Huw & Sam set very high standards which they consistently maintain
Each we go to the Old Rectory, we are struck by the warmth of their welcome & the certainty that things will be just as good as the last time
The food is truly excellent, the accommodation stylish & comfortable, & the service is first class
As ever, nothing was too much trouble
We are already looking forward to our next stay

We have stayed there over the course of the last three years and each time it has been we have so we have found that Hew and Sam make it an experience to remember. The standard of the hotel comes in our mind a five star hotel. The food could be compared to any top restaurant with the detail that goes into it. The wine stock is very good Your stay can be as relaxing as you like, there are plenty of walks for those you do not want to relax.
We look forward to visiting again very soon

Just came back from a weekend at The Old Rectory Hotel. Absolutely great hotel, marvelous menu and first class wine list. Made all the more memorable by the hosts Sam and Huw. We both thought the hotel "exceeded expectations". Will definately go back again.

We were touring the S-W of England for almost 2 weeks and were very positively suprised to find a place like this: excellent and very personal service, dinners offering a selection of dishes of exceptional quality, a charming atmosphere. Huw and Sam have created an island of excellence and style - relaxed, with a good sense of humour. (OK, they could not change the lousy weather....). Thank you.

Hosts were nice, food was nice, the rooms very well-presented and Exmoor National Park is very nice. Fixed stilted dining regime, remote immediate setting ½ mile inland looking out over plain fields - middling; price near twice the norm; terms - boutique, country house, hotel are a ‘stretch’. Nice, but just not our cup of tea.

, Owner at The Old Rectory Hotel, responded to this review, July 5, 2012
We were delighted to read that in many ways the guest thought many aspects of their stay were “nice”. However, we were very disappointed by this review which is both factually incorrect and also at odds with itself and the majority of our other reviews. Whilst all opinion is subjective, we would, with respect, point out that this person’s view contradicts the vast majority of our guests, many of whom have taken the time to consistently post incredibly positive reviews on this website.

It is true that the Hotel is in a remote location but that is very much the point of staying here and why so many guests value it for its peace and tranquillity. We are in fact just 300m from the south west coast path with some of the most unspoilt and unique coastal scenery in the country. Indeed The Saturday Times in April 2012 featured the walk from the hotel along the local coast path dubbing it “one of the finest walks in the West Country” and naming our hotel as a “cool place to stay”.

It is true that one of our rooms looks out over a field – but it is a field in a National Park and land managed by the National Trust – not something most would call plain. Actually, some rooms in the hotel have a distant sea view and most overlook our wonderful gardens which are recommended by Alistair Sawday in his book “Special Places to Stay for Garden Lovers”
Our restaurant is exclusively for the use of our Guests and we therefore serve dinner in one sitting. Dinner at the Old Rectory is considered by most to be a civilised affair with excellent food and wine and an essential part of the experience of staying here. For guests who are not looking for this, there is the option to dine out.

We totally refute the observation that branding of our hotel using the terms “boutique”, “country house” and “hotel” is a “stretch” and in some ways is misleading. We and the overwhelming majority of our guests believe that we are a Boutique Country House Hotel. Our property is an old Georgian Rectory in a hamlet in a National Park – in other words the quintessential English Country House.

So, what is a boutique Hotel? Whilst this is open to debate, the majority of boutique hotel operators and owners agree that a boutique hotel by definition is small, stylish, distinctive and intimate.

Such establishments attract a niche of customers looking for a special and differentiated experience able to fulfil their individual needs. Boutique hotels are not boxed into corporate standards – most, like ourselves, have unique decoration in each room, making every single stay unique, even for their repeat guests.

We regret that we were “not their cup of tea” and hope that they find what they are looking for next time.

We went to the Old Rectory to recover from a hectic three weeks at home with our daughters wedding one week followed almost immediately by a family bereavement. We were looking for somewhere quiet, with good food and a calm and relaxed atmosphere. We were not disappointed in fact the hotel exceeded our expectations. Nothing was too much trouble Huw and Sam. You just asked for something and it was delivered whether it was a cup of tea, suggestion for a walk or place to visit. The food was superb, the rooms were great and overall the other reviewers have said it all!!

Carry on Huw, Sam and all your dedicated team you are doing a great job.
