Welcome Family Holiday Park
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 25, 2013

Returned this weekend from a family holiday here, with my wife, daughter and in-laws. Welcome Family is a great park and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

Check-in

The in-laws arrived an hour or so before us before even 12.00, and despite being well before check-in time were allowed to check-in for both of our caravans.

Caravans

We booked 2x Moonlight caravans, so the cheapest accommodation. Our van (41) on first inspection was basic, not new, but clean. We did notice that there was some water on the floor of the shower room, but guessed that it may have been as a result of the cleaning and being in the van early so mopped it up with a cloth. Later on, on returning from the club in the evening we noticed that the carpet on one side of the double bedroom close to the bathroom was damp. As it was late we decided to leave it til the morning. The following morning we realised that the damp area was much larger, that there was again a puddle on the shower room floor, and that the carpet in the twin bedroom was saturated. I reported it to reception, and a maintenance man was round straight away. He set to work, though the wife was not happy with remaining as the weather wasn't brilliant so the carpets wouldn't dry quickly, and as well as having a 3 year old daughter I have asthma, the receptionist allocated us a larger 3 bed caravan (72) with flat screen tv, and a much more up to date feel inside. We were offered assistance to move across which we declined. Top marks for service!

Site

Welcome Family is a pretty large site, situated between the railway line and the road through Dawlish Warren. Our van was close to the railway line and while you could hear the trains, it never once disturbed our sleep. The site was always clean and appeared well maintained. Wifi is free which is great, but occasionally can be a bit slow, or difficult to connect, though to me this probably isn't the highest priority!

Pool

Having spent the last couple of UK holidays at sites with naff swimming pools we really enjoyed the pool complex here. The changing rooms were clean and tidy, and the pools were of a decent temperature, thought the active pool was noticeably cooler than the others! Our little girl loved it in here, and it was a real highlight of the holiday.

Entertainment

The entertainment was a real highlight. The bluecoats were excellent with the kids, and our little girl loved doing the dances and the games. Highlight was the Joseph night, where she was one of the kids given a walk on part despite her age (though she was very tired by the end). We tended to come in early so she could dance and take part in the kids games, go to the JRC and we would turn in a little bit after that as she was tired. Drinks prices were pretty decent for a holiday park. We also ate in the park on our first night from the Welcome Bite, and found the prices and quality to be good.

Location

Dawlish Warren is a lovely place for a family holiday, and close to many other places along the riviera. We found the local 'tourist shops' to be cheaper than in some other resorts, and Gerald's Supermarket across the road to be well priced. For a decent shop Sainsbury's is only 5 minutes drive away. The park seemed to be the nicest looking in the immediate vicinity.

Overall this is the first time I have been to this part of Devon and we really enjoyed it, and as the park was so good we would love to come back, though this time I fancy one of the lodges..

This is the perfect family resort for children of all ages

We stayed in a bungalow type accommodation, we had everything we needed & more

Whilst my little girl stayed with us many of the children around the complex were so excited about the club house both day & night.

The blue coats were great fun with lots of enthusiasm regardless of what time of day it was.

The entertainment team should be on the TV or in a professional Broadway show they are so good, my only thought on entertainment would be that not all children are aware of a Broadway Shows meaning the kids became very board near the end.

My 5yr old daughter still tells everyone about the Joseph night and the spin the wheel when Elvis showed his under pants due to not being able to get into his costume – hilarious

I am fully aware the owner/site can not check everyone who books with them but I would suggest they should always have at least one child with to maintain the family value & Image

Some of the other guests (I believe private owners) were very inconsiderate towards others by smoking at the main club door & allowing under 5s to use the toilets on their own whist they sat drinking!!!! Whilst it didn’t bother others it was very alarming to me as I don’t allow my daughter anywhere without me or her dad.

I did mention the toilet situation to Mr Price who tried his best to sort my concerns

All in all a great weeks holiday with fab weather

Our Bluecoats do an amazing job of offering a great mix of entertainment suitable for families of all ages. This year we have also introduced some earlier shows just for the little ones in case they are too tired to stay up for the later shows!

