Only the one night but very agreeable stay. Friendly welcome on arrival; tea and biscuits served in the residents lounge. The rooms fine with quite spectacular views with a terrace area (ok, it was October, but in the summer would be fantastic).

Dinner and breakfast included in the rate. Both were very good. The service could not have been better.

One thing though not seen in a long time: the bathroom in one of the rooms had carpet; just feels a little bit unclean and musty. However, a minor point and would certainly stay here again.

Room Tip: Front rooms worth the extra (rear rooms smaller, no terrance, overlook the carpark and a flat roof)

Our second short break stay here in 5 months as we couldn't wait to return!
This time we paid extra for the estuary view, well worth it even at this time of year.
Ideal location for some stunning autumn walks. The Tarka Trail is easy walking but there are also some more testing walks nearby.
The Hotel, once again, did not disappoint. Couldn't fault it in any way.Food, cleanliness, service and all round hospitality. Would recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a quiet relaxing break. I believe it is for adults and older children only, but please check this if it is important to you.

Room Tip: Worth paying the bit extra for a view of the estuary.

The location is very good, just across the road from a lovely beach with views over the Torridge to Appledore the other side. There is a frequent bus service between Barnstaple and Bideford, which means getting there and going on excursions is do-able without a car.

The hospitality was excellent, friendly greeting, help with bags, a clean, comfortable room with sea views, all meals were excellent, with a very good balance between simpler and more adventurous items, to cater for all tastes, and service in the restaurant and bar efficient and friendly.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are a bit more but worth it.

Just returned from a two night stay at this lovely hotel. The service and comfort of the rooms were first class. We had a sea view room with large balcony and view over to Appledore. Can't fault anything with this hotel. We were there to attend a family funeral and the catering for this event was excellent, with a lovely buffet. I was born in Barnstaple but now live in the North West and we were very impressed with how Instow has not been commercialised and the lovely old houses have been sympathectically resorted in keeping with the history of the area. There are a few good places to go for a drink and a meal and the walk along the front is very pretty. We did not get much time to explore the area, other than to go over to Appledore, which also has been kept in keeping the history of the area. Westward Ho where I spend many childhoold holidays has been spoilt by overdevelopment and was very dissappointing. Can highly recommend this hotel and hope to go back one day to walk along the coastal paths. The official rating is 3* but it is definitely 4* standard.

Room Tip: Room with a sea view

We have stayed at the Commodore at least 10 times in the past 6 years and to say it gets better is an understatement. The chef has reached new heights and the menu is intelligently devised to cater for all tastes. Father and son who run the Commodore compliment each other and add to the smooth running of this very understated hotel. It deserves 5 stars and I can guarantee that once you stay here you will want to return again and again.

Room Tip: Ask for a front facing room
