“Fantastic - wish we could've stayed longer!!”
Reviewed July 9, 2013 via mobile

This campsite is fantastic, the family that run it are lovely, the facilities were clean and modern, and the views are beautiful.

We were warmly welcomed, and phil pops round each day to say hi. There's yummy croissants you can order for breakfast, and cold wine in the shop fridge.

We are so lucky to have had the heat wave while we were there and spent every day at the beach.

Beachcomber - great fish & chips, and sandwiches etc which we ate on the beach!

Hope and anchor pub - we drank their cider and ate their chips!

Local post office - great for all the things you couldn't fit in the car like a bucket and spade.

Phil told us how up get down to the cove, it's very easy - it is quite a trek with kids but so worth it, we drove one day!

Overall we can't wait to go back!!

I have been visiting the South Hams area (particularly around Hope Cove) for a few years now in various types of accommodation however I think I have now found my favourite spot! I stayed at Karageen for 3 nights in June with my Mum in our campervan and we both really enjoyed it and if it hadn't been for work commitments we would have extended our stay. There are plenty of pitches with different qualities (some with sea views and some more sheltered) to go for and the facilities are very good and kept very clean. Phil and Nikki are very friendly and always pleased to help out and the bread and croissants in the mornings were great.

An amazing site, beautifully kept and tranquil location. Hot showers, clean facilities and the owner makes you feel at home. Had booked four nights but stayed an extra one as weather was lovely. Such a relaxed atmosphere. Booked to go back as it was so nice! Worth every penny.

Had a very relaxing weekend at Karrageen in the sunshine. I turned up without booking, but that wasn't a problem. I was given a warm welcome and told that I could choose where I would like to camp. It was a windy day, so I was advised to drive around the site and find a sheltered spot. The site is on a slope (but with level terraces), split up by hedges. I really liked the fact that it wasn't a big open field with everyone around the edge, or in lines. I chose to camp near the bottom - more secluded, but further from the facilities, but could have chosen to camp at the top with stunning views and a shorter walk to the toilets and showers.
The onsite shop is very useful - I charged my phone there in return for a donation to a local charity. I didn't try the food, but you can also buy evening meals there and pre-order croissants, etc for the mornings.
The toilet and shower block was immaculate with plenty of hot water. The minimum charge of 20p for a shower was fine for me. No complaints about the dish washing area either. The laundry facilities also looked fine, but didn't try them.
The surrounding area is lovely. Be prepared for hills, but the Port Light is only about 15 minutes walk away and serves evening meals. Hope Cove is also a pleasant walk away - a really pretty village and the views along the coast are stunning.
If you are prepared to drive down the narrow lanes to get to Karrageen, you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: A good selection of pitches. You can either camp nearer the bottom of the field for privacy, but fu...

Judt arrived back after 4 night half term stay. First time camping for my daughters aged 8, 4 and 2 and they have been sad all the way home at leaving such a wonderful place. There's no bar, restaurant or entertainment but just old fashioned fun in an outstanding location. Phil runs a wonderful campsite for the whole family. The kids run wild, having adventures while mum and dad can relax knowing they'll find their way home for the 10pm curfew! Excellent showers and great shop with fresh croissants, sweets and beer - what more do you need? A beautiful part of the country, unspoilt and reasonable. Has reinstated my faith in uk holidays after a few Cornish let downs. Can't wait to return.

OK, we had the hottest bank holiday in a generation but this was a truly memorable stay - May 5th and 6th. The site is extremely well run and well kept without being at all fussy. The same family have been doing this for 26 years so they know their stuff. The welcome was great even though we arrived mid-afternoon when the family were having a get together with grandparents. Really helpful. I like the fact that the owners do the rounds, chat to the guests and just make you feel welcome. No noise at all at night. If you want a club house with disco and karaoke then this isn't for you. But if you want a nice relaxing stay that's good for the soul with fabulous walking in every direction, then this will suit you just fine. The nearest pub is a mile or so down the valley in Hope Cove, the Hope and Anchor, and it's certainly worth the walk. For the more energetic, a walk from the site around Bolt Tail to Hope Cove is under 2 hours. The pub keeps a very good pint of Proper Job so you'll get your reward. The next day we cut across inland to South Sands just below Salcombe and came back around Bolt Head, which was the best part of 4 hours - fabulous views all the time. This is a great place to stay and we had just the best time. As a measure of how good a time it was we stayed the Monday night and went straight into the office on Tuesday morning - 2 hours away - rather than waste a speactacular evening doing washing and thinking about work!

Room Tip: We stayed in pitch VII, which was great for us as we have a collie who is very protective of his ter...

On arriving at Karrageen we completely misunderstood the signs re Reception and drove into the campsite first. Finally understood what an increasingly agitated man was trying to tell us and drove off to find the driveway to Reception [all very clear if proper attention given to the signs]. A warm welcome from Nikki who offered us the choice of 2 sites. We chose Tree Terrace - very private and between two rows of trees however beware not all pitches have power so be sure to request a powered pitch if required. Tree Terrace is non-powered however Phil offered us a choice of moving to a powered site or running a cable across to a nearby powered site. Karrageen is a very well run site offering level pitches though not all have views. The upper terraces do provide views to the sea, others provide views over the valley and some have no views at all. Some of the pitches, such as Tree Terrace, offer seclusion if wanted. Phil comes around everyday to ensure everyone is alright especially if there were very heavy winds the night before. 20p per shower is very reasonable and provides sufficient water especially as there is a pull cord which allows turning water on/off as required. 20p is also needed for hot water in the wash-up area sited in the laundry. Everything is kept very clean. Our only comment is that the shower block is situated amongst the static caravans rather than in the camping area. Not sure why this should be given statics have their own ablution facilities. As other reviewers have already stated, Karrageen is well placed for touring South Hams and it is easy to walk down to Hope Cove to access the Coastal paths round to Bantham or over to Salcombe. A thoroughly enjoyable week indeed.

Thank you very much for your kind words and so pleased to hear how much you enjoyed your holiday with us. We agree with you about the position of the facility block but were advised by the local planning authority 25 years ago when we purchased Karrageen that they would never give us the permission to re-site it! Caravan and camping began at Karrageen in the 1920's with horse-drawn caravans and only in the field today housing the static caravans and facilities. Check out our facebook page for very old sepia photographs of the days back then. Hope to see you again soon!
