Our first visit to this delightful boutique hotel. You could not ask for a more attentive host than Sam (didn't meet Huw). Lovely to have radiator on and a warm cosy bedroom when we arrived. Meals were excellent, both quality of food and service. We only stayed one night on our way to St Ives, but will certainly be returning.

A return visit after a two year gap, we hoped that everything that had made our previous visits so memorable remained unchanged. We weren't disappointed. Hue and Sam are, as always, the perfect hosts; the room was fresh and clean and free from obvious wear and tear, and the new orangerie added further to the sense of calm and opulence.

We reverted immediately to a familiar routine; full English breakfast, hours of sea air and cliff top exercise, afternoon tea and home made cakes, pre-evening meal drinks and canapés and finally, the best dining experience this side of a Michelin star. The veggie menu is particularly impressive.

Summary - wonderful! We've booked for next year as we checked out.

If you are looking for a friendly hotel, with the best food, a wonderful setting and great accommodation then go to the Old Rectory. We have stayed before and each time the visit is superb. It's difficult to fault the experience really and its made all the more special by the attention of the owners. Only Huw was there on this visit as Sam was away but he made us feel like we were the only guests there and nothing was too much trouble. His staff are also polite and friendly. There has been a new orangery built since our last visit and it has created a lovely room to compliment the others - all of which are so well appointed and homely. If other hotels ever need to see how its done properly then visit this one!

Had our second stay at The Old Rectory. Everything about this place is first class. The rooms are extremely well furnished and well thought out.

The staff are helpful and friendly. Hugh, the co owner is affable and is very knowledgable and happy to help with food and drink (Sam was not there when we visited).

The food is top class, as good as anything I've had.

Great location if you like walking and the outdoors.

I'd recommend this place to anyone.

Down to earth luxury. That is how I would describe this place. It is comfortable yet luxurious at the same time. Hosts Huw and Sam are welcoming and friendly and happy to help out with places to go and walking routes. The food is out of this world, some of the best I (and my husband) have eaten. Definitely have the breakfast and dinner package, it is well worth it! All food is locally sourced, where possible, and freshly made. Afternoon tea with homemade cake is delicious and the breakfast marmalade is very special. We stayed in the Heddon suite which was comfortable and spacious with a HUGE bath and gorgeous Molton Brown toiletries. We will definitely return, it was second heaven!!

If you scroll down the reviews for this wonderful hotel you will see that this is not my first review for this gem of a hotel hidden away on the North Devon coast. In fact together with our daughter and now son-in-law we have all loved it so much that on the bank holiday weekend we booked the entire hotel for their marriage. It was Huw & Sam's first wedding as they don't yet officially do them but I think they will be in the future and if they don't then anyone looking for a small personal wonderfully organised wedding in a beautiful setting will be the poorer! I won't wax on about how wonderful the wedding weekend was, suffice to say it was like one long family & friends weekend party.
I will however praise the hotel setting, all the staff and Huw & Sam in particular they run a wonderful establishment. The addition of the new orangery last winter has benefited the hotel and everything about the Old Rectory is simply superb. The food as always is locally sourced, skilfully prepared and presented and best of all tastes wonderful and the wine list compliments the food and is very reasonably priced.
So if you are looking for a wonderful break in North Devon, love good company, comfort and good food the only reason to look further than the Old Rectory is that it might be fully booked, but then my advice would be to change your holiday dates!
And finally if your thinking about a wedding give Huw & Sam a call!

This is a great hotel, we have just finished a four night visit and have stayed several times before - the quality of this hotel is superb. Huw and Sam are wonderful hosts. Huw's cooking is delightful, utilising local products many with 'food miles ' that can be measured in feet and inches, cooked with great professionalism and care, Sam's knowledge of wine is faultless and he always has a new and interesting suggestion. The staff are lovely, friendly and very efficient and special thanks to them for being so welcoming. The new Orangery is a lovely place to relax, with gorgeous views into the garden. This is not a stuffy place, it is a fun place and thanks to its' hosts it is somewhere to relax and chill !!! We love it !!!!! See you again soon .........Jenny and Derrick
