We went with friends & dogs today after a beautiful walk to the beach. The restaurant has changed hands since our last visit, in October. The food is very different to our last visit. Lovely Mediterranean options...Aubergine, mozzarella & tomato piadas, spicy slaw, great fish soup. Fabulous menu. I wish they still offered afternoon tea £20 laden with cakes, sandwiches, pastries & tea! Although it's in a remote place, the restaurant is still very busy, which is good!! Highly recommend!

We went 2 times at the Gara for dinner. The service was correct but a bit slow on our second visit. Nice list of wines with good food and a well-balanced menu. The view is just amazing but you really need to have a table near the windows (so better to book). We have also experienced a coffee / tea break in the afternoon and it was nice as well. Last point, dogs are welcome. Enjoy !!

This property has only recently been developed, and must be congratulated on its stylish modern approach, which somehow blends in seamlessly with the unique and remote cliff top position. The staff are exceptionally polite, welcoming and friendly, and the food is very good value and quality.
Try a cream tea! The size and quality of the fresh scones will put a smile on your face.
The drawback is getting there. The drive from the " main" road is protracted , very narrow and you must be prepared to back up!
failing that walk there from salcombe via the ferry to east portlemouth. you need to be average fit and it will make the discovery all the more worthwhile.

Having made a 16 mile trip to get to Gara rock to enjoy a early evening meal we were left thoroughly disappointed. We have been following the progress of the development over the last 5 years with great interest. Coming for the first time when it was only just in the planning stage. When we arrived on A tues afternoon we asked if we were able to have a snack. We were rudely informed that food would not again be served until Thursday. Cakes were visible at that time, but by the time we had discussed what to do the cakes had been put away. We asked if it would be possible to have cakes with our drinks to keep us going and were told "no". Then asked if they had pimms once again a flat "no" was the only reply. Cookies had still not been removed so we were begrudgingly allowed one of these. Throughout the person serving, who we discovered was the restaurant manager, was incredible rude, disinterested and showed no willingness to be obliging. No customer care shown at all. It left us feeling thoroughly disappointed and questioning whether to bother again. Please would the management consider their staff training policy because our experience is not at all in line with what we would expect from what should be a prestigious establishment

Only stop here if you've an hour or two to kill enjoying the view. The service is glacially slow. The staff are disinterested and unfocussed. When we finally went to track down our order it was to be found sitting on the side having gone cold! All we received was an insincere apology; management were as disinterested as their staff! The final ignominy was having to wait over 15 minutes to pay at the one available till. It's not even the main school holiday season yet, heaven help them if they get busy! We are ordinary locals and so will be advising our friends, who walk that coastal path regularly, to 'walk on by.'
