“Golden Wedding Celebration”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

Although not a review of the overall experience that the hotel offers I felt compelled to write a few words. My parents decide to hold their Golden Wedding celebration at the Commodore at the end of August. Their choice couldn't have been better. The staff were extremely helpful, friendly and efficient. The food was excellent and the view of the Torridge and Instow beach with the various boats was superb. These ingredients were key in cementing a fantastic and memorable day enjoyed by all.

We've just returned from our first stay at the Commodore with a group of friends, and I very much doubt it will be our last.
The hotel is not part of a corporate chain and how lovely it was to stay somewhere unique and where the staff truly make you feel so welcome.
We had a sea-view room and this was comfortably furnished and had a beautiful balcony with sun loungers. (Sadly, we managed to time our stay to coincide with some of the wettest weather we've ever experienced in the west country, so weren't able to take advantage of this facility.)
The dining room is large and tables are well spaced and there are comfortable bars and lounges for pre and post dinner drinks.
We had opted for DBB and ate from the table d'hote menu each night. If I have one slight criticism it would be that I would have liked to see more local fish and shellfish on this menu, but that's personal choice, and there are a la carte menus and bar menus available, which would give more choice. The food was all excellent and we felt that the wine selection was good and well priced.
One of the huge plus points of this hotel has to be the staff. Without exception, they were all helpful and friendly and quick to memorise personal preferences. For example, our breakfast drinks order was memorised and brought to our table without having to ask for it. That's service for you!
The décor in the public areas is neutral, well maintained and comfortably furnished. Our room was spotlessly clean and serviced every day by efficient staff and we always had a plentiful supply of fluffy towels and toiletries. The beds were really comfortable making for a good night's sleep.
When we stayed the majority of guests were in the "55 plus" age range and the ambience is well suited to those of us who are in this bracket. That said, I'm sure families with children would be made just as welcome.
All in all, this is a lovely hotel in a lovely place and hopefully, when we next visit, the weather will be a bit better and we'll get to watch the sunset over Appledore!

Room Tip: It's well worth paying a little extra for a sea-view.

This professional, friendly unstuffy hotel is an experience not to be missed, the service from this young polite team is 5 star, the food is wonderful, fresh, imaginative with a good choice for all tastes & Wine List to match. We had a suite with furnished terrace, the views over to Appledore & sun sets were amazing, a relaxing break well worth the lengthy journey, hope to return very soon.

Just returned from a weekend spent at this wonderful hotel. Our second visit over the past two years. Sea view room was wonderful, bright pristine and spacious, tea making facilities, toiletries in the bathroom, fluffy towels, sun loungers with cushions for the balcony where you can relax and watch the world go round overlooking a wonderful view of the sea and Appledore. The ladies on the reception greeted us in a very friendly manner and were very helpful. All of the staff are smart ,professional and friendly without going over the top, especially the lady, sorry cant remember your name who served us in the bar on Sunday evening. The food was excellent, five star enhanced by five star waiter/waitress service. Everyone goes to great length to make your stay enjoyable and comfortable. We highly rate this family run hotel, we stay in a lot of five star hotels over the country especially in London, but this hotel is far the best and our most favourite. If you want to get a way from it all you must book. We have re-booked for later on this year and can't wait to return. Mr Woollaway thanks for providing us with such a superb hotel.

Room Tip: Sea facing if you want a good view.

We had lunch here and found the food to be very nice. Staff were helpful and smart. They view from the outdoor terrace across the water to Appledore is beautiful. The drinks are a little expensive however more than worth paying for given every thing else.

We liked this hotel. The Commodore is a family business and not part of a big impersonal chain. This meant that staff were friendly and made you feel they wanted you to have an enjoyable time with them. We were offered a pot of tea in our room on arrival and this was much appreciated. The only downside was that it could sometimes be difficult to find someone on reception. However, this was only a minor irritation and reception staff were always pleasant and helpful.
The evening meal was excellent as was the breakfast. I really appreciated being able to get away from the standard cooked breakfast as they included other items such as omelettes. It was delicious too.
We had a room at the back of the hotel which was spacious and comfortable. The decor in our room was a little dated but that only added to the feeling that you were somewhere unique and not bog standard. There is a bright, comfortable residents lounge available. The sea facing rooms with balconies or patios would be amazing as there is a great view and lots of activity.
We would happily return.

Room Tip: sea facing

I went to North Devon with my wife, sister and niece and manged to get 3 nights in the Commodore and from my first meeting with Pat the receptionist until the time we left three days later we could not have wished for better service, food or room.
The staff were superb bending over backwards to our every need yet going about their work without fuss or fluster. The breakfasts were excellent served to your table and the evening dinner menu was varied and top notch and the wine very good value. The rooms were pristine and though my sister and niece had a rear view room it was still very light and airy. The views from our seaview room were superb.
I rely on other opinions on trip advisor when I book hotels and therefore always try to give a measured opinion for my comments and having stayed in many hotels both on business and for holidays in this country and abroad I rate this hotel overall as one of the top three I have stayed in,

Room Tip: Room 5 is a cracker
