Sandaway Beach Holiday Park
Reviewed May 23, 2012

Just got back from a weeks holiday at sandaway bay , with my hubby , we stayed in poney caravan which had plenty of room, heating in the bedroom which was not expected but kept us nice and warm on wet windy nights..Park was immaculate. All staff were very friendly and helpful on sandaway bay and combe martin there sister site. we had a lovely sea view from our caravan.. ( which you soon miss) when you get back home. We did use the club and chef corner which were both not to pricey and qauilty of service was excellent. we also walk down to combe martin from the site down a very steep hill ( after a couple of times you get use to it )combe martin itself is a very nice village with plenty of rocks.. so children and adults alike can go rock pooling..its also has some outstanding views . we are certainly going back next year for another relaxing holiday.

I stayed at Sandaway as part of of Sun deal with my wife and two small children. It was very cheap, and our expectations were low (we've found it's better to have low expectations with this type of holiday, that way you're seldom disappointed!) - All we need is a clean and dry place as a base to explore the area - and it was perfect for that. The caravan was very dated and tatty. It was however clean, and warm. It had an awesome view overlooking the bay which more than made up for the 70's decor. There were only three or four caravans which had this outlook, the rest had views of other caravans!

The staff were all very friendly, although we only ventured into the reception/bar area to check in and out. It was the typical holiday camp style - grim, darkly lit and a depressing. The pool looked clean, and the campsite in general was tidy, if in need of modernisation.

There is a 'private' beech down a few steps, but it's not the kind of beech sun-worshippers like, it is the kind of beach kids (and grown up kids) love, with lots of rock pools, caves and places to explore.

Combe Martin was a little disappointing, as it's a bit dull, but Ilfracombe more than made up for it.

Just spent 5 nights at Sandaway bay, Combe Martin with my hubby, son (3yrs). Stayed in a Gold caravan, which was practically brand new. Park was immaculate, staff friendly and helpful and the views were amazing. The evening entertainment was especially enjoyable for my 3 year old son, he adored Freddy. He hasn't stopped speaking about him since we got home! My only issue with the park was the long and very trecherous steps down to the beach. Very slippy especially for kids. When we got to the bottom, it was not a safe beach to sit on, very rocky. If you want a nice beach I would recommend Ilfracombe or our personal favourite, woolacombe!

I have just returned from Sandaway Holiday Park after spending 4 nights there with my family of 6 members. We have stayed at a John Fowler before and therefore i was a bit worried as the previous park was grotty. This park is lovely, it over looks the sea and its on top of the cliff , the scenery is beautiful. We stayed in a Gold Primula caravan number 34, my first impression when i opened the door was wow. It was stunning, the best caravan we have ever stayed in. It looked new and was spotlessly clean and very well equipped. We had a bedroom with walk in wardrobe, the shower was a power shower. It was centrally heated and excellent all round couldn't fault it.
The lounge was spacious plenty of seating, had a tv, dvd and ipod dock. The kitchen was well equipped and new. We had a lovely sea view. The staff on site were very friendly and nothing too much trouble. It is a good base for exploring North Devon and Somerset. The club house was clean and not expensive, we did have one meal in chefs corner which was very nice and the chef was very friendly. We didn't use any of the clubs entertainments as we like a quiet time. Combe Martin has some nice shops and pubs, the Marine Hotel does a lovely carvery on a Wednesday and other nights the menu is very good and of a good quality. Overall we had a great time we paid such a small amout to stay here and we would recommend it to anyone. No sure what the quality of the other accomodation was like, in doubt go for gold.

Room Tip: go for gold primula caravan

We stayed as a family in a silver rated 3 bed caravan ,Easter mon- fri ,and paid just under £300 ( 4 nights) on arrival at 4pm our caravan was spacious and very clean with all the usual kit you'd expect ( tv,kettle, toaster, etc, etc) for a nice break ,unfortunately tho that's mainly the good bits ,the single beds were very small and all the mattresses were solid in fact it was like sleeping on the floor, the caravan was also freezing we had a gas fire in the front room which was ok but only 1 small envelope sized heater in 1 bedroom the double well that wouldn't keep a stamp warm ,having only a summer quilt each and no extras nights were very unpleasant in fact my wife and 2 small children (3&5) slept in the front room pull out bed every night as it was warmer...the walk down to the private (small cove) beach very rocky with black sand, was also very hard work I would not recommend this to anyone with small children (handrails missing) or older people it's not safe, and very tiring coming back up (find alternative I.e Combe Martin) there is an outdoor heated pool which is small and the toddler section would fit 2 toddlers with adults to sit in ,we never saw a life guard and every night was left uncovered so was more like a duck pond god knows what diseases and excrement the ducks left but the staff new and did nothing needless to say I wouldn't let my children swim in it. ,the small park area was old and dated but ok for 20 mins before the kids got bored also there was a huge holly bush in one corner (spikes an all) which did get removed the day we left, the indoor play area was ok ,I'd say 10 kids max, ball pit ,slide,Lego, pool table (£1) couple machines ,shame there was about 6 adult 1arm bandits in there as it for children and more kids machines would have been suitable, the shop was ok the usual camp site stock bit expensive but that's what you pay for convenience,it closed midday till 430 tho,and then opened till 730. The clubhouse had a nice diner eat in or take away , it was serving a pub grub type menu with a lot of home made dishes and was very good value for money ,main courses were only £5/£6 and large portions all cooked and served by the diner owner who was by far the most pleasant staff member and I would recommend you try eating there especially the pies, the rest of the clubhouse was ok kids entertainment 6-8 was fun for under 10s then a bit of bingo shame there's no pens either free or for sale after 9 it was more grown up and was ok singing games etc shame lot people left as its not the biggest place, the bar was bit expensive and even more so when ripped off by a female member of staff who charged me £3.20 to much while I was talking to a holidaymaker and didn't realise till it was to late (check your change and prices) the other female member of staff was at times rude and very unhelpfull ( needs communication skills lessons) when my wife was ripped off by the bandit not paying out the £13 she,d won this member of staff just said the plug must have fell out we won't pay you so there's nothing you can do ,I also asked for gaming machine hirers number which although on machine she didn't no then couldn't read it she was very rude, this same member of staff told my children to leave the downstairs play area at 725 as she wanted to close up but it states in the welcome pack it's open 10-8 and should be open earlier and later (no times on door had to find out ourselves) nothing for teenagers to do so if like us you have any take your own laptop to use and make use of the free wi-fi as they charge £1 for 15mins to use in house net ...I must admit the fellow holiday makers were very friendly and good company .....overall very expensive and average site that didn't live up to standards of parkdean and woodlands sites.....the ground staff were very friendly also ...I must recommend milky way theme park great day and value for money (half price rtn voucher lasts all yr) and you can take your own food and drinks and come in an out to your car save carrying things about all day ..very friendly too.....well worth the 50 min drive.....

Myself, my partner, our 10yr old Daughter & our dog had an amazing time at Sandaway. I expected that because we had booked a dog friendly caravan that it might be a little tatty, how wrong we were. The caravan was spotless, well maintained & had everything we needed with a view of the beach at Combe Martin that was truly magnificent. If your looking for a friendly , relaxing & clean holiday park then you can't beat Sandaway. The staff go out of their way to ensure you have a brilliant holiday, the views are spectacular, there is a fascinating beach a short walk away full of rock pools & again, spotless!!! I would highly recommend this beautiful place!!
