“Great for a romantic break”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

We stayed here after reading good reviews and it didn't disappoint. The food was delicious from evening meal to breakfast, the restaurant cosy with subtle background music adding to the romantic atmosphere and the service excellent.

Our room was very comfortable and quiet with lovely views. Just two minor irritations, in our bathroom, the shower attachement was broken and couldn' be moved up and down and the flush was a bit hit and miss, but apart from that it was all good. This hotel really does live up to it's reviews. Well work a visit.

Thank you for your review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your weekend with us and that the hotel met your expectations.

Thank you for letting us know that you couldn't move the shower head up or down - this has been repaired by our maintenance team. Had you reported the problem whilst you were with us, this, of course, would have been rectified immediately for you. We hope it didn't spoil your stay.

As the hotel is in an idyllic remote spot our water comes from a local spring. We therefore have relatively low water pressure to refill our loos and so they can take a little longer to fill than in an urban environment. All our loos are silent fill and when flushed before completely refilling, may be "hit and miss"

I brought my parents here in April 2013 for our second stay for three nights. The previous visit having been in spring 2011. We were delighted to find that everything was as good as before. Huw and Sam are perfect hosts - we don't know how they always have time to stop and talk and offer advice on places to visit. The Hotel is very smart and clean and very tastefully furnished, with the Orangery being a great new addition, offering a very comfortable place to sit with good views onto the garden. The location is peaceful and ideal for touring the local coast and countryside. The food is excellent and a highlight of the day with wonderful traditional breakfast in the morning and superb evening meals using fresh local ingredients - the fish is particularly good. The staff are all a real asset, friendly, helpful yet unobtrusive. The only down side to the Old Rectory is that it makes it very difficult to ever go anywhere else. We look forward to another visit.

Returning to the Old Rectory a year after our first visit was an absolute treat. Huw, Sam and the lovely team were once again so welcoming, this place really does live up to all of its reviews. Beautiful rooms, excellent food and wine. The new Orangery is a lovely addition and adds beautifully to the relaxing atmosphere. We've never really been keen on revisiting the same place but The Old Rectory just does everything so well we can't wait to go back.

Just returned from a delightful few days at the Old Rectory Hotel. It is difficult to add to the already long list of excellent reviews other than to say we are missing it already. The hotel is spotless, tastefully furnished, warm, situated in a stunning part of the world and it draws you in and makes you want to stay forever. Huw and Sam are super hosts and make you feel relaxed and looked after. Service is exceptional, all the staff are friendly and helpful and the food is delicious. As I write this review I already wish I was back there. We would love to return especially if the best carrot I have ever tasted is on offer!! Thank you to Huw and Sam and staff, you have a wonderful place and I feel blessed to have been able to stay there.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Vinery room and were completely happy. Would love to try out one of the suites.

We felt more like house guests than hotel guests. A small and beautiful operation where hosts Huw and Sam set a very hospitable, informal tone ,aided by their friendly, unobtrusive waitresses. Well balanced, delicious freshly prepared dinners matched by an enterprising, quality for money wine list kept us more than happy during our 3 night stay. Recently installed orangery a good addition , providing guests with space to spread out. Rooms comfortable and quiet. We shall return.

Our second trip to The Old Rectory was as good, if not better than our mini-moon trip last August. We're not fans of returning somewhere we have been before but we know we will go back to this hotel time and again to enjoy Huw and Sam's outstanding warmth, welcome, hospitality, food, wine and beautiful hotel. We were fortunate enough to be upgraded for this visit and can't recommend the Heddon suite highly enough. Equally impressive are the fabulous new room that has been added and the gorgeous new orangery which manages to be light and airy whilst also feeling snuggly and cosy. It's beautiful in every respect. The food was as delicious as ever - the pancetta, gruyere and leek tart was our favourite dish of the week - and we are slowly making our way through a pot of the divine homemade marmalade we brought back with us.

I could wax lyrical for hours about this hotel and in fact did so to such an extent that we brought family with us on this return journey. They loved it as much as we do and are now persuading their friends to see for themselves how wonderful it is. Simply put, I can't recommend staying in this hotel highly enough.

Thank you to Huw, Sam and all their really wonderful staff for making our second stay such a delight. We can't wait to see you again very soon.

Room Tip: The suite (Heddon) has a sea view and is really lovely. Beeches is very quiet and possibly still ou...

This small hotel really is a little gem. We booked at the last minute and without reading the Trip Advisor reviews - but everything you read is true! So long as peace, unpretentious but first class service and understated style are to your taste, you won't be disappointed. The hotel has the feel of a home but with none of the homeliness, just subtle elegance (the beautifully light and spacious Orangery, new this season, blends superbly with the rest of this charming rectory, with views of the garden, a delightfully managed and very English enclave, with a pretty stream and attractive deck for evening drinks - unfortunately not an option when we visited at temperatures close to zero!). The dinner menu is consistently delicious and well-judged, with tempting vegetarian options and especially impressive starters and soups, with ingredients from the garden. Breakfast is equally excellent, although we were too full from dinner to take proper advantage of this! Bedrooms are very comfortable, with thoughtful provision of linen and genuinely crisp white sheets, but not lavish or ostentatious. Best of all, the whole place is blessed with peace and quiet, with the booking rules (no under 14s, for example) ensuring that guests share a common desire for a restful atmosphere - restful but not stuffy, at least not when we were staying, as guests enjoyed chatting over pre-dinner drinks and canapés, and we found a lot in common with our fellow residents.
And then there's the scenery - Woody Bay and Heddon's Mouth are quite the most well-kept secrets of the North Devon coastline, with fantastic views and unspoilt tracks -it quickly becomes obvious why the National Trust are so determined to preserve this stunning area in its natural state, yet accessible (if the steeper tracks are not for you, there are gentler and easier pathways which still offer fine views). And if you tire of the sea-scape, there are nearby Arlington Hall, the little steam railway, Waters Meet, and the even less well-trodden villages and byways of Exmoor offering more variety - though we didn't manage to catch even a glimpse of a genuine Exmoor pony!