You are right – we do need to maintain and protect our (well earned) family market reputation. This is why we do not allow large groups or same sex groups.

We do have designated smoking areas, well away from the Club entrance, so we will ask our Club Door Staff to keep an eye on this - thank you for letting us know.

We arrived early on the Monday & reception kindly let us go in our casafina lodge early (bonus)
Lodge was lovely :) very spacious more than enough room for me, boyf, 2 girls (6+2) mum & sister. Food + drink in the club are very good priced... The entertaiment was ok got a bit boring by the end of the night as the bluecoats seemed to always sing?! I do think they need to switch it around a bit so its not signing every night!!
Swimming pool(s) are great my kids loved going to them.
All in all very nice place just dont think Dawlish was for us

Room Tip: Defo book a lodge or bungalow.. Caravans didnt look all that

Thank you very much for your review.

Our Bluecoats work very hard to make sure there is something for everyone. As well as the nightly West End Style shows (which undoubtedly will showcase their singing, dancing and comedy skills), we also run quizzes, game shows, bingo, talent shows and other competitions – all packed into an evening or two!

We’re surprised you didn’t seem to enjoy the area - with our enviable coastal location, a Blue Flag beach and a 500 acre Nature Reserve right on our doorstep - we feel our little slice of Devon really is a beautiful place to visit.

We have never claimed to have a view … we are a completely flat park (very handy for people who don’t like hills!), and just a 10 minute flat walk to our Blue Flag beach.

The caravans on our Park are sited in line with strict regulations set by our local council, not us. If you required a more pleasing outlook we have many bungalows and lodges overlooking beautifully landscaped areas.

Whilst we appreciate this type of holiday is obviously not for you, we feel it’s worth stating a few statistics … 194 reviews so far, 4 out of 5 stars, with a whopping 154 reviews in the Excellent and Very Good categories.

And finally … we have just had the Quality in Tourism annual assessment carried out and we are very pleased to learn we will be retaining our 4 star rating under the Visit England Holiday Park Scheme.

All in all, pretty good we think …

We stayed in a Moonlight caravan (which is the cheapest caravan) with our little dog from Mon – Fri in June. I just want to let everyone know that wants to take their dog with them that the caravan we had was great, it was immaculately clean and in a very good state of repair.
I was concerned that it might be dilapidated due to being an older van and allocated to dog owners, but that was far from the truth. In fact we would have been happy staying in it even without a dog. My grateful thanks to the people that clean the caravans (often the unsung heroes of a park) for their diligence and making sure that it was so clean. It was a nice touch to have tea bags, coffe and hot chocolate, with cups and teapot on a tray on the table to welcome you in and little portions of milk in the fridge. It is the first site we have stayed at that do that
The park itself is beautiful and the flowers and the gardens are a credit to the gardeners. It makes it so much nicer to stay somewhere where the owners take care of the site. It is good that children can play around the caravans and not worry about cars as you can only park in designated car parks, not that we had any children but appreciated that parents would find this a good thing. There are plenty of rubbish bins and recycle facilities and plenty of doggy bins as well. We had an early morning walk around the park with the dog each day and saw lots of bunny rabbits and the closeness of the railway line did not disturb us at all.
All the staff we came into contact with were very pleasant and helpful. Found we didn’t have a corkscrew and reported this to reception and 15-20 mins later one arrived via housekeeping, great service and we could then open the wine!!!!!
We enjoyed walking on the Warren with the dog and saw lovely wild orchids and irises. The car park on the Warren is free after 6pm, so lovely to go for an evening stroll along the sea wall towards Dawlish or the wild life reserve at the Warren.
Plenty of food choices around but in particular Ryders bakery across from the park has delicious items to tempt everyone. (Loved the Lardy cake) Penaligons chip shop on Warren road serve delicious cod and chips.
Thank you all for making our stay so enjoyable we would not hesitate to recommend Welcome Family to anyone, we had a fantastic few days and will try and go back again soon.
