“Excellent hotel”
Reviewed April 20, 2013

We chose this hotel having found it on Travelzoo and reading the reviews. We certainly were not disappointed, the whole place has a lovely feel to it. The staff are all very pleasant and the service is excellent.
We chose the garden view room, it was spacious and nicely furnished, with lovely french windows overlooking a small courtyard garden. The en suite was a little disappointing though and could do with refurbishing and the TV very small, which we were quite surprised at for a room which should be priced at £200 per night! The very comfortable bed made up for it though.
We had the 5 course tasting menu on the first night and it was superb and certainly worthy of the 2 rosettes. We also had the matching wines which were excellent. It was lovely to relax in the guest lounge with it's huge comfy sofas and log fire.
We would certainly recommend it to others and would stay again.

Dear Sharfur,

Many thanks for your review. The room you refer to is room 25 and one of my personal favorites. The bathroom is on our list for refurbishment as is the replacement of television (a new television arrived only today for one of the other rooms being refurbished). However I am very pleased that you enjoyed your stay here, and hopefully we will be able to welcome you back in the future.

Best wishes, Adam Fox-Edwards

My Wife and I had a Travel Zoo couple of night here to visit Eden and other sites in the viscinity.
On the plus side the Staff were very friendly and a pleasure to deal with, the hotel decor and ambiance downstairs is very good and the food is excellent too. We had the evening taster menu as well as the two breakfasts and enjoyed all of it.
Our only reason for the title of this review was the bedroom. In contrast to the downstairs, the bedroom was tired. The carpet was marked in several places, the kettle placement was such that the lead was not long enough to reach the table where the hospitality tray was situated. This meant that we had to bend down to floor level to make our morning cuppa which at our age is not easy. The room was very hot but the sash window lacked any means of holding it open for ventilation, and in the end we had to use the top off an aerosol to wedge it open. These are minor failings but could be put right without a huge cost.
The worst black mark was that the rim of the toilet was unbelievable filthy. A girl was sent to deal with it promptly and she was appalled at the mess and took 15 minutes to clean it up.
However that said the deal that we had was tremendous value and we enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Rooms adjoining the road are noisy if you open a window but the double glazing makes them acceptable...

Dear silverfox1942

Thank you for your review. We are very glad that you enjoyed your stay here with us. The hotel is currently undergoing a refurbishment program and soon all of the bedrooms will mirror the standard of the public rooms. We are aware of some staining on certain carpets. These are caused by a number of things such as guests accidentally spilling red wine (as you will be aware), but we do not make charges to guests for such accidents as you know. We have also spoken to our house keeping department who are now aware of the undersides of some of the toilets having been missed. This problem is now rectified. But please do make us aware should you visit again as it would good to hear your feedback of our newly refurbished rooms.

Kind regards, Adam Fox-Edwards

My husband and I took advantage of the £129 Travel Zoo deal and can highly recommend it. Welcome was most warm, food excellent - both evening meal and breakfast. Indeed, the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon for breakfast was the best I have ever had. Only negative comment is that the wine we had was pricey for the quality of it.

We have just spent a night with our 2 teenage children at this lovely former coaching inn and now splendid country hotel!

Used the Travel Zoo offer for £129 per room which included bed and breakfast plus the 5 course tasting menu served with canapés and a glass of champagne. We also chose the flight of wines to accompany which seemed very reasonable at £20 per head.

The dietary requirements of a vegetarian daughter and a son who does not like fish were wonderfully catered for!

Thoroughly enjoyed all the courses and also the excellent breakfast next morning!

The staff were all professional and courteous and the service excellent.

The only couple of things I would mention were that we had the room at the top of the stairs and were woken by the vacuum cleaner in the lobby below and would also agree one or 2 parts look a little tired but they are clearly working there way though the building improving as they go.

One of the best things for me is that the family run hotel clearly listens to feedback as a number of earlier comments have been addressed, such as real ale in the cocktail bar!

Would definitely return!

Very comfortable hotel with a lovely ambience.
Stayed two nights B&B room was very clean and bright, but a little tired
also our room was facing the road which if you were a light sleeper may disturb you,as lorries tend to stop and pull away in the early hours.
Note the windows did have secondary glazing
Breakfast was very good with excellent attentive staff as were all the staff.
Main business is shooting and fishing which is in a good location.
The drinks are a little more expensive in the cocktail bar.
Would go back again.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the front due to traffic noise

We have stayed at this hotel several times and have never been disappointed. Because of its reputation as a great hunting, shooting and fishing sort of place we were initially unsure whether we non-sporty sort of people would fit in. No worries! We were welcomed, fed and watered magnificently.
So much so that we booked to go back on a taster fishing course where we waded, cast, made flies and actually caught and eat a fabulous trout.
The restaurant is very good indeed for a country hotel and the short breaks are often extremely good value.
Rooms in the annex at the back are a little basic but the newly refurbished ones in the main house are great. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Go for one of the refurbished rooms in main house

Dear Tony B

I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay here! And even more so that you have booked on to a fishing course. Our instructors have taught thousands to fish over the year and many of them return on a regular basis so I am sure once you get 'hooked' on our fishing you will join them!

We stayed on a Travelzoo offer with an extra night at only £70 B&B.
It was comfortable and dog friendly with a good ambience.
The staff were excellent throughout the hotel and restaurant. All friendly and attentive.
The food was excellent, my only slight criticism is that perhaps wine at a starting price of £27.50 for the average bottle is a little on the high side.
Breakfast was very good with a good choice of cooked to order items and extremely good Kippers.
On the second night we ate in the Courthouse bar which also had a great ambience enjoying good food at good prices with the usual excellent service.
Our room (23) overlooked the car park was ideal for the dog although it was a little on the small size with no drawer space.
The bathroom was a little tired by modern standard although immaculately clean and with good quality linen.
Although the location is not excellent being on a main road in a area where Ambrosia dominates the surrounding countryside is spectacular.
To sum up a superbly run hotel that could teach many others the importance of staff training.
We will return!

Room Tip: Perhaps an upstairs room might be an option

Dear oldandnackered

Thank you for your review. I must make apologies to you that our house wines which start at £20 weren't made known to you. Something which I will investigate.

I am pleased that you enjoyed room 23 overlooking the garden. It has great access to the carpark from a corridor so is ideal for dog owners. I am happy to hear that all our staff were excellent throughout, we have a great team of which I am incredibly proud of.

Many thanks, Adam Fox-Edwards
