“Retirement”
Reviewed June 25, 2010

We just required a short break following my retirement. We love Combe Martin, and have done so since we first visited the resort many years ago, some 35 years, when our children were young.

However, we stayed at the Poplars in 2009 and enjoyed it so much that we booked for a return stay after my retirement in June of this year. The reason was that we enjoyed the previous stay so much, that we looked forward to another comfort break.

We were not disappointed. Cliff and Jean the proprietors, still offered the high level of service that we had the previous year. It was quieter than expected this year in June compared to last year's Septemeber's visit, but this gave us an unexpected pleasure when we visited tourist attractions that would be busier in the coming months.

Cliff and Jean have spent many years, days and hours, in refurbishing the hotel, the latest of which is the dining room.

Cliff is the front man who will keep you amused with his experiences and activities.

Jean provides excellent food, both for breakfast and the evening meals, the latter which works out at about £15.00 per person for three courses and coffee, and is worth every penny when it is served in their lovely restaurant and can be accompanied by a later drink in their very comfortable bar.

The bar prices are very reasonable.

The beach is only about a few hundred yards away so that a late night drink at a costal bar could also be appropriate.

I hope that this revew will be of assisatnce as wel as the attached photographs of the hotel.

One final point is that balcony rooms are well worth it as you can get a lovely sea view

We have been staying at the Poplars for many years and have been known to visit 3 or 4
times a year. You receive such a warm friendly welcome and are made to feel relaxed and at ease in such beautiful surroundings. Jean and Cliff put everything in to this hotel to make it the most popular place to stay you have to book well in advance to make sure you get in as it gets booked so quickly.
The meals are all home cooked using local fresh produce and are so tasty and very well presented. Cliff and Jean provide guests with their own varied entertainment and include all sorts of varied evenings from quiet relaxing evenings in the well stocked bar to quizzes pool tournaments varied games etc. The rooms are all beautifully decorated and clean and well equipped with T.V utility tray etc .... if you do decide to stay here you can be certain you will want to return very very soon .As long as Jean and Cliff are there we would not stay anywhere else.

My wife and I, have been staying at the Poplars Hotel on a regular basis for the past eleven years, and hope to continue to do so as long as Jean and Cliff the resident proprietors remain at the helm. Your hosts have a natural talent for putting their guests at ease and the friendly relaxed atmosphere is soon realized from the initial welcome you receive. The meals are substantial, and superbly cooked, leaving you well satisfied whilst at the same time looking forward to the next sitting. The hotel lounge boasts a varied and well stocked bar in which to relax in the evening if so minded. This combined with Cliff's entertaining skills will lighten the moodiest of moods. Cliff and Jean's continuous programme of upgrading, whilst maintaining the unique character of the hotel, ensures a most comfortable and relaxing stay. The tariff is very competitive and fair. Why should we risk disappointment by trying anywhere else.
