We have now become, almost, regulars at the Beacon Vaults. We probably go there about once a month. Very good home cooked food - nothing 'pinged' in sight. This time we tried two of the variations from the Fabulous Baker Brothers Visit - the Exmouth Egg - a crab meat and salmon fish cake topped off with a poached egg followed by the Smugglers Pie. Both were perfectly cooked. The poached egg on top of the crab/salmon cake made a much lighter starter than the boiled egg version of the TV show. You could really taste the fresh crab and salmon. The Smugglers Pie was full of perfectly tender beef in a rich sauce, in a light homemade pastry case. The cider mash piped on top provided a freshness making the meal hearty but not heavy. Followed by cafetier coffee this was an excellent way to celebrate my birthday with my husband. A large group was nearby, but we had a lovely table near the window and full attention from Lynne and the gang so we did not feel sidelined at all. The pub side is friendly and comfy serving a decent cider and a real ale which is all we ask for.

Hard to know where to start! Great atmosphere, quirky environment, and fabulous hosts! We were there the day after they had been closed for a celebration to mark their featuring on TV, and wondered whether we had picked a good day. It was great! An excellent meal with our hosts in fine form considering the previous evening! First rate food, and excellent value for money. Strongly recommended, wise to book.

This was a Mother's Day surprise; sadly, not a good one.

We all had the carvery. The 'roast' potatoes were very anaemic looking, soft and soggy like overdone boiled spuds. The veg were on the soft side; a matter of taste I guess. Oddly there was no green veg.

The crumble on the apple crumble was just crushed ginger biscuits dominating bland apple underneath.

It's a pleasant dining room environment but I fear the decorators may have stayed on to do the cooking.

The biggest surprise was the loud behaviour of the chef(owner?). He was very intrusive and shouting across the room to people he knew. Great for them perhaps but for anyone else? Not a pleasant experience.

We chose to go here on the back of tripadvisor comments. I have to say I'll be very sceptical of these in future. I don't normally do reviews but have been moved to do so after this.

I can't say any of us want to go back.

Hi exemp P
sorry you didn't enjoy your meal here at the Beacon Vaults.
just to clarify the 'crushed ginger biscuit' on the crumble is a homemade short bread and ginger biscuit crumb with a in this case pureed apple filling.
and yes I do get a little excited as a chef, only because of my passion for what I do. Except my apologies if this was not to your liking, we do table checks to ensure our guests are happy, and we had lots of happy repeat customers.

Cheers Andy the happy chef
