throughout, but adds to the character. Lovely restaurant, bar area, lounge and the food was incredible. I am always wary of set menus but the restaurant meal was 5 star and the bar food not as fancy but just as tasty. Could not fault this or the breakfast or the cream tea which we had delivered to our room.
We even took the dog for an extra £30 but was no trouble. Although the website does state a bed, bowl, towel and treat is provided, unfortunately this was not the case but we had brought our own.
Bed extremely comfy, shower ok but changes in pressure but that was just due to the area. Dartmoor is a beautiful place with plenty of walks and country pubs to visit. If you are after a modern, perfectly polished establishment this is not the place for you. But if you like character, charm and staff where nothing is too much trouble, this is a must-visit.
We had a peak at the superior rooms as the cleaners were in there on our way to checking out, and all I would say is next time we stay, will definitely be upgrading our room! Can't wait. Thank you.

Over £300.00 for dinner bread and breakfast, oh and a pot of tea, just crazy. Rooms adequate for £80.00 a night, not almost £200.00. Food ok but not for £40.00 per heard, go to Cornish Arms Tavistock half the price better quality, plenty of other options.
Disappointed would be the key word, pay the money get value, here pay way over the top, just not worth it

We stayed here for a night on our way down to Cornwall. What struck us most about the stay was the excellent service from all the staff who seemed from the local area. They were very friendly, accommodating and were happy to chat. We had a three course meal in the bar and breakfast in the restaurant and the food was all excellent. We were also given the keys to play in their skittle alley in the building opposite which kept us amused after our evening meal.

The hotel is set up for fishing and hunting expeditions which I would love to do another time. The owner (I think) who was behind the bar in the evening was really interesting to talk to about the fishing in the area.

The only two criticisms I have is that the food is expensive (about £22-24 for a main course) and our room was far too hot even though we turned off both the radiators and opened the windows (although perhaps I could put that down to my age!).

But overall a great hotel and we would return again.

Dear Emily R,

Thank you for your kind review. I am glad that you found us on the way to Cornwall as so many have done over the years and that you liked the hotel and our food. I am sorry that your room was too warm but there are thermostats on all of the radiators in the rooms so you can adjust it next time you are here.

I look forward to welcoming you back in the summer - perhaps you can try our fishing then?

What a lovely hotel this is we have passed it many times on going back home to Falmouth,It was just by chance that we came in to look at the hotel as we stopped for lunch in the pub next door of which we thoroughly enjoyed . Before resuming our homeward journey went into the Christmas Fair that was being held .what a superb building with lots of character and had a real buzz in the air . Really enjoyed looking around the stalls . We will be returning at some point to have lunch or coffees when visiting family as this looks superb venue to eat

Dear Tracey R

I am glad that you enjoyed our Christmas Fair. We were raising funds for Children's Hospice SW and I am pleased that to say it was well attended and substantial funds were raised. This was our third fair and we will definitely be doing it again next year. Hope we see you before then though.

Another short break at the Arundell that included bed, breakfast and a 5 course tasting menu dinner. Last time it was great, this time everything had gone up a notch! The rooms were recently redecorated, comfortable and spotless. The welcome, charming, helpful and professional. The food delicious, well presented and cooked and the bill - surprisingly good value for such an enjoyable all round experience.

My partner and I along with our dog visited the Arundell Arms in September for a weeks stay. We stayed in the Fisherman's cottage which was really cosy and well equipped. The cottage is attached to the hotel and suited us as it had a separate entrance (useful for muddy paws and boots)but we still felt that we could enjoy the hotel experience.

My partner thoroughly enjoyed his week of fishing and had many a catch to bring back to show me in the evening. The hotel fishing guides were very knowledgeable and the hotel provide all the amenities that a fisherman needs such as drying room and deep freeze.

The hotel has great facilities, fantastic food and is very welcoming. What sets this hotel apart from others is the staff who seem to go out of their way to provide great service (always with a smile). The staff were extremely friendly in all areas of the hotel and we enjoyed chatting to them.

Our dog became ill on day two of our break so we didn't get to explore the area as much as we would of liked. However the staff were really helpful assisting us to locate the nearest vet and paying a keen interest in to how she was. I must mention the staff at the pub who helped us one evening when our dogs bandage fell off. A lovely staff member asked her husband to bring all the necessary items we would need down to the pub so that we could re bandage it ourselves until we could get to the vet in the morning. Thanks so much! Our dog was made to feel extremely welcome by hotel staff which really made things special for us, it was lovely to sit and have a drink and a meal without the worry of leaving the dog in the evenings.

The food is of a very high standard with a great wine list too,we happily worked our way through the menu during our stay.
We will definitely be returning next year!

Dear Hijola,

Thank you for your great review.
The new self catering houses have been a great success and I am really pleased that you have enjoyed your stay with us. I have never previously counted but now I know that it is 36 paces from the Cottage to our pub!
Our staff are great and genuinely our greatest asset. I hope your dog has now recovered and that we see all of you back at the hotel soon.
