“Great Location, Great Lunch”
Reviewed August 10, 2010

We didn't stay at the Red Lion but visited for lunch on a day trip by boat. The Inn is away from the waterfront - around 5 - 10 mins stroll up the road from the busy shoreline but is worth it. There was a good selection of food (and real ales) on offer served by very friendly staff. The food was very reasonably priced including the Ploughmans lunch (most places charge a premium for some reason). If you visit on a sunny day, I can recommend the garden terrace which affords a fantastic view across the Dart valley (see photo).

This is a MUST AVOID. On arriving at 4pm the room was not ready and had to be 'cleaned'. On inspection it was dirty, with a stained carpet and a pubic hair in the bed. The whole pub/hotel/post office (it is all these combined!) was covered in the hairs of the two dalmatians roaming around. We arrived back that evening to find we'd been locked out! It was only by chance and insistence that we found a friend of the cleaner who eventually let us in. The bed and bedding smelled dirty and night and we refused to stay for breakfast as we could not face more squalor. We told the lady the place was FILTHY AND NEEDED TO BE CLOSED AND REFURBISHED and in not way could they justtify charging £95 per night. We also pointed out the lousy reviews on the WEB. She was not particularly apologetic - just has no idea of cleanliness or customer service.

We had Room 1 which had an amazing view, a lovely deep bath, and a very comfortable bed. The substantial and enjoyable breakfasts were at the very civislised times of between 9 and 10, and we coudlnt have felt more welcome. We had everything that we could have wanted. the hardworking staff man a facility which is the general store, a hotel, a post office and also serves great meals which is very handy. The roads are very narrow, and you shouldn't always believe your satnav- ours took us a very circuitous route to get to Dittsham. After visiting Dartmouth the next day, we were so pleased we had stayed at Dittisham, so quiet and relaxing, but can access everywhere by ferry. great walks and beautiful scenery, and lovely hosts

What a delightful small inn in a small village near Dartmouth. It houses the local store and post office as well as operating as a hotel. The bar area is small but adequate and the restaurant had a great view over the valley to the water. They had a marvelous chef as we had one of the best meals I have eaten anywhere in the world. We found the rooms to be big and comfortable also offering a delightful view. Staff were a little quirky but friendly and helpful.

Nothing has changed since the review of September 2008. We were just greeted with "name" and "I'll get the woman who deals with rooms". The woman who deals with rooms was equally dismissive and to quote the previous report "surly". The pub was shabby and had definitely seen better days. The "superior" room did have a view of the river which was about 300 yards away. The room was stark and unwelcoming but the bedlinen was clean. The balcony adjacent to the room had two very rusty chairs and a table - "work in progress" we were told.

We have never been made to feel more unwelcome. "I hope you don't expect breakfast before 9 o' clock". We paid for one night out of three booked and moved on.

The place has potential but requires a change of attitude by staff and a good deal of money spending on the place.

We stayed 1 night in this establishment which was 1 night too many in our view. We were extending out holiday by 1 night after staying in the village for a week in a cottage. We were literally dumping our bags and going out thankfully.

We should have known as we walked up the back steps that things were not going to be good. The paving slabs were wobbly, the garden furniture had seen better days, there were weeds everywhere and the gate was held on by elastic. The only positive thing was that you could see the river from the so called terrace.

Check-in was not very welcoming. We were shown to room known as “the flat” which has 2 double rooms, kitchen and bathroom by a very surly woman. The corridor on the approach to the room was very tired, the paint work was all scuffed/shoddy and the carpet wasn’t very clean at all. On entering the room, I couldn’t quite understand why we were charged £90 per night for it. We had a river view if you could see through the dead plants, cigarette butts and half pints of beer that had been left on the window ledge. The room was very tired to say the least. The carpet was filthy, dust everywhere, dead spider/flies on the window ledges, broken blind/curtains. The kitchen area wasn’t much better, there wasn’t even a cup/mug in the kitchen that we could use. The dishwasher was falling apart and the cooker hadn’t been cleaned since it had been installed. The bathroom was a dark room at the end of the corridor that led to the 2nd bedroom. The carpet in the bathroom was disgusting. The doors were hanging off of the bathroom cabinet, the grouting was dirty and the sealant on the bath/sink was rotten. We didn’t use the 2nd bedroom as it hadn’t been made up but this was about the same standard, tired furnishings and more dirty carpets. The room was right next to the generator/fan so we had a rude awakening around 07.00 when this started up.

The breakfast the next morning wasn’t much better either. It is served after 09.00 in the soulless back room of the pub. The carpeted floor was covered in dog hairs which isn’t surprising with 2 Dalmatians running around the whole time. When we arrived at breakfast was greeted by the same surly woman and told to take a seat on one of the made up tables. We were then shown where the cereal was and to help ourselves to the milk/juice/coffee. The fridge where the milk/juice jugs were kept was dirty as were the surfaces where the cereals were. A hot breakfast was served too although portions were very small. I chose the vegetarian option (beans, hash brown, mushrooms and tomatoes) but my husband had the full works. His was very greasy and the bacon/sausages were just full of gristle. We didn’t even get a choice of white/brown or more toast, just 2 slices of processed white bread that wasn’t even that warm.

On checking out I told the surly woman that I don’t know how they can charge £90 for that room. Her response was that it was the end of the summer and this is their last resort room?! The staff here just haven’t got a clue about being hosts or customer service. It’s such a shame as so much could be done with this place if it was run by the right people.

We have been to this village 3 times now and know that The Red Lion is under new management, unfortunately not to its advantage.

Dittisham itself is a beautiful village on the River Dart. There are much better places to eat/stay in the village – DO NOT STAY HERE.
