We last stayed here in 2005 having been regular annual visitors for a number of years prior to that.

This is the sort of comfortable hotel you visit in winter and secretly hope that you'll be snowed in for a week! Our room was as inviting and comfortable as we remember from our previous visits.

The hotel has a very comfortable lounge where we had afternoon tea and cake on our arrival in front of the log fire. Our first evening meal we had in the hotel bar, which incidentally serves up a nice pint of Jail Ale, and the second night was in the restaurant.

Hilights of our meals were the scallops, absolutely delicious, and pigs cheeks which I'd not tried before but thoroughly enjoyed; I had reservations over the duck, it seemed a bit 'chewy'.

The breakfasts were a real treat and both my wife and particularly enjoyed the scrambled egg and smoked salmon which strangely was served different ways on different days.

How does it compare with last time? There is a greater selection on the menu and the meals are perhaps more substantial but the dishes are not as decoratively laid out.

We travelled down from Kent for our weekend and would recommend this for a comfortable self-indulgent weekend, and would welcome the chance to return.

Room Tip: We find the rooms in the older part of the hotel seem to have more character

My partner and I stayed at the hotel as part of a special TravelZoo offer and overall we were not disappointed.

It is really refreshing to visit an independent hotel that has character and that is not just the same as every other hotel. The greeting at reception when we arrived a good and we were taken to our room and our luggage was carried for us.

We stayed in room 5 on the 1st floor overlooking the gardens and the view even in winter was really quite pleasant. The room is furnished with individual items which we liked and was overall clean and bright. There are a number of issues that could do with addressing:
1. Bedside lamps do not have matching shades 2. Bedside lamp on left as you lay in bed did not work 3. Other bedside lamp had a broken foot so the lamp does not stand up straight 4. A shelf at some point has been above the radiator but is no longer there but the marks and drill holes and raw plugs are still showing 5. Light switches and doors could do with a wipe. Quite a lot of dirty finger marks 6. One of the down lighters in the bathroom (over sink) was not working 7. Kettle still had water in from last occupant and when we looked inside was not a pleasant sight.

Please note the above a little niggles. The bed was lovely and comfortable and had beautifully white and pressed linen that made you want to stay there all day.

We had booked the tasting menu in the main restaurant. When we arrived it was devoid of any atmosphere - no music, very bright lighting and everyone was whispering. The staff worked well and the food was wonderful and I can't complement the chef and kitchen staff enough - it's just a shame that the surroundings don't quite match the quality of the food.

Breakfast was served in the same restaurant and was I have to say a tad shambolic. At one point some kippers were left on a table behind me in the centre of the room and stay there for about 10 minutes till they were taken away. Missed toast at some tables and one could having got tired of waiting stood up and took the toast from another table which had not been cleared. Breakfast service needs attention as its the meal that you leave with in your head and again the food was good but the service and atmosphere were lacking. To be honest at one point there were three couples left in the room and we all laughed as we each hadn't had something that we had either been offered or we had asked for.

One little error - I asked for an iron and ironing board which was delivered very quickly. I used it and popped it outside the room at about 1930 and there it remained and still was when we checked out. I would have hoped that house keeping or someone would have removed it at some point.

Overall a good experience. Would I visit again. Yes I would as the glitches mentioned are small and the staff work very hard. Food outstanding. Once the few issues are addressed then you have found a "little gem"

Dear loulouplymouth

Thank you for your review. I am very glad that you enjoyed your stay and meals here. I am not sure what happened with the canapes on the eve of your stay, usually they are bursting with flavor and to quote one guest "it's like a little party going on in my mouth"!.

I was pleased to read that there was no problem for our staff to swap your sweet for a cheese board! We do try to accommodate any dietary requests for our guests as it always ensures a great dining experience such as the one you had. We'd very much look forward to welcoming you back to us, and will be very happy to swap your dessert for cheese again!

We found this Gourmet Break on Travelzoo and thought it would be great idea for my husband's 'big birthday' to take eight friends away for the night. We all had a great time and the setting of the Arundell Arms was perfect - we spent the afternoon in the lounge on the big comfy sofas chatting by the log fire and had tea, and later champagne and canapes before enjoying the most delicious five course tasting menu - with some excellent recommended wines to complement each course - the whole meal was cooked and presented to perfection. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. Our room was very clean and equipped and furnished to a high standard, I loved the huge extra large white fluffy bath sheets!. We were all thrilled with our stay and will definitely recommend this hotel.

Dear Daphne T,

I am delighted that you and your party enjoyed your time here at The Arundell. We often play host to birthday and other celebrations alike and guests seem to have a great time. Our lounge is often referred to as a 'home from home' which is obviously how your party found us to be. We always want our guests to feel as comfortable as possible (some find the sofas a little too comfortable and are often found snoring in front of the fire!). You and your party are welcome back anytime and we will be delighted to host any future events for you!

Kind regards Adam Fox-Edwards

We booked a 2 night offer with Travel Zoo for my birthday w/end of 4/5 January 2013, having read reviews on Trip Advisor. I woke up in the car park after a long journey to Devon. I was amazed when I opened my eyes. The photography is very clever, I didn't for one minute imaging the hotel was situated on the main road! However, we made our way to reception, to be greeted by a rather grumpy receptionist, who showed us to our tired, smelly bedroom (no wonder the windows were open), needless to say it was also freezing. The room was very tired, I predicted as much, as we walked the corridor, paper peeling off walls, gloomy, quite a depressing corridor. We made our way to the bar and decided we couldn't stay in this hotel for 2 nights, so proceeded to rebook the St Moritz in Cornwall (wow, so much better). In the meantime, we requested an upgrade. Another lovely receptionist was very accommodating and gave us the key to look at the alternative room at our leisure. This was so much better, obviously recently been modernised (bathroom still a little worn). I do question, why hotels don't give their better rooms in the first instance (especially when TravelZoo promote upgrade where possible). Do hotels just assume you will put up and shut up?? The hotels saving grace was the food - lovely tasting menu & nice wine and a hearty breakfast. Staff were also lovely, but needless to say there was not much atmosphere, restaurant a little large. I guess as with all hotels, 3* is what it is, so if you like the finer comforts, stick to 4 and 5*.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade

Dear LIW0396,

Thank you for your review. Firstly our apologies that the hotel didn't live up to your standard. I agree that some of our rooms are still a little tired and in need of updating as is the main corridor. The rooms are undergoing a refurbishment program as we speak. In your review you refer to Travel Zoo offering an upgrade. This isn't entirely correct as upgraded rooms attract a supplement. This is stated clearly on the Travel Zoo offer page.

You also mention the use of clever photography. The images on the front page of our website scroll through and clearly show that the front of the hotel is situated on the road in the village. As an old coaching inn it is impossible to try to disguise this fact, so we don't try to. Obviously not all bedrooms are situated road side, and many guests in fact request rooms to the rear of the hotel which we are more than happy to provide should availability allow.

We are very glad that you enjoyed our food in our 'very large' award winning restaurant where our food is cooked and prepared by one of only 80 Master Chef's in the UK.

Regards Adam Fox-Edwards
