“WOW - Fantastic a Christmas to remember!”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

Me, My husband & Mum & Dad and our two dogs each have just spent an amazing Christmas away at the White Horse in Exford. We had some of THE best food ever eaten in a hotel with a huge variety of fish & meats to suit all.

The hospitality was the best I have ever experienced with their whole family chipping in to help make everyone stay so good. Nothing was too much effort including the fact that I had broken my leg prior to going and they managing to swap me to a ground floor room. Loved the Carol service outside the hotel too.

Our rooms were even cleaned on Christmas day and Santa found us and gave us a lovely present!!
A huge thank you for spoiling us all including the 4 dogs for a very enjoyable Christmas!

Highly recommended!

Had a two night stay booked through 'living social' deal. We were put in the Lodge rather than the main hotel, I suspect because we paid less than the list price. These rooms were tiny and felt very cramped. We couldn't see any price difference on the hotel web site so would advice that you confirm when booking. The restaurant is excellent and the bar has a nice atmosphere. The receptionist was clearly having an off couple of days as she was very unwelcoming and seemed to be a bit cross whenever we spoke to her.

We were saddened to read your review as we hate to think that anyone leaves The Exmoor White Horse Inn feeling that they have not had an enjoyable experience. Rest assured that you were not put in the Lodge simply because you were booked on the Living Social Offer, and also please note that the rooms in The Lodge are of exactly the same quality as the main hotel but you must appreciate that in a 16th century building the size of all the rooms, both ain hotel and lodge, can vary greatly but we do furnish and decorate all to a very high standard. The offer you were booked on was based on a Standard Double Bedded Room although upgrades were available which would have meant a slightly larger room if you had so wished.

As far as the attitude of the Receptionist goes we sincerely apologise for this, it is totally unacceptable and the person concerned will be spoken to. We pride ourselves on our hospitality and as much as we all have "off" days, it is part of our job to ensure that all our guests have the best experience of Exmoor and The Exmoor White Horse Inn as is possible.

We wish you a very Happy 2013

Christmas is such a special time of year, both for customers and management and staff alike, and we are so pleased that we managed to make your Christmas special. Many of our guests at Christmas and New Year are returning customers which gives the whole festive period a real "family feeling" for us all. We really hope to be able to welcome you back in the near future and we wish you both a very happy 2013

We were looking for a hotel from where we could explore Exmoor and the surrounding area, would accept dogs so we could bring our 1 year old chocolate labrador with us and came across the White Horse Inn as part of a Living social deal. We choose December as this coincides with my birthday . On arrival we were given a welcome pack, that included several ideas for both walking and road trips which we found useful and gave us additional ideas for places to see and visit.

Although we had a problem with the room radiator, once reported it was quickly resolved and the room heated up nicely which was good as it was one of the coldest nights of the year. The fire burning in the lounge made this a cosy place to sit and eat our cream tea.

We ate in both the restaurant and bar and we although the food in the restaurant was good we both felt that the cheese sauce overpowered the pork and steak we selected but this can be down to personal choice than anything else. The bar offered a great range of choice meals and local beers and was a good informal alternative to the restaurant, if you are a whisky lover this is the the place to be due to the numerous whiskeys on offer in Malt Corner The breakfast was hearty and set us up for our explorations of the area and the flask hot water refill service was ideal for this time as year as many places were closed down for season.

The service provided by the staff was excellent especially the bar and restaurant staff and the dog was made welcome and enjoyed the fuss given to him. We would definitely consider using this Inn again should be revisit the area.

We appreciate you taking the time to leave your review and we are really pleased to hear that you had a good time here. Exmoor is definitely an area for all seasons and even in December Exmoor has loads to offer, including fantastic walking country with the added bonus of returning to the hotel to experience Exmoor hospitatlity at its best!

We all remember your beautiful chocolate lab and we hope to be able to welcome you all back in the near future. Happy New Year from us all.

