“Best place to stay in this part of Devon”
Reviewed August 24, 2010

This hotel surpassed my expectations.

Dinner was an enjoyable experience as the food was very tasty and the dining rooms are quite elegant.

The hotel staff were very friendly and accommodating. However, due to the hotel's remote location, they must find it difficult to recruit experienced staff as the service was hit or miss.

We had a master suite which was spacious and had lovely views. A big drawback with these rooms is that they have a connecting door through to the next suite. They also tend to be used for families with young (noisy) children - everything can be heard through the door. The bathrooms are seriously in need of updating - circa 1990! Housekeeping could be better, there were lots of dead flies in the canopy of the four poster bed and they were very stingy with clean towels and toiletries.

Despite the above mentioned niggles, this hotel does have a certain charm factor to it and we found it very laid back and relaxing.

Tip: Good for a short stay.

We stayed for one night. We arrived and the room was wonderful. The food was excellent and the service from all the staff was professional and friendly.
The location was a little out of the way but this added to it's charm.
It would be a wonderful wedding experience a very special place for a special day. We were traveling around the South West and it provided a lovely place to rejuvenate ourselves.
Well done to all the staff we will be staying again and trying the other hotels in this group.

We Celebrated our 33rd Wedding Aniversary (6/8/10) here, staying in the Primrose Suite, it really was a most enjoyable week-end, nothing was too much trouble for any member of staff and the chef was very obliging, if it was not on the menu you only had to ask and if he had it he would cook it for you, or as in our case order in for the following nights evening meal. the feeling from walking in to leaving was one of being looked after, with people who actually like their jobs, a rarity in most Hotels these days.
so we would like to thank all the staff for making our stay so enjoyable and hope one day to return perhaps for a little longer next time

Stayed for just the one night, beautiful room, comfy bed. Quiet surroundings absolutely perfect for weddings. The only slightly down side was the breakfast. The cereals/fruit needed restocking and could have done with more selection and we had tinned mushrooms which seemed a shame. Overall very relaxing.

I stayed at this hotel as my friend got married locally and had the reception & evening here. We all stayed at the hotel overnight as due to the location, it was too far to get home that evening.

Although I do not mind paying for elegance and the natural beauty surrounding this property, I do think that the room rate is still a bit dear (£150 a night for the room I stayed in) which was absolutely stunning, but took a trek up and down stairs to get to. I am a firm believer in "you get what you pay for", however there were a few things I would've expected having paid £150/night...

1. No lifts or elevators at the hotel. One of our party was in a wheelchair and it was a mission trying to get up/down stairs, especially as some of the staircases were quite narrow. Even from the car park to the hotel reception, the only main route was down steps, so everyone had to pull up outside the hotel to drop bags, etc. and then drive back to the car park to park.
2. Breakfast was less than expected. Although there was a variety of fruit and cereals on offer as well as cooked breakfast, the cooked breakfast was very small (in portion size) and I ended up eating more toast than I normally do to satisfy my hunger.
3. More variety in the bar. The hotel bar only offered 3 varieties of beer (Stella, Becks, & one other) and the prices were too expensive. I ordered a Malibu & coke, and an orange juice which cost £6.50! I think these prices clearly take advantage of those wanting a drink as there are no nearby pubs. But when paying £150/night, you'd expect a better bar rate when paying for drinks

Otherwise, the hotel was wonderful, had a really good sleep and the room was beautiful and had everything you would need from a decent hotel room. The food during the wedding (lunch & evening buffet) was superb and everyone loved it- most went back for seconds. The staff were friendly and very accommodating, although lack of communication at some times, everyone was very helpful.

We have just had our Daughters wedding here at Buckland Tout Saints, and what a fabulous time was had by all. From the moment we arrived we were all looked after so well. The food was beautifully presented and tasted great too. Our guests haven't stopped talking about how wonderful the hotel was. This really is a very special hotel, with beautiful decor and a wonderful ambiance.

-First impression- lovely to drive around the corner and see the stone building emerge out of the well-kept grounds
- Room was excellent- nicely decorated, nice bathroom with tub, huge bed, sofa and chair
- Common areas were well-proportioned and welcoming, very classy/sophisticated
- All meals were delicious with very high quality ingredients; dining room intimate only approx ten tables
- Service was impeccable. Staff were friendly but discreet; they remembered who we were, greeted us and asked how our day was, gave directions, lent us wellington boots, laundered a pair of muddy trousers without charge, sorted out a taxi on very short notice when we otherwise would have missed a train and even extended breakfast and checkout times to accommodate guests like ourselves who forgot to turn their clocks back.
-Location pretty remote but this is what we were looking for- you could literally stay at the hotel for a weekend and just go on short walks in the vicinity; also Totnes and Dartmouth and Kingsbridge close by.
- Ideal for a relaxing, romantic weekend away.
