On one of the wetest nights (22nd December) in wet 2012 I arrived at the Pack O'Cards to attend the Shammick Acoustic Folk Club. The roads were like rivers and Braunton was under a couple of feet of water. I was relieved to have made it from Totnes, and shortly after my arrival the road in was closed off because of landslides.
The welcome was instantly warm and genuine. I was there to see an old friend sing as a member of the visiting Quire from Hay on Wye. In the bar was a bunch of talented musicians who seemed to be an informal club practising new pieces on each other. I had assumed they were there for the Shammick Club but no they were a quite separate gathering.
The hotel served up some very tasty food for the Quire prior to their performance. looking at other reviews the food seems to be popular, so all I can add is that the standards remain high.
The Shammick Acoustic Club have been using the hotel for a few seasons and it was a nice gesture of Chris, the owner, to announce how much he enjoyed having them there. Any establishment will draw its character from the owner/ management and what comes over is the unpretentiousness, good humour and friendliness of atmosphere he and Debs generate.
After the club evening and the bar was empty Chris played some classical music very loud for his own pleasure as he cleared up. However, he turned it down and joined us for a chat before the Quire turned out into the rain to stay with their folk club hosts. I was the only one staying.
When Chris served me breakfast in the morning we talked about the age of this fascinating building. Its a gem of an historic building and would be worth visting in its own right. When you add the friendliness, good value and musicality of the place it hits all the notes!
