Not only were Phil and Nikki friendly and welcoming they are also very good cooks. I refer to the takeaway service that they offer at the Karrageen campsite, just the ticket after a 7 hour drive and erecting your folding camper. I have to strongly recomend thier homemade pies, make sure you have an appetite.
The campsite is very well layed out, with large trees and hedges to block sound but not the views, which are stunning. Not only is the site suitable for families but also for the couple that would like a bit of romance and peace.
My wife and I would definately return...thanks Phil for making our stay in Devon such a wonderful experience. (Bryan & Debbie)

Our family of 6 spent 10 days at Karrageen Campsite and we loved every minute of it. We received a warm welcome upon arrival (good start after a long journey) and our pitch was ready for our tent. The campsite is clean and well maintained i.e no litter etc. In the evening the campsite was quiet and is excellent for families trying to get little ones to sleep! We had electric hook up which was working with no problems. We were placed in the main campsite but they open the 'top field' in August to facilite more visitors, if you are booking we would recommend the main campsite especially if you have kids as the top field share the same facilities as the rest of the site but they have to walk a further distance and cross a road. It is also more sheltered in the main site. However they do have fantastic views.

The facilities are better than other sites we have used but if you are planning to camp here remember to bring lots of 20p coins, you will need them for the shower. Also £1 coins are required for the washing machine and tumble dryer. The shower and the washing facilities did cost us quite a bit for the 10 days with a family of 6 but I suspect most sites are the same. This year it cost 20p for a 2min shower, £4 for a normal wash using the washing machine and the tumble dryer cost £1 for 20mins. One point to note for next year (2012) is that they are refurbishing the washing facilities, this should make a vast improvement. However it was good to see that the showers and toilets were being cleaned on a regular basis.

The owner Phil is very friendly and would walk round the campsite a few times a day checking that all visitors were ok and was happy to chat about local facilities etc! His daily weather reports were useful too!!

There are lovely beaches around this site with Hope Cove only a mile away. Our kids loved this quiet beach. If you are looking for a family day out contact Canoe Adventures ------- for a lovely canoe trip up the River Dart, our whole family loved this activity and we cannot speak highly enough of the Canoe Adventure Company. If you are looking somewhere to eat during your stay try the Kings Arms in Kingsbridge (about 15-20min drive from the site), excellent food and service.

In short we loved this holiday and plan to return next year, according to Phil they will be updating the website this autumn so you will be able to see the layout of the campsite and be able to choose your pitch!

We hope this review was helpful....

Room Tip: Choose the main campsite if you have small children, it is closer to the facilities

We have camped here for the last four years and weather aside, Karrageen is our preferred site.
The site is really well laid out and the pitch sizes are generous, we have a large Outwell tent and there is always plenty of room.
The top field is a great place to stay for views, although it can be breezy and is less well protected than the lower field terraces.
The shop is excellent as are the pain au chocolate........
Only one suggestion aimed at Phil, that is to put an additional soap dispenser in the gents washroom.

We have just returned from five night stay on a non serviced pitch at this lovely little site. We camped in the top field which is offered in high season, despite being a little walk from the facilities, the views - directly overlooking the beautiful Hope Cove less than a mile over the fields - could not be matched, simply stunning! We received an warm welcome from the owners on arrival and were shown to our pitches, there is a small shop from which you can order freshly baked bread and pastries - ideal for breakfast and picnic planning -they really could not have been more helpful. It is a quiet site with large pitches and plenty of space for the children to play, there is not play area but this was not missed with some great hills to roll down and fields for ball games. The site was full despite feeling uncrowded therefore the wash facilities were always spotless and never too busy.
This site was ideal for exploring the area, we'll definately be back.

As a couple, my wife and I have always previously booked on much smaller sites with a lower number of pitches than Karrageen, so it was with slight trepidation that we booked earlier this year.

As soon as we arrived our fears began to be laid to rest. The site has 70 pitches for touring tents and caravans plus a fair number of static caravans available to book as well. A good number of the touring pitches have electric hook ups. Yet despite this sounding quite large, the site has been wonderfully terraced and landscaped with plenty of trees and hedges; which gives the feeling that you are on a much smaller site.

The camp-site is excellently maintained by Phil and Nikki and their “team”, Phil walks round every day at least once to check if there are any problems, to offer assistance or just to chat to see how your holiday is going (Nikki is from Leicester so we often discussed our common knowledge of the city and the rugby team with Phil).

Facilities on the site are very good, despite the site being full when we stayed; neither my wife nor myself had to wait for a shower, basin or toilet once during the week. The showers do require multiples of 20p per two minutes but if you plan for this it is not a problem.

Contrary to another review read, there are plenty of water points scattered round the site and the electric supply was fine during our stay. The shop on site has everything you would need for your stay - food, toiletries, camping sundries and it’s licensed too, so if you’ve forgotten the wine for celebrating putting the tent up, they have a good selection to help you out. We made good use of the take away service they provide, having lovely pain au chocolate, baguettes and a Chicken Jalfrezi, all delicious and very fairly priced, as is everything in the shop.

We would highly recommend taking in a sunset from the top field.

Hope Cove is just a mile away and it is a very pleasant walk indeed (although uphill on the way back)

In short - The pitches are great, the views amazing and the hosts are wonderful. The perfect recipe for the cream of Devon campsites.

Spent a lovely 2 weeks at this caravan park. The owners Nikki and Philip were very welcoming and friendly and our static caravan was spotless and well equipped. Beautiful peaceful location, well stocked shop and good laundry facilities. Very close to Kingsbridge and Salcombe, not to mention many beaches.
If I had to find a negative then it would be the access road which is rather narrow in places (nothing that the owners can do about that!!) and a childrens play area would be great.
Would thoroughly recommend it and thanks for a great holiday!

This was our second trip to Karrageen campsite, we camped in a medium sized tent with two small children. We love this friendly, quiet and well maintained campsite.

The campsite is relatively small, about 70 pitches I think, all level and spacious, we went out of the school holidays so the campsite was nowhere near full.

The owners, Phil and Nikki are helpful and welcoming.
The onsite shop is small but has everything you need - including the best local burgers and sossies and fresh bread baked every morning. (Yum!)

There are lovely views over the coast towards Plymouth.

The roads to the site are narrow and the road down to Hope Cove is a bit too narrow to walk with a pram or buggy - so we drove down even though it is only a mile. You can park on the 'Hope Bypass' for free.
There is no mobile phone signal on the main field, although you can walk uphill to talk and text, or if you are like me, just switch off for a couple of weeks.

Room Tip: Choose a sheltered pitch off season the top of the field can be breezy.
