“Stunning hotel with a warm welcome”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

We stayed at Buckland for a friends wedding in December and had an amazing time!

The hotel is stunning and is truly in the middle of nowhere, making it as relaxed as it could be.
There is nothing worse then going into the hotel gardens for a drink and hearing a motorway in the background.

As for the staff I could not fault them at all, from the second we stepped through the door to check in, until we left they where friendly and attentive.

i would recommend this hotel to anyone!

We've just returned home from a two night stay & New Year Party at the hotel with our friends from Bournemouth, we stayed in the classic rooms.
The welcome was pleasant and we were shown to our rooms on the top floor which were quiet and a little quirky in relation to the layout. The rooms were clean and well decorated with comfortable beds although the television had very limited TV channels (no satellite). The en-suite although functional had a dated basin & w.c and only a hand held shower in the bath, this is due to the fact that the ceiling is low so take care getting in and out of the bath if you're over 6' tall. It would also be an idea for staff to let customers know these details when booking (good job we're all short). Quality complimentary products supplied but let down by the cheap cotton buds, maybe a few extra pounds spent would make the difference.
The hotel decor features throughout the hotel are original and a real talking point.
The food throughout the stay has been exceptional, imaginative, flavoured and varied as has the choice of wines although they had run dry of our first two choices following the New Year Party.
The front of house staff were excellent but it would be an idea to ensure the waiting staff ask questions of the customer before they serve the orders as there were a few minor errors with the orders.
The New Years eve celebrations were well organised, the staff played a great role in ensuring the guests were having a good time and the presentation, detail and quality of the table decorations certainly gave the party a great start. The band (The Penguins) were very good and played a varied list of favourites from the past several decades ensuring guests of all ages got up and danced. The firework display was nicely co-ordinated and not overstated.
We've been to this hotel a few times and it's still a favourite so we're sure to return and can highly recommend the New Year Party, we missed it the previous year so we'd suggest you book soon.

Room Tip: If you can pay a little extra for the larger rooms.

i returned yesterday from a wedding held at this amazing venue, i was captivated by the drive into the grounds, taking in the views and to then be met by such a splendid house was simply lovely. im sure in the sunshine this house stands out, but somehow in the full festive spirit, it felt so homely with the fires lit and christmas trees dotted about everywhere. we stayed in the Begonia room which was very tastefully decorated. As there were alot of family staying also, I took advantage and got to have a good look in some of the other rooms, they really have kept the feel of the place but put a lot of boutique style touches in. i would love to return one day as it really was a picture postcard. well done to all the staff, everyone was so friendly and couldnt do enough to help, you have got this so right!!

Room Tip: i would probably say first floor rooms were better positioned especially if you were staying & h...

Hidden away some 2 miles from Kingsbridge in Devon, this is a super find for a friendly efficient small hotel set in a hidden location but with superb views. The (superior) rooms are exceptional, and the two dining rooms are in totally different settings. The lounge and seperate bar are cosy, the bar with leather old fashioned arm chairs. The food is modern but excellent. A special mention for the staff everyone from the manager down makingevery effort to ensure a good stay, and all very friendly. No hesitation on recommending.

We celebrated our wedding anniversary staying here for 2 nights in October. We had an extremely enjoyable stay.

I can't fault the hotel. Our room was lovely - lavender - though up quite few stairs. However the staff offered to take up our bags. The bathroom was quite compact and only had a shower mixer tap which you had to hold - but there was plenty of hot water.

The dinners and breakfasts in the hotel restaurant were excellent. The staff were very attentive and always checked everything was OK - however we were not always convinced that they listened to or were concerned about your answer. Once, we just said nothing and the young waiter still smiled and walked away. Like a previous reviewer we also had wine left in our bottle that they did not refill our glasses with, and it had disappeared by the next night!

A beautiful location, once you find it, an elegant property and good staff. All you need for a great stay. I would love to return.

If you are looking for a hotel to treat yourself to a relaxing break in South Devon, then look no further. We arrived on a dark, wet evening in November after a long drive down narrow country lanes, but on reaching the hotel we were immediately made very welcome. Our room was spacious and well appointed with beautiful views over unspoilt countryside. The restaurant is a beautiful, candlelit room and complimented the delicious food. The lounge, with its log fire, was perfect for pre dinner drinks and coffee. We are looking forward to a return visit next Spring.
