We have now become, almost, regulars at the Beacon Vaults. We probably go there about once a month. Very good home cooked food - nothing 'pinged' in sight. This time we tried two of the variations from the Fabulous Baker Brothers Visit - the Exmouth Egg - a crab meat and salmon fish cake topped off with a poached egg followed by the Smugglers Pie. Both were perfectly cooked. The poached egg on top of the crab/salmon cake made a much lighter starter than the boiled egg version of the TV show. You could really taste the fresh crab and salmon. The Smugglers Pie was full of perfectly tender beef in a rich sauce, in a light homemade pastry case. The cider mash piped on top provided a freshness making the meal hearty but not heavy. Followed by cafetier coffee this was an excellent way to celebrate my birthday with my husband. A large group was nearby, but we had a lovely table near the window and full attention from Lynne and the gang so we did not feel sidelined at all. The pub side is friendly and comfy serving a decent cider and a real ale which is all we ask for.
