Having been treated like a rabid dog at the sister hotel(the imperial) and practically told we weren't the type of people they wanted there by the receptionist. I was wary about trying the grand, what a difference 100 yds makes! The receptionist(who I later found out was the manager's wife) could not do enough to accommodate us even though we hadn't pre-booked. In fact she gave us an upgrade (for no extra) to a sea view room. The hotel itself was busy but not too busy that you couldn't sit and have a drink in comfort, because of the coach party bookings the evening meal was served at one sitting, but was most welcome after a long day in sweltering sunshine. ideally situated on the sea front, I would definitely recommend it for the more mature traveller, evening entertainment included bingo.The rooms were clean and spacious and the service was quick but attentive. I cannot praise the management and the hard working staff enough and although I am not yet ready for bingo I will definitely stay there again, even if it is only to say thank you .

Room Tip: tell reception what you want and if they have it available they will give it to you.

Great location on sea front and at quieter end of prom near to ferry to Starcross and tour boats, so very convenient, also a 5 minute walk into town. Hotel itself is old in parts, but newly decorated rooms are nice, very clean and fresh. Food is okay, not too many frills or extras but okay for a few days and menu has a good choice of dishes. Staff friendly. Rate it as good for location and value for money for a short break.

Room Tip: Upgrade to sea view is possible

We stayed at the Grand Hotel in Exmouth on June 20th 2014 for three nights and found the experience and glorious weather exhilarating! The hotel is situated just across the road from the glorious sea and we had wonderful views of the sea and River Exe estuary. The room on the ground floor was convenient and the standard half board including meals was very good and served efficiently by the restaurant staff. We have taken advantage of Bay and coast and country hotels on a self drive basis, as we believe they represent value for money, (you can reserve a car space for a £5 daily which is just in front of the main entrance) and always found that the staff are courteous, enthusiastic and always willing to help with a smile. The staff at the Grand Hotel were exceptional and as usual with this company always smartly dressed. Having stayed at many other hotels, I would suggest that they should find out what the formula is with regard to how Shearings motivate their staff. This is an ideal hotel for people to explore Exmouth and just walk along the beautiful esplanade. We shall stay there again.

THE UGLY!
We visited independently and stayed 4 nights, Monday to Friday on half board basis. When booking we upgraded to a sea view and duly paid £56 as read in reviews such rooms had been revamped.
As you HAVE to pay upfront this diminishes your options on arrival! Entering our room we found a largish brown mess on the ceiling with several other dirty marks there. There was a hole in the worst one. We checked out the shower which had black Mould in the grouting and looked messy, the edging of the shower was not sealed well and was dirty too. the web page comments are "all our rooms are charming". No. 46 was NOT!
We asked to change rooms and were refused unless we paid a further £100, another £50 per night. we refused! The explanation was that there had been Storm damage, to which we replied that it was their problem not ours
The next day was my birthday and we went out all day, having been very disappointed to wake up to the messy ceiling! On arrival back the maintenance team had been in and sorted the ceiling and the sealant around the shower, but the filthy grouting was left untouched. (one hour with bleach and a toothbrush would have sorted!

Food, is the BAD! Breakfasts were fine, wheras the evenng meals were Hit and Miss, more miss than hit! Starters and sweets were ok but the Main course was dreadful, good food messed up by cooking it, just not acceptable. For two consecutive evening small new potatoes in their skins were served, they looked the colour of kiwi fruits and ranged from squashy fibrous little unrecognisable balls, to larger potatoes, hard in the middle.Other pots were served as well but nothing at all was pleasant. In 4 nights I never had one meal that would rate a 3*. The Bar was VERY expensive for drinks, more so than normal upped bar prices, wine was a minimum of £16.99 a bottle up to £26.99. A Carafe of Red White Red or Ros'e House wine would have suited the Clientele better I believe. I Never saw wine being served in the dining room!

The GOOD!
Water was hot whenever you needed it, the bed was very comfortable with fresh snowy white linens and towels too, all sparkly clean and bright. The Hotels main rooms were smart and seating comfortable. The Hotel situation was excellent with the sea immediately opposite, the position was central and bus water taxi and trains very accessible provided guests were averagely mobile. It is about a 7 minute walk to the small town all on the flat, through pretty well kept Rose gardens and parks.Tea and Coffe making facilities in the room were good. The lift situation is better than reviewed. However on the morning we left we did get trapped in it for about 8 minutes in which time it was becoming very hot and claustrophobic being quite small, it would have been unbearable with the reccomended 4 persons in it.There are interesting and pleasant shops etc within walking distance and Exmouth is a truly lovely place to be.
The Hotel clientele was mostly senior citizens, we met some very pleasant people, all those we spoke to said they would NOT come back, and that the bedrooms were VERY shabby and the whole place left a lot to be desired.
The staff were all extremely helpful and most pleasant.

