“Relaxing Elegance in the South Hams”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

The property is beautifully and peacefully situated in the South Hams, near Kingsbridge and within easy reach of many attractive villages, towns and beaches. As others have indicated, the approach to the property is not easy but it is definitely worth the effort. The staff are extremely friendly and the food and service are excellent. We have stayed here twice and will most certainly go back. Last year's "superior" room was first class, large with a huge bathroom and a comfortable sitting area. We upgraded this year to a suite - separate sitting room including a dining table and sofa, large bedroom with a four-poster bed and two bathrooms, one with a double shower. The linen and towels were spotless and the toiletries carefully selected for their quality. The decor, furnishings and fittings throughout are entirely in keeping with the property. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Ask about the availability of upgrades. These will be chargeable but could represent excellent value...

We recently had a one night's stay at this elegant William and Mary mansion, deep in the South Hams. The approach is down a very narrow Devon lane so drive carefully. The hotel's drive, rightly, has warnings of pot holes but don't let this put you off. We had a most magnificent bedroom, more than double the size of most hotels and a sitting room not much smaller. A huge bed rendered a very good night's sleep. Dinner, was delightful in the magnificent panelled dining room and was followed next morning by a good breakfast. The staff were helpful and professional. The grounds have great potential but appeared rather neglected, I'd love to get to work on their lawns!

Spent very pleasant three days, celebrating my wife's birthday. Everything we had hoped for. Lovely position, super room, good food, and excellent service from friendly staff. Need to concentrate on narrow country lane approaches, but well worth it when you arrive. We will certainly return.

Room Tip: No lift, so ground or first floor, if you are not too good on stairs.

My husband and I were fortunate enough to stay at Buckland Tout-Saints in September with a group of friends.
We loved it!
The staff were amazing....so friendly and helpful. A special thanks to Helen and to my favourite waiter, Bruno.
The food was delicious - our compliments to the chef.
We would love to return one day and book one of the suites next time.

Booked two night B&B. A week before hotel offered a third night including dinner at rate cheaper than B&B. They upgraded room - Petunia, which was a plus. Although on side of hotel, spacious, but anyone with bad knees will struggle to manage all of the stairs.
Because hotel is in the country we ate in restaurant each night. Most guests only ate in once, going to Kingsbridge on other nights. Hotel should ask Why?
Quality of food was good, but menu did not change.
Service was mixed. On first night a less experienced team, who whilst very active did not give confidence of being in control of dining room especially as it was the busiest night of our stay. Split dining room does not help. Immediately a task was performed they would rush back to the kitchen for the next delivery, no looking around the dining room to see what needed clearing etc. Getting wine/water topped up could require long term planning. At breakfast those requesting sauce would wait several minutes for it to arrive from the kitchen, whilst their food went cold. On the last morning the extras were on a side table in the dining room. Much more efficient. Issue is one of training and management.
Next night moe experienced staff, calmer and more in control, but with fewer customers to serve. On night three, only three tables booked out of nine couples staying.
Hotel appears to offer a wide range of prices and packages, perhaps to wide. Appreciate they are trying to maximise income, but by not ensuring majority of guests eat in hotel on all nights of their stay the hotel is losing out on extras and carries the cost of staff being underused. A more consistent approach to half board for 2/3 night stays might be be sensible.
I had wanted to stay here for some time. Enjoyed, but would I stay again - maybe/maybe not.

Room Tip: Try to upgrade room, but have a cut off price threshold.

Amazing secret escape. Couldn't wait to go back. The only slight disappointment was the unavailability of our previous room-Gardenia! Well pleased with Petunia, though. Plenty of space, clean, and the enthusiastic staff couldn't do enough for us. A couple of very minor hiccups, but we are all human. Dining experience was almost perfect and the breakfast (The Buckland Grill) was to die for!! Will certainly return.

Room Tip: It's staying a secret, sorry!!
