“Disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2013

We booked a supposed bargain through the 'Secret Escapes' website. The offer was for a standard room (with upgrade to 'superior' - subject to availability) with a cream tea and bottle of bubbly included. All for £89 which is roughly half the regular price. A bargain on paper.
The hotel was splendid and the staff friendly and attentive.
However on arrival it came as no surprise that the the 'superior' rooms weren't available. We could see that one coming a mile off! What we weren't expecting was to be shoved up into an attic bedroom with small windows. Because the en-suite bathroom wasn't big enough to accommodate the sink - it resided in the corner of the bedroom instead. So after using the toilet you had to come into the bedroom to wash your hands. Rather bizarre.
The bath incorporated a hand-held shower attachment which made showering somewhat difficult.
But the biggest problem was the overpowering temperature. It was a warm summer's afternoon and there were hot pipes running around the edge of the bedroom. The heat was unbearable. I asked at reception for the heat to be turned off - but I was advised that it was hot water for the upstairs rooms and this wasn't possible. Nor was a change of room. I was given an electric fan and advised that "when the sun set - it would be cooler!" So having been driven from our room, we decided to try the restaurant. It came with excellent recommendations. The set-price dinner menu of 2 courses for £28 (or 3 for £35) consisted of 3 choices of starters/mains/desserts. It was disappointing that the salmon had 'run out' which limited the choice of mains to 2 options. We decided to eat in the nearby town of Kingsbridge instead and had a fabulous meal for half the price.
As I said earlier, the building was very impressive and the staff excellent. But I can't shake the feeling that because I'd taken advantage of a 'special deal' - that I'd been shunted into one of the 'overflow' rooms up in the roof.
I would have been most unhappy to have been charged £170 for the room. I wasn't happy at half that price.
So anybody taking advantage of a 'special deal'.....BEWARE!

Room Tip: Be aware that if you are paying full price and pull up in a porsche outside the front door - you'...

The hotel is situated down some very narrow lanes but the worst bit is the entrance driveway which needs repairing since my car was grounded both entering and leaving the hotel . The room in the hotel was spacious and clean and the staff were friendly and helpful . We dined in on one night and thought that the food lacked imagination for the price charged . Breakfast on both mornings were very good with an adequate choice .

Room Tip: All rooms have character

Once you have found it - no easy task! - Buckland Tout-Sands Hotel is marvelous. The kind of place the "colour suplements" tempt us with. Magical location, friendly courteous staff, excellent food. What more could you ask for?

Room Tip: Avoid attic rooms - very hot in warm weather

We travelled around south Devon looking for the perfect location for our wedding with enough accommodation for travelling family. When we went to view the hotel, from the second we arrived the staff on reception were always so friendly and from then on we felt so welcome on every visit. The service is a very high standard. It was the perfect peaceful location for a private wedding with a beautiful garden and water fountain. We had exclusive use of the hotel and allocated family to the rooms.
The superior rooms were very spacious. The rooms on the third floor had modern decor and all so different. All the rooms had the usual facilities. The only downside to this hotel is the access for elderly or disabled. The stairs to the second floor are manageable for the superior rooms, but it is a struggle to the third floor as there is no lift. Also most of the showers were over a bath in the Superiors.
The food was beautiful and presented very well. The price for extra beds or the sofa bed to be made up in a room was ridiculous considering the amount we paid for the whole hotel and the rooms
already.
The reception staff made us feel at home on our wedding weekend and all our family and friends said how perfect the weekend went. We had a BBQ on the Friday night with all our guests, Got married on the Saturday and checked out after another delicious breakfast on Sunday.
The Sun shone the whole weekend and what a beautiful place it is in the sunshine.
This was a bonus to a perfect weekend at Buckland. Thank you for a beautiful wedding and hotel venue.

Location is very peaceful and has lovely views. Avoid if you are uncomfortable driving along single lanes with room for one vehicle only.

We stayed in an attic room which was well decorated but unsuitable for anyone over 6ft tall and only a hand held shower in the bathroom meant that showers had to be conducted sitting in the bath.

The weather was stifling and trying to sleep at night extremely uncomfortable. We asked for a fan but was told they had all been allocated! You would think that they would have realised the intensity of the heat and how uncomfortable it would be for guests especially as there is a hot water pipe that runs through the room and we later overheard a member of staff telling another guest how hot the hotel gets!

We did manage to get a fan from them a day later but it was broken although I managed to repair it (no charge levied by me!!).

The staff were pleasant but there seemed a lack of management and service was slow. At breakfast you had one member of staff responsible for taking the tea and toast order and then you had to wait for another to take your breakfast order. Why isn't one person responsible for taking both?? This meant you had to wait for when, as it appeared, convenient for them and not the guest.

When we ordered food and drinks outside you had to wait a while for someone to attend and at times you felt you had to make the point to someone inside of where you were and that service would be required!

These may seem niggly points to make but it affected the experience of our stay and I would ask that they get the approach road to the hotel front levelled out as it damaged the underside of my vehicle and if I was fortunate to drive something more exotic and low level I wouldn't have an underside following my stay!!

Plus Points:

Location

Views

Pleasant Staff

Negatives:

Slow Service

Facilities - Lack of availability of fans in hot weather / pillows were flat and unsupportive / upper floor levels could be difficult for elderly or infirm to access so advise the hotel in advance if this will be a problem.

Evening dining expensive and average quality

Poor access road can damage underside of vehicles due to camber. OK if you are driving a 4x4 type vehicle.

Room Tip: Avoid Top Floor if Weather is Hot Peaceful and scenic outlook

We only one had one night at this hotel a) we were visiting friends for dinner and b) the hotel was fully booked which was a pity. It's a wonderful old William & Mary house with lots of history and charming rooms, hidden down a series of tiny lanes just miles from the coast. On seeing my walking stick the staff switched our room to one more accessible. We were early but desperate to watch the Wimbledon final and so they let us in to the room while two lovely ladies tidied around us! We thought it showed flexibility! They were also very happy to bring us delicious fresh sandwiches as part of their (limited but 24 hour) room service. The room was very nice - a really comfy bed, beautiful silk curtains and headboard, and a good bathroom. We missed out on dinner as we were out but had a good breakfast after a good night's sleep. Actually I didn't have a full breakfast, just fruit from the buffet and toast, but my husband had pretty much everything freshly cooked which he said was very good. I had a coffee in one of the sitting rooms, while my husband walked the dog around the gardens (very happy to accept dogs and even cooked the 3 that were staying, a sausage each!) which I did note they charged me £3.50 for - a little mean as we'd paid for breakfast but I hadn't really had one. Very good value and unsurprisingly therefore fully booked. The staff are lovely and friendly!