Mediocre entertainment was offered, Bingo and a quiz, followed by a Vocalist, which on the two evenings out of four were adequate, but the print off from the Hotels web page that I have, clearly promises Entertainment on every evening.

We do have photographs of the mess in our room .

Thank you for your ‘good, bad and ugly’ review.

Sorry to hear some aspects of your holiday were not to your liking.

All of our sea view rooms have been refurbished and have excellent sea views along our beautiful sea front. We did not refuse to change your room, at the time we did only have a superior sea view room available which was offered to you.

As you will be aware we have recently experienced the wettest winter here in the South West since records began and sadly this has caused some damage to our lovely building.
We have been in the process of repairing this damage. When you reported the water damage to the ceiling our maintenance man solved the issue the following morning. With regard to grouting, unfortunately over time grouting does discolour, and when this was reported, our maintenance man again tended to the issue. It was, however not mouldy – as we do pride ourselves with high levels of cleanliness, and our extremely hardworking members of housekeeping do their very best at maintaining these levels, as our previous reviews substantiate.

Sorry that the food was not to your taste. Unfortunately people’s preferences do differ when it comes to food, as you can see from the previous two reviews. Wine is available in the dining room – in a selection of different ways – by glass, by carafe or by bottle, whatever your preference these are available to all, at a range of different prices.

What we do offer here, we believe, is good value for money and as you mention our lovely position right opposite the sea is fantastic!

There was indeed a small problem with the lift, but as this is a brand new installation teething problems were to be expected. However, this matter was quickly resolved after speaking to the lift engineer.

We do have entertainment most evenings, however during the summer months we do operate a lighter entertainment package, as guests may prefer to be out enjoying the lovely sights and scenery Exmouth has to offer. This differs during the winter months – when there is entertainment most evenings.

Finally, one point in your review I must definitely disagree with - people do return to our hotel time and time again as many of the reviews show, and we happily welcome many returning faces here every week.

Stayed at the Grand for three nights in May. Could not have had a nicer break. Food was good and staff in all departments were so efficient and nothing was to much trouble for them. Up graded to a sea view room which was well worth doing bearing in mind the wonderfull views gained. Accommodation was very good. Would definately like to return in the future. Builders were in renovating many rooms and the main lift was being renewed but this caused us no problems.

We were very impressed with this hotel,superb room with lovely sea and estuary views also promenade very clean and staff extremely helpful,food was a lot better than we had experienced in other bay hotels.Wi fi is also available.Only one lift was in use,but we understand now that both lifts are now working.We will definately be returning in the future for another very enjoyable break

The rooms we chose had a wonderful sea view - the greatest asset of this hotel. It has a fabulous position on Exmouth sea front and is only a stone's throw from the lovely sandy beach. I'd also like to praise the staff who were friendly and helpful, clearly wanting guests to have a good stay.
Our room was fine with a decent shower and all the essentials, but unfortunately a relative who had the room next door had a window that wouldn't open and a shower that was too high for her to reach so she had to use ours. I would imagine that this would prove a problem for a number of people, particularly elderly ladies on the short side.
The rooms we had were on the top floor and I had checked when booking that there was a lift. Unfortunately, the lift was being re-fitted when we were there and it was quite a problem for my elderly relative to get up and down - either using about 5 flights of stairs or finding our way along corridors to the service lift at the other end of the hotel. I do feel we should have been warned about this, but I suspect that all the booking procedures were handled by Shearings and there was a definite lack of communication. The hotel does not plant itself on the map very effectively and seems to just be marketed as part of the Bay chain. There was not even a direct phone number that we could find. (We had booked privately, not as a coach trip, unlike most people).
I do think this hotel needs to step forward into the 21st century and offer a higher standard of facilities. Wi-fi is needed throughout the hotel, not just in the lobby and dining at the hotel should be given a higher status. The restaurant is tucked away in the basement - so you can't enjoy those sea views - and the food was not inspiring.
However, I would go back as I love Exmouth and it holds many dear memories for me. I would stay, once again, in a sea-view room and hope that the new lift was working! But I would eat out next time!

As you say the sea views are wonderful and I am glad you enjoyed your room. I am sorry about your relatives shower if we had known we could maybe have lowered it or moved her to another room. We do try to accommodate all guests needs if we are able. Also apologies about the front lift which was closed because we are having a new one fitted which as you can appreciate is necessary. The restaurant is tucked away in the basement but this is so guests can appreciate the wonderful views from all our lounges whenever they choose not just at meal times. Its a shame the food was not to your taste, nevertheless we hope to see you again in the future as the new lift will be up and working very soon, so you will be able to book a seaview room.
