Sandaway Beach Holiday Park
Reviewed August 26, 2014

This was the first John Fowler park we ever stayed at and we loved it! We know the area very well as I have been coming down to Ilfracombe since I was 4 years old, I'm now 33! :/ ..the views are lovely! We love rock pooling down at coombe Martin as well as visiting the Dinosaur Park and Watermouth Castle. We recently stayed at the Ilfracombe John Fowler and it's safe to say "Never again"! We havnt been to Sandaway park this year but we can't wait for next year where we will definitely be booking up at this lovely site. Looking forward to plenty more happy holidays at Sandaway! See you next year!

Just came back from a great week at sandaway we booked a buget caravan just as a base and was surprised to find how spacious and clean it was we had a good view of the sea which was fantastic our cavavan was also next to the swimming pool, club house and the park didn't really use the foxy club as we were always out and about our best bits was walking down the 76 steps down to a private beach so the kids could go rock pooling.then there's a short walk down a little steep hill to coombe martin itself we didn't want to come back and I would recommend this site to others.a holiday is what you make it if you go out looking for negative things then you will find them go with an open mind and enjoy your stay the only criticism thing I could say was the lady who worked in the shop was not very helpful had to wait to be served because she was sweeping the floor even if there was 5 people waiting to be served and never spoke to you that's the only criticism I have of this park x

Hello Andrea

Thank you very much for leaving us such a fantastic review thank you, we really appreciate it.

Your praise will mean so much to the management and staff at the park. They all work extremely hard to make everyone’s stay enjoyable.

Sorry, about the lack of customer service in our shop. As you experienced, this is not the way we normally do things and your observations have been passed on to the relevant head of department.

We look forward to welcoming you again very soon, - our returning guests are so important to us and are the reason that we have been so successful for the past 60 years.

Just got back from a week in a bronze caravan with family and dog. The view from the caravan was breathtaking. A panoramic view across the Bristol Channel. The caravan would have been a top spec van in its day with a well equipped kitchen and comfy bed. As we suspected from staying in an older van which dogs are allowed that it would look a bit tired and worn which was fine as most areas were spotlessly clean. Only two down sides. The lounge sofa area smelled really bad of dog. We had to spray it with febreeze every day to make it bearable and there was a leak somewhere in the bathroom which made the bedroom carpet wet.
The park itself is very well kept and the outdoor pool was lovely and clean and warm. It is very hilly with 76 steps down to the beach and a scramble over boulders at the bottom. We used Hele beach instead just up the road as it is easy to access and dog friendly.
The club was ok for the kids although the games arcade could do with some more games for children and less fruit machines.
I would recommend the site to anyone but advise staying in a better grade of caravan as the Bronze one we stayed in was definitely at the end if it's life.

Hello Rachel

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave us such a lovelyreview.

Your comments have been passed to all departments and everyone will be especially delighted to read your comments about the park.

With regard to the caravan, no doubt you are aware that caravans have a shelf-life of about 10 to 12 years, after which they are replaced with a new one. This programme of replacement in on going and takes place during the off-season. As you say, we try to restrict pets to just our Budget, Bronze or Silver vans, for the reasons you have high-lighted.

We really hope to see you again in the near future

We booked through a Sun holiday and therefore for what we paid were very pleased with our caravan. We stayed as a family + grandparents all in one but was pleasantly surprised at the standard knowing the horrors you can experience.

We didn't use any of the on site facilities, being term time early in the season it was very quiet on site so we mainly used it as a base to get out exploring the area.

The only disappointment is that the pool is outside (my fault I I hadn't thought to look before booking) but were it indoor would have certainly made use of it and therefore possibly more of the facilities onsite.

We did take a walk down to the cove which is worth doing and exploring the rock pools below.

The area generally both inside and outside the park can be steep, although the town is only a short walk down the road there is no foot path so you'd have to walk on the road which is a steep hill and tight corner - with little ones we didn't want to chance it so drove everywhere.

Hello The Bailey Family

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback; it’s always a pleasure receiving such positive comments.

We are very lucky with the location of our park in such a beautiful part of Devon and we are delighted that you were able to share that experience.

With regard to your comments regarding the walk down to The Combe Martin Sea Front and Village, sadly you missed the path which is a very safe short cut avoiding having to use the main road.

