On one of the wetest nights (22nd December) in wet 2012 I arrived at the Pack O'Cards to attend the Shammick Acoustic Folk Club. The roads were like rivers and Braunton was under a couple of feet of water. I was relieved to have made it from Totnes, and shortly after my arrival the road in was closed off because of landslides.
The welcome was instantly warm and genuine. I was there to see an old friend sing as a member of the visiting Quire from Hay on Wye. In the bar was a bunch of talented musicians who seemed to be an informal club practising new pieces on each other. I had assumed they were there for the Shammick Club but no they were a quite separate gathering.
The hotel served up some very tasty food for the Quire prior to their performance. looking at other reviews the food seems to be popular, so all I can add is that the standards remain high.
The Shammick Acoustic Club have been using the hotel for a few seasons and it was a nice gesture of Chris, the owner, to announce how much he enjoyed having them there. Any establishment will draw its character from the owner/ management and what comes over is the unpretentiousness, good humour and friendliness of atmosphere he and Debs generate.
After the club evening and the bar was empty Chris played some classical music very loud for his own pleasure as he cleared up. However, he turned it down and joined us for a chat before the Quire turned out into the rain to stay with their folk club hosts. I was the only one staying.
When Chris served me breakfast in the morning we talked about the age of this fascinating building. Its a gem of an historic building and would be worth visting in its own right. When you add the friendliness, good value and musicality of the place it hits all the notes!

This is the third time we have stayed at The Pack and once again have had a fabulous stay. Our room is always excellent- clean, nice decor, wonderfully comfortable bed and good facilities. Breakfast was much enjoyed and always served with a smile and the bar and restaurant offer comfortable surroundings and friendly staff. In fact the Combe Martians are altogether a friendly bunch! We will definitely be going back and can highly recommend.

Me and my girlfriend came to stay for a couple of nights as we were attending a wedding in Barnstaple and wanted to make the trip away slightly more special. And special it was!
FANTASTIC breakfast and coffee, with a nice personal homely touch. The room was clean, the shower fine and a firm favourite was the TV / Ipod doc as our Ipods go everywhere with us so was great to blast some of our own tunes whilst getting ready for the wedding. The option of a separate key and entrance was great too; gave a sense of independence and privicy from the other regular customers. Comfy beds and no ghosts (!) not to mention the huge mugs in the room, great as most hotels only offer small piddly mugs which is not what having a cuppa tea is all about in my book! A warm hotel with fantastic staff, thanks guys we will be back!

Room Tip: The pink room with four poster is lovely.

Very nice people running a lovely pub.

If you happen to be there on a Sunday give the belly of pork a go! Delicious...

The location, is great and the garden is very good for children too.

Overall highly recommended.

Matt.

We have now stayed at the Pack o' cards on a few occaisions and we absolutely love it.
The whole family (Chris, Debbie, Sarah and James) are the friendliest people we have ever met. Along with the great barstaff they have (including waitresses).
The greeting you recieve makes you believe that they were once your best friends but you'd forgotten lol.
Warm genuine people who could not do enough for you.
The rooms are amazing (especialy the Four Poster).
James (The chef) produces an array of meals to suit any pallette. I have probably worked my way through most of the menu and want to try them all again (lol). His Sunday roasts are amazing and very good value
As you have probably guessed, I would recommend this establishment to anyone who either wants a holiday in the area, or who just want a romantic weeked away. You will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: I would alays ask for the "Pink Room", but to be honest, I have seen all the rooms and the...

Visited for Sunday lunch, with my partner.

The restaurant was fairly average and quite cold inside.

We visited at the end of the service and were the only knew there (we were just in time for food)

The service was excellent. We were recommended the roast Pork and it was simply stunning!
Perfectly cooked roast pork belly, and fresh veg.
We also ordered a desert - Creme Brûlée which was beautifully presented Andrade to perfection.

All in all very good.

Lost a point because venue was average, restaurant needed to be heated better and at one point the waitress referred to us as 'boys' when saying "is everything alright boys"
I am 35!!

Will certainly visit again though, and would strongly recommend it to anyone!

We had a fantastic Sunday roast. The slow roast pork was the best we have tasted. No carvery just a plate full of freshly cooked vegetables.
The Inn was inviting with clean and modern toilet facilities.
A real treat with excellent service.