After a 4 hour journey, we arrived at The White Horse Inn. We had found an offer on the Internet for a two night stay which included breakfast and a cream tea. We were shown to our room which was adequate and clean but out of keeping. We were parched so went straight down to the bar to have our cream tea. The bar was drafty and cold. The cream tea was disappointing, the scones were doughy and stodgy although we did have a laugh about how we looked like a dogs chewing on toffees!
Unfortunately the weather was awful but we thought we'd venture out and explore the village to see what cosy country pubs we could visit later on that evening. We walked around a tiny little ghost town which had just one other small bar. With regards to restuarants - there was one B&B which served basic evening meals. We had no alternitive but to eat in our hotel restaurant but we were happy with that as many of the reviews said the food was very good. This was most definitely not the case. The starters were tasteless and amateurish. All the main courses on the menu were priced at £15 per head, unless of course you wanted steak which had a supplement. I ordered Duck a l'orange (see photo attached). The duck was over cooked and really dry and the so called Grand Marnier orange sauce consisted of a tin of mandarin segments emptied over the duck. I complained and they offered me something else from the menu. I declined as my partner would have finished his like warm mediocre meal by then.
On the hotel websites photos, there was a lovely roaring log fire. Even though it was really wet and cold, the fire wasn't lit. There was no atmosphere in the bar but we had 2 choices - sitting in the bar or in our room as there was absolutely nothing else to do.
The breakfast however, was excellent and the staff were very warm and welcoming.

We went to Porlock Weir for the day which was lovely. We stopped off at a Supermarket on the way back and bought snacks to eat in our room that evening.

If you have visions of a romantic, cosy weekend away (like we did) this is not the place to go.
If you are looking for a base to go for a walking or cycling break, then this might be for you.

To say we were surprised, somewhat confused as well as upset, by the review you left would be an understatement!

Your review states that you visited in August this year, yet only now, 4 months later, have you decided to leave a review, when most people do so almost immediately after their stay with us, and rest assured, if we went somewhere and were as unhappy as you seem to be, we would be inclined not only to leave an immediate comment but also to speak to Management at the time to make our concerns known.

As you can see from previous reviews we are based in a small village in the middle of Exmoor and proud of it, it’s not a ghost town and we are not sure how many pubs you would expect to find in a village of this size, but two is more than adequate, (and they are two hotels, not simply pubs!) although you could have driven further afield if you felt so inclined, with the next few villages being about 10 mins away, all similar in size but those only boast one pub per village!

We strive to offer good food, hospitality and service, and our high level of repeat business would indicate that we are definitely successful at what we do. Unfortunately it would appear that we were just not to your taste, not something that we feel you can blame us for, it was after all your choice to come here. You describe the room as "out of keeping" but out of keeping with what we are not sure, as all our rooms are individually decorated and furnished to a very high standard. The reason for fires not being lit in August is quite simply that, it’s August!

At the end of the day it would appear that the offer you booked on appealed to you but you did not do your homework on the location or setting of the hotel, which we would like to add, is simply idyllic, the ideal place to get away from all the hustle and bustle and simply unwind in a traditional and beautiful country village location with the stunning Exmoor moors and wildlife all around. Heaven to most people!

This is quite simply an excellent pub/hotel for a weekend break. It is an oldie-worldie pub located in the middle of Exmoor, and realistically is the only place to eat in Exford. The staff are very friendly as well as being highly professional. Three staff members deserve special mention: our waitress Anthea who made our stay an especially memorable one with those little and much appreciated extras; our French-English waiter Vincent who went to no end of trouble to ensure that we spent our day of leisure in Exmoor in the best possible way; and Martin the barman who looks after one brilliantly, whether filling one's glass or filling one's plate. Everywhere, the walls are bedecked with photographs from the proprietor, Peter Hendrie; all very good and all for sale. My only criticism concerns the matrasses on the beds which are hard enough to be standard prison issue. Apart from this one exception, the hotel has got its formula just right: intended as a family hotel, it successfully makes one feel part of the family, if only for a day or so! I couldn't recommend it highly enough!

We stayed at Court Farm in the middle of October and the White Horse was the local for us. 1st time we went there we had been for a long walk and were filthy and as was the dog but it wasn’t a problem.

We had the Carvery which was excellent value and to a high standard. As far as I am concerned if they can get roast potatoes right when doing a carvery its ok with me. Lots of fresh vegetables and properly cooked meat.

Staff were friendly as were most of the locals. Our dog is not great with other dogs and barks a lot but nobody seemed to mind.

Visit this place if your in Exford.