Hills, yes we have hills, but we also have remarkable scenery which is very much a part of the attraction of North Devon. Unfortunately, it is impossible to have one without the other - no hills no spectacular scenery.

Let me thank you again for taking the time to leave this lovely review and we look forward to welcoming you back to our park very soon.

The views are this Canavan park are beautiful. Noticeable as soon as you pull into the park.

I booked a Silver Caravan for me and 5 friends, our caravan was clean and spacey, the Twin is tiny but this is a Caravan not a hotel so I'm this is to be expected. The Caravan we were given was disabled friendly and seemed big enough to cater for a wheelchair user however this park is on a hill and the walk down to Combe Martin is down a very steep walkway, which does not have a light ( pitch black at night ).

We didn't use the Pool, Bar or takeway ( I think having a takeway on site was brilliant however didn't get a chance to eat here ) I did use the shop, I found the female shop assistant to be slightly blunt but the stock is good and isn't over priced.

The parks beach is again down very steep steps, not suitable for disabled people or wheelchairs. The beach it's self is lovely and pretty private, we managed to have a BBQ with not issues and enjoyed the scenery.

I would return to this park as the views are to die for. I feel the money I paid for this caravan was great value.

Just returned from a weeks stay with 3 kids , a dog and a grandparent .

Good points
Lovely location , Combe Martin is a nice base to explore north devon
Fantastic sea view from our caravan
Lovely warm swimming pool
Clean caravan , if a little worn in places
Great staff ( the ones in the ago tend to be a little grumpy ! )
Kids clubs are as you expect but mine enjoyed them .

Bad points
Waiting over an hour past check in time for our keys ( limited parking around the site )
The wait for food was over an hour on busy nights , staff look frazzled and you pay the same price for take away food that you pay to eat in ??!!!
Depending where your caravan is located be prepared for a steep walk up to club house
Slow service at the bar ,due to one person manning the bar on busy evenings .
Lack of facilities ( this is a small site so a small shop and small clubhouse )
Pool is lovely but be prepared to wait for entry on busy days

Overall this is a nice site , the caravan we had (44) was silver and was worn in places . Don't expect the DVD player to work and the tv receiption is iffy . The caravan was spotlessly clean and linen too . If you want somewhere to use as a base for exploring surrounding areas and not too fussy about spending your time on site , then this is the site for you . We would not hesitate to return again one summer .

Hello Sarah

Thank you for taking the time to leave your fair and honest feedback; it’s always a pleasure receiving the positive comments.

We do take great pride in cleaning all grades of accommodation to a very high standard and it’s brilliant that this isn’t going unnoticed. All comments will be passed on to our Housekeeper and the cleaning team.

With regard to the takeaway, that is a part of the park that has become the victim of its own success - the demand for their excellent food being greater that the facilities to prepare it. This is an area we will be looking at in the future.

Let me thank you again for taking the time to leave this review and we look forward to welcoming you back to our park very soon.

Pluses: Fantastic views
Friendly staff
Minuses : Appalling level of accommodation, we booked at the last minute and only had the choice of a bronze caravan or silver apartment, chose to pay more and have the silver apartment, but having read the reviews I think we would have been better off in a caravan. Apartment smelt of wet dog and there were dog hairs covering the carpet. Kitchen drawers full of crumbs, hairs in shower, toilet unclean and with the exception of the carpet (which housekeepers came and re hoovered) I cleaned everything, not a great start to the holiday. Having paid £115.00 per night I would expect a certain standard of decoration and level of comfort, I cant say we had either. In addition within minutes of arrival at 5pm our 'neighbours' situated below us welcomed our arrival by banging on the ceiling, so we spent our holiday tiptoeing and telling the children to be quiet so as not to upset the people below. We did of course request a move but were told that there was no availability at any John Fowler park. We were extremely lucky with the weather meaning we really just used the apartment to shower and sleep. These apartments should be buldozed or only used for £15 per week newspaper offers!

When I first read this very poor review, I immediately tried to contact the writer through the Tripadvisor Messaging service to investigate the issues and to check its validity. Sadly, with all Tripadvisor reviews being anonymous, it is impossible to make direct contact.

To date I have not received a reply to two such messages and I am disappointed that I have not been given the opportunity to put things right. We have to assume from this, that perhaps the holiday was not as bad as originally reported or that the review was not written by a genuine visitor.
