My husband and I stayed here last week with our fourteen and a half year old dog who is not at all agile now.We were given an lovely upstairs room with a four poster bed looking out to the front of the house and the East Lyn river. During the evening my husband had to take our dog outside and then carry her back upstairs, not an easy task as she is very heavy, because she couldn't manage them. Wendy, who owns the Inn, with her husband, Richard noticed this and the next morning we were offered a downstairs room for which we were more than grateful. All we had to do was pack our bags and by the time we got back from a lovely day out they were waiting in our new room. I cannot imagine many if any other place doing this. No four poster bed but one which was very comfortable. The bathroom was newly refurbished and the whole place spotlessly clean. The breakfast and evening meals were freshly cooked to order and the food was lovely and there was plenty of it. One would never go hungry at The Stag Hunters. We cannot praise Wendy, Richard, their family and their staff highly enough. They were so warm and friendly and nothing was too much trouble for any of them. You only had to ask for something and it was done. We had a lovely time there with lovely people and will definitely go back. I cannot understand the people who were 'greeted rather oddly' and complained about everything. There is nothing to complain about in an establishment such as this. Perhaps they do not like to greeted with a friendly, welcoming smile.

We were staying here at the same time as the above who have given a poor review. We had a totally different experience and would highly recommend this hotel. We witnessed their arrival in the restaurant and overheard some of the conversation. All I can say is that they were the only ones who had a problem. Everyone else who stayed at the same time loved the hotel and the family who own it. They behaved as if they were better than the rest of us and avoided any attempts at eye contact or conversation. Thank goodness they left early and we could all relax again. Please visit this lovely place to make up your own mind.

Thank you so much for your kind words, they were very uplifting after a very busy time.

And whilst responding to your review I hope you don't mind if I take the opportunity to thank all the reviewers who say such nice things. Wendy myself and the team really appreciate it and would love to see all of you again.

Best wishes,
Richard.

We were made to feel very comfortable and at home here. Our room, No.9 had just been refurbished and it was very nicely done. The bathroom is very large, fresh and clean, it had a 'P' shaped bath a lovely power shower and plenty of hot water.
We also had a large balcony off our bedroom overlooking a beautifully well kept garden which was a very peaceful space to sit relax and enjoy the scenery especially if you're lucky enough to be blessed with good weather.
The hotel is in quite an isolated position, a tiny hamlet with no shops but a perfect springboard for the many walks across Dartmoor and for visiting the pretty little towns of Lynton & Lynmouth which are only a short drive away.
Once in the Staghunters though you don't need to venture any further afield, the food was wonderful, a varied selection of good value meals are available and the portions were very generous.
We felt totally relaxed after a couple of nights here and went home with batteries recharged!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with the balcony overlooking the garden

Greeted rather oddly in a "reception" which seems to be a junk room full of pictures and stuff
R oom was fine, but furnished as if from a job lot from an auction. Duvet was thinner than I believed possible
Shower was exce lent, best thing in the room, altho no hot water after 8.30

Dining room is in fact the bar, and VERY dog friendly, to the point of poor hygiene

Tables were allocated by room number, so you come late, you get a rubbish table. We complained and were stared at the rest of the evening. We left early and went elsewhere

Aloofness, whilst an undesirable quality is relatively harmless, but when it is coupled with rudeness to our friendly staff it becomes a bore. So it was a relief when the " lady " and her younger companion left.

As for her feeble complaints; pictures in the reception office......oh come on!

Staring - hardly, we run a busy bar but do scan the room to check everything is going smoothly.

I can assure potential guests there is hot water 24/7.

Our duvets are all 13.5 tog, adequate for most people in centrally heated rooms, if required blankets are readily available.

We randomly reserve tables unless guests request a particular table. We proudly have a score of 5 in food hygiene, which is the highest attainable by the Food Standards Agency.
The beautiful breakfast room, which overlooks the garden, serves as a dog free area for dining if so required.
Conversely guests can breakfast in the company of their canine companions in the bar lounge should they wish to.

Our furnishings, we feel, are right for the age of our ancient rural Inn, not pretentious, just good old fashioned English oak.

We are not boutique and neither are our prices!

From Richard, my family and excellent team.

Wonderful setting - peaceful quiet valley, next to the river. We saw deer and a dipper from the bedroom window.
Rooms full of character and an extremely comfortable bed.
Friendly and helpful owners and staff, we were made to feel very welcome.
Lovely breakfasts and tasty evening meals.
Added bonus of live folk music one evening.

We had a lovely two night stay here last weekend. The staff were very helpful and friendly, they came from as far afield as Bulgaria, Germany and the Basque Country! Great food and a lovely warm atmosphere in the bar. Although the Stag Hunters is in a very secluded valley, it's just a few minutes drive to the coast, making it a perfect place to stay. If you're looking for a boutique hotel, then this probably isn't for you, but if you want relaxation, friendliness and service with a smile, then I thoroughly recommend it.

Had a wonderful break away from city life. Its such a lovely place and the staff can't do enough for you. So laid back and easy going. The food is wonderful and you get so much. I'm a vegetarian and there is plenty of delicious food to choose from.

Like the fact you can take your dogs with you and they are welcome to dine with you in the pub lounge. I will definately be going back with my dogs and can't wait.
