We were celebrating our ruby wedding. We booked 10 rooms here. We had asked friends to join us for the weekend. Most of the rooms were ok.Our own room had a big bay window with sea view, the sofa was a bit "tired" but everything else was acceptable.
The food choice was excellent, the staff could not have been more helpful.......
You get what you pay for, and in view of it being bank holiday weekend the price we paid for what we got was excellent.......

We had our first experience of Shearings on this 5 day break. We had a standard twin and a standard double room all with sea view. The stunning views are worth the extra cost, as you look out over the gardens to the water. Our double room must have been a free upgrade as it was huge with lots of windows and had a sofa as well as armchairs. 2 nights of blissful peace.

Sadly on the 3rd evening we realized that as we were over the bar, we had to endure the extremely loud entertainment [singer] coming through the floor from 845pm to 11pm. It was not worth moving at this stage as we only had one more night to go. The music was so loud that we could not watch the TV. On evening 4 we escaped to the tranquil surroundings of the Royal Beacon Hotel bar around the corner.

Our room was lovely although the bathroom was a bit tired with an old stained shower curtain and shower mat and a small leak from somewhere under the bath. The twin room was much smaller but had modern decor and duvets. The double was more floral in decor with sheets and blanket. The twin room received minimal/non-existent maid service although the double room did better.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. Save for the maid service everyone else was efficient. The food was generally good with enough choices. Small complaint that sometimes plates cold and food tepid, but this improved dramatically on Day 3 when a new chef took over. You will not starve here as both breakfast and dinner are hearty.

We thought the drinks were moderately priced for a hotel, but we are used to London pub prices.

Would we use Shearings again? Probably yes, if we were with older members in group. We were in the youngest 1% of the guests, but we still enjoyed ourselves. Most guests seemed to be in their 70s.

Much of the travel time is devoted to breaks along the way. It may be better to travel independently and to book the hotel in the normal way. Exmouth BR is only 5 minutes easy walk away for trains to Exeter, Torquay, Teignmouth etc. Sidmouth is a lovely place to visit. The train travels up the River Exe, which has great scenery. Exeter is good for shopping.

For our weekend break we chose the Imperial because we were celebrating our third wedding anniversary. We cannot fault the staff, helpful, friendly and approachable. We stayed with our 2 year old daughter and here the staff were exceptional, they provided milk for her when we asked, and were concerned when she decided to have a 'terrible twos tantrum'. We were provided with a high chair, travel cot and at breakfast on the second day an extra teaspoon for our daughters breakfast. The decor of the bar area, dining room and reception were modern and sylish. Where I think our experience was let down was our room. We did not stay in one of the refurbished rooms and I think this may make the difference. The black wall in the bedroom did not feel relaxing and the room felt extremely dated (by comparision to the pubic areas). The room was 'clean' however everywhere needed a deep clean (tops of holders, picture frames). The bed was a little lumpy also. Where the staff (and breakfast) made it a pleasurable stay and would be the basis of a recommendation from us for a short stay, a refurbishment to the rest of the undeveloped rooms has the potential to make this average hotel, very nice indeed.

Having stayed at Shearings hotels in the past, we thought that as this was a Coast & Country Hotel it would have been better. The menu was the same as Shearings and the food very good standard. Especially breakfast, overcooked eggs, small dried up bacon. Our room was very basic, bathroom outdated, the dining area was nice, but the bar service virtually non existent. Drinks expensive, entertainment only one night, but most guests didn't see it through to the end. Not sure why we paid more for less. Should have booked a basic shearings package and saved some money.

We arrived at the hotel late afternoon and were welcomed by the assistant manager as soon as our Shearing's Grand Tourer coach pulled up. The hotel is on the front and has lovely gardens.
Check in was quick and our cases were delivered to our room shortly after. We were impressed with our room which appeared to have been recently refurbished, much improved on the usual Shearing's "tired" green and orange furnishings. We booked a sea-view which was just that. First impressions of the room were good but the beds were not very comfortable, the springs pinged every time you moved, and the pillows, although there were 2 each, were very flat. The bathroom was a reasonable size and very clean having been recently refurbished.
The bar and restaurant were nicely decorated and furnished. The food in the restaurant was ok with a reasonable choice for both breakfast and dinner. While you wouldn't expect a gourmet experience, you can have a full English breakfast which will set you up for the day, and a good 3-course dinner followed by coffee. The service in the restaurant was good on the whole, although a couple of nights no-one asked us what we would like to drink. Other than that, all the staff were very pleasant and helpful.
All things considered this hotel is very good value for money.
