We booked a supposed bargain through the 'Secret Escapes' website. The offer was for a standard room (with upgrade to 'superior' - subject to availability) with a cream tea and bottle of bubbly included. All for £89 which is roughly half the regular price. A bargain on paper.
The hotel was splendid and the staff friendly and attentive.
However on arrival it came as no surprise that the the 'superior' rooms weren't available. We could see that one coming a mile off! What we weren't expecting was to be shoved up into an attic bedroom with small windows. Because the en-suite bathroom wasn't big enough to accommodate the sink - it resided in the corner of the bedroom instead. So after using the toilet you had to come into the bedroom to wash your hands. Rather bizarre.
The bath incorporated a hand-held shower attachment which made showering somewhat difficult.
But the biggest problem was the overpowering temperature. It was a warm summer's afternoon and there were hot pipes running around the edge of the bedroom. The heat was unbearable. I asked at reception for the heat to be turned off - but I was advised that it was hot water for the upstairs rooms and this wasn't possible. Nor was a change of room. I was given an electric fan and advised that "when the sun set - it would be cooler!" So having been driven from our room, we decided to try the restaurant. It came with excellent recommendations. The set-price dinner menu of 2 courses for £28 (or 3 for £35) consisted of 3 choices of starters/mains/desserts. It was disappointing that the salmon had 'run out' which limited the choice of mains to 2 options. We decided to eat in the nearby town of Kingsbridge instead and had a fabulous meal for half the price.
As I said earlier, the building was very impressive and the staff excellent. But I can't shake the feeling that because I'd taken advantage of a 'special deal' - that I'd been shunted into one of the 'overflow' rooms up in the roof.
I would have been most unhappy to have been charged £170 for the room. I wasn't happy at half that price.
So anybody taking advantage of a 'special deal'.....BEWARE!
