When I arrived at the hotel I was greeted with the smell of cooking in the reception area - not pleasant. The receptionist was very helpful and I had a room with stunning views overlooking the estuary but unfortunately it was very dated. The bathroom was carpeted and did not look hygenic, the shower leaked and it was not possible to stop the carpet getting wet. The breakfast was good perhaps a bigger selection of fresh fruit would improve it but the evening meals in the Italian restaurant was very poor. The portions were huge but not good quality. I would not use this hotel again.

Good afternoon,

Many thanks for your review on Trip Advisor.

We have looked closely at your comments and taken everything on board. Indeed we do have a couple of rooms that still have carpet in the bathroom - we have found that some customers do like this, some do not. Over the next couple of months a few remaining bathrooms are to be updated.

With regards to the updating we have at least 32" flat screen TVs in every room and the hotel is this year celebrating its 200th birthday. Our "dated" look is important to our heritage but if you would like a more modern room this is possible by request.

I apologise for a faulty shower, I have instructed our maintenance man to inspect any shower for any problems, however, if ever there are any problems we look to resolve them immediately.

The Italian restaurant in the cellars is the most popular restaurant in Exmouth. The quality I can assure you is there - all of our produce is fresh and sourced from various parks in Italy.

If you would like to discuss anything further please phone the hotel on 01392 823823

Kind regards
Royal Beacon Hotel

I am not a fan of seaside hotels, I have always found them to be drab, dingy and overpriced. I was pleasantly proved wrong when we stayed at the Royal Beacon however.

My fiance had an engagement with work in Exmouth, for which she was able to book the hotel for second time, having been impressed with it previously; hence I had an afternoon to myself to explore the hotel and area. It was apparent to me that every room looks out over the sea; our room had a lovely window seat, which was handy to sit and watch the sea down below, the room was also equipped with freeview and free wireless internet which was excellent.

The location is good for both the seafront and the centre of town, and it's elevated position gives you some stunning views. We ate in the Italian restaurant in the basement, the food was very good; however I booked a table the day before and they seemed to have no record of it! Luckily they did squeeze us in, but I would recommend booking as it was packed (this was a Friday night). There were a lot of non-hotel customers which suggests that it has a good reputation.

This is an excellent seaside hotel which is up with the times, offering a digital tv service and a good wireless network for travellers with those needs. Two things did let it down however. Firstly, there was a lot of noise from adjoining rooms when people were returning from nights out fairly late. This did wake us up as no door seems to shut quietly!

The second slight let down was the service at breakfast in the morning; they were either short staffed or haven't got the right number of people to deal with breakfast - despite it being an excellent breakfast, it was a slow process being seated, and ordering our food.

We recently stayed at the Royal Beacon for a two night break. It was a last minute booking so all the front facing rooms had gone but we had a side room which still had a lovely sea view. The room was spacious and clean with a huge flat screen TV! The room also had a large electric fan which is a really good idea for hot evenings.
The wall mounted hairdrier in the bathroom was a little strange tho!
We were in a room above the lounge bar & the noise carried easily, on one of the nights voices could still be heard after one o'clock in the morning, making it difficult to sleep.
The reception staff were all polite and always happy to help with any queries. Nice breakfast, but maybe they could add a vegetarian option onto the cooked menu.
We would be more than happy to stay there again but maybe try a different room.

Marvellous hotel close to the town centre and with stunning views over the sea and the Estuary with Dawlish Warren in the distance. Room 309 was spacious with the largest flat screen TV I have seen in any hotel room, must have been 32 inch!! Staff were lovely, friendly and helpful. The hotel was on the hot side as most are these days it seems. Beware of opening windows though, there was a warning that the seagulls like the rooms too! Room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Breakfast was lovely and plentiful.
There is a small car park at the side of the hotel which only takes about 6 cars but it is easier to use the on-street parking nearby.
Try Capels fish and chip restaurant near the railway station on Imperial Road - really good quality and value.

Stayed for 2 nights in September 08, and although the weather could of been better it would of been hard for the hotel to be any nicer. The view from our front facing bedroom was absolutely breathtaking. I hadn't realsied how beautiful the Devon Coastline was. The hotel doesn't have a fitness centre or a pool but who needed it, there was 2 mile long sandy beach, just yards from the front door. The staff were great, and always made us feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel has 2 restaurants, although we only ate in the Italian in the cellers, what wonderful food, character and atmosphere!! Will definitely be returning!!

Lovely hotel . We had a huge room on the third floor with a gorgeous panaramic sea view , for which there was a supplement of only £10. Only there for one night , a Saturday and were grateful that we had a good hotel as we found Exmouth disappointing . Lots of work going on around the harbour but distinct lack of any good restaurants & bars . On the subject of food this is the only reason the hotel didnt get 5 stars . We ate in the Italian restaurant below the hotel and both found the food very bland and virtually tasteless . We both ordered different dishes but both tasted the same !! However this did not distract from our enjoyment of the hotel . Lovely bar , small car park , we actually had to park about 200 yards away but this was not an issue and despite our disappointment of dinner the breakfast was very good . Would definitely recommend the hotel but maybe not Exmouth !

The Royal Beacon bills itself as Exmouth's premier hotel. I have to say the website is not the most sophisticated on the www. However, as the price I paid was only £10 above what I could have paid for a bog-standard B&B I decided to give it a try. What a pleasant surprise. Spotlessly clean room, great restaurant (Donato's) very good staff. Would definitely stay again.
