We needed to stay overnight on journey from Cornwall with our Cocker Spaniel dog, Dooney. Dogs are made very welcome with even biscuits provided for them in our room. The five star inn is next to the beautiful Tarr Steps on Exmoore by River Barle. Room very comfortable. Excellent breakfast.Excellent evening meal. Very relaxing and refreshing place to stay. Would definitely like to reurn again to this friendly place.

Room Tip: All rooms are wonderful from what we believe

We stayed at Tarr Farm while walking the Exe Valley Way and although our stay was overal very good, there were one or two niggles...

On the plus side, our room ('Barle' after the river we'd walked along all day!) was large and very well appointed. Lovely large bathroom with Avalon Organics toiletries, fresh milk in the minibar, home made biscuits, comfy bed (important when one is having a sleepless night, of which more later). Dinner was excellent - my companion's steak was one of the best he'd ever tasted, and although my belly pork was also excellent, the potted shrimp starter was out of this world. Breakfast was also good, with a nice choice of cooked mains.

Which brings us on to the first negative. Breakfast was only served from 08:30 to 09:30, much later than we wanted (with 21 miles to walk the following day, we wanted an early start). The folder in our room said that an earlier breakfast was available on request, but when we asked our waiter at the evening meal whether we could have breakfast even slightly earlier (at 08:00) he looked totally baffled and blurted out that he didn't think it would be possible because the chef didn't get in until 08:00 - we were made to feel that it would hugely inconvenient. For a venue deep in huntin' shootin' and fishin' country, an 08:30 breakfast seems ridiculous - by the time you've finished your fry-up, the best part of the day is gone! As it was, we didn't get boots on the ground until nearly 09:30.

Second niggle - the noise! Ironic that I had a terrible night's sleep in such a tranquil location. Not the rushing of the stream outside the room, or late night boozers, but the lack of sound-proofing in the rooms themselves. Someone in another room above us (or to the side, I couldn't work out which during the hours I lay awake contemplating it) kept their TV on all night long at a volume just loud enough to be intensely irritating. I gather that soundproofing is an issue, judging from the numerous labels blu-tacked all over our room begging us to turn the bathroom lights off so that other guests aren't disturbed by the fan. Perhaps a big label blu-tacked to the TV saying DON'T LEAVE ME ON ALL NIGHT would also be helpful. That or issue earplugs at check-in.

Another very slight niggle - the service was a bit casual. We waited 20 minutes for anyone to notice we had arrived in the dining room and in the end I went into the bar to flush out some service, where I was asked if I had a reservation. I had to announce to the assembled drinkers that I was a resident - not a huge problem, but it seemed a bit slapdash when we'd only checked in a couple of hours before.

My family (inc two teenage kids and a dog) have just returned from a 3 night stay over the Easter holidays at Tarr Farm. It was simply outstanding in every way and we were sorry to have to drive back to London. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel completely at home by welcoming staff. Breakfast and dinner were superb and they have a great wine list at reasonable prices. Personally, the Thatchers Cider and Exmoor Ale combined with the fresh air and long walks, helped to contribute to a truly wonderful stay. Finding a hotel that welcomes dogs as much as two legged guests, really made this a great holiday. We will be back. Many thanks to Judy, Richard & Hilary.

I love this place. I have been here a few times and the location in my opinion is hard to beat. I was staying for a week in Devon, close by, and we visited three times during our stay and ate on a couple of occasions. The food is lovely, but all I would say is that some of the staff could be a bit more cheerful. I would fully recommend if you have not visited this location before. It is also perfect to walk off lunch or dinner in the surround countryside or along the river.

Booked in at this hotel as a last minute anniversary treat. It couldn't have been better! We received a lovely welcome, were given a room which was beautifully comfortable and with a great eye to little details which you don't get in most hotels, had a super dinner menu and breakfast to die for!
The local walks are wonderful.
Staff were welcoming and hostess Judy, kind, with time to make us feel at home.

Room Tip: All rooms have the same rural outlook.
