“Nice hotel - pity about the birds...”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

A very pleasant hotel in its own grounds - very peaceful. We had a lovely room, nicely furnished with its own balcony Not much of a view it must be said. Comfortable bed, and super shower. loads of hangers in the wardrobe (that's unusual!)
It was a hot night so we slept with the windows wide open. No complaints about that. But we had a dreadful night's sleep. Why? Because of the b****y sea gulls! They were screaming all night long! Difficult to get a wink of sleep. What is it with South Devon gulls? We have plenty of gulls in North Devon, but they are orderly birds, who go to bed at sunset, and don't wake up till morning.
Now I know this is not the fault of the management, I am just reporting the facts.
Otherwise no real problems. Cooked breakfast was good, though it could have been warmer. The indoor pool looked O K, though definitely on the small size. The public rooms were comfortable and well furnished with lots of books, games and magazines available. On balance, I would say the management tried hard to please their guests.... but I'm not sure we will be going back!

The hotel was very clean and welcoming, the staff friendly and helpful with nothing too much trouble. The meals were of excellent quality and plentiful. From the point of arrival on 15th July to departure (11 nights in total) it enabled a relaxed stay. The weather was hot but a room fan was immediately offered and supplied. Had a room with a balcony overlooking the gardens and outdoor pool with views also over the sea. The gardens were open to local people but this did not detract from the stay as there is plenty of room.

Room Tip: Sea view is probably the nicest, even better with a balcony.

This was our fourth visit to the Langstone Cliff Hotel. After three visits with our children, we returned after a break of a few years with my wife's parents, aunt and our teenage daughter. We booked three rooms, a single, a standard double and a family room with balcony and stayed at the beginning of July.
The hotel itself is located in beautiful grounds which include an outdoor pool, a tennis court a small wood, stables and a huge lawn with a beautiful view over the sea. There's an outdoor terrace in the olde English style where you can sit and enjoy the view and there are several very comfortable public areas inside the hotel where guests can sit and chat, drink, play cards etc and it's all decorated in that typical English plush carpet-sanderson wallpaper-velvet curtain-chesterfield sofa style which makes it a great place to relax. The hotel is very child friendly and there are both outside and inside play areas for children so you can always find a little corner to relax in peace and quiet even if there are several families around. There is a large indoor pool which we used every day and often had it to ourselves.
The bar and it's staff is great and reasonably priced. The restaurant is very good with friendly attentive service and a good choice of food. Breakfast is buffet style and you can choose either buffet or table service for the evening meal, although the food is the same so you might as well take the buffet so you can see what it looks like before you choose. The food quality is good, but don't expect cordon bleu.
There are several different types of room from small singles to family units with up to three separate bedrooms so, basically, you pay your money and take your choice. Our family room with one double and one single bed was very good with a large balcony with a fantastic view over the grounds towards the sea. Bathroom was clean, modern and well equipped. The standard double was much smaller with no balcony and a view to the rear of the hotel over the woods and stable. The standard single was even smaller, but remember that these rooms are priced accordingly. As I mentioned earlier, you pay your money and take your choice. If your children are under ten, they stay free sharing accomodation with their parents, so the family suites are probably the best value for families with young children. If a view and your own balcony are important to you, then the go for the "with balcony" rooms. Note the prices on the hotel website are per person, not per room.
It's a five minute walk to the sandy Dawlish Warren beach. You can take a local train from here to Exeter which takes about 30 minutes. Also, don't miss the spectacular walk past Langstone Cliff into Dawlish town along the seafront (unless it's high tide). Finally, the Mount Pleasant pub located about 200 yards from the hotel entrance is worth a visit. It's a bit touristy but the beer is good and the views over Dawlish Warren to Exmouth are spectacular.

Very nice 3 star Hotel. The staff were very helpful and always keen to assist. The rooms were clean and comfortable; the weather was very hot so rooms a little warm at night. The outside balcony could have done with a clean and some decoration. We had a balcony overlooking the back of the Hotel which was great for privacy, the ones overlooking the pool were very public.Breakfast was adequate but not a great deal of selection at the buffet.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are more private

We stayed here for 3 nights to celebrate our Pearl Anniversary. We arrived a bit too early to get into our room, but we spent the spare time in the indoor pool which was great after the journey. Everything in the hotel was super - room, food, staff, gardens and sports facilities. If we had known just how child friendly the hotel was we would most likely not have booked, but the children (from 3 months to teens) were so well catered for that we hardly knew they were there.

Generally, we holiday overseas, but have promised ourselves a return trip for our 35th anniversary.

Room Tip: The rooms with balconies and great views were overlooking public areas and not very quiet but the vi...

Our group of 64 ballroom dancers stayed for a weekend of dancing, Please note that the dancing was organised by our own leader not the hotel. The hotel is good but lacks air con in the rooms although fans were available from reception. In general staff are excellent, we never saw our room cleaner as she was really efficient and thoroughly cleaned the room. The waiters and bar staff were so friendly and nothing was too much for them. However the reception staff seemed aloof and there was never a "good morning" or even a sign of recognition, they definately let the hotel down. The food was good and service superb, the waiters do make the stay special. The dance facilities are brilliant, a good sized dance floor and I would recommend the hotel to other Dance groups. The hotel is an easy walk to the beach.

Room Tip: Upstairs balcony rooms have better views and are able to keep doors open at night.

Stayed with my husband for a 4 night birthday break. Staff very friendly, breakfast fantastic and bar meals delicious. Love the location, lawns, easy walks to the Warren and Dawlish.
Weather was fantastic so loved being able to sit outside until sundown. Noticed how family friendly this hotel was and wished I had discovered it when my son was young.
Really want to return for another battery recharge.

Only downside was that air con in bedroom was very noisy so we switched it off at night and so room was hot. If it had bothered me too much I would have reported it - weather was extremely warm so probably normally would not have been an issue
