“Beautiful peaceful place”

Following the photos, you hope not to be disappointed in the real thing but we arrived to the most beautifully renovated cottage.. The very first thing that struck us though , was the incredible peace sitting in the private back garden with a view to due for .... Bliss!! Then you wonder around a very warm cosy spotless beautiful cottage, renovated to the highest standard. Becks and Richard had left their personal touch with a wonderful cake, fresh eggs, milk and a great bottle of wine!
We were fortunate to have fab weather so we felt like we were in the middle of summer.. My only advice would be the need of a fan on very warm nights as upstairs gets hot but that's the only suggestion I could make! Wonderful hosts, cottage, peace and quiet, fab pubs nearby !! Will definitely go back... Lovely people... Great place for a romantic week/ weekend... Bliss!!!

“Great base for walking”

Just to clarify, this TA page applies to (& has photos & reviews for) two cottages; the Oak Barn & Widecombe Cottage. We stayed in the latter; the smaller of the two. Both cottages are situated in a farm alongside B&B facilities & the owners house. Widecombe Cottage is very pretty, clean & well appointed with a lovely wood burner & double-ended deep bath. We found the owners to be very friendly and helpful, without being overbearing. We received a lovely welcome (no details or we'd ruin the surprise!). The only down side is that Widecombe cottage sits alongside the owner's workshop so we occasionally heard drilling, banging & sawing noises; sometimes for protracted periods. The garden also runs alongside a thoroughfare used by the owners so if absolute solitude was your aim, you will be disappointed. Having said that, the owners took every care not to intrude. Unfortunately there was only ever enough hot water for one descent bath in the morning, so couples had better be prepared to share! Also, a note of caution for allergy sufferers; the bed has feather duvets & pillows. Lovely for some but sadly not for us. All in all a great cottage & base for exploring Dartmoor despite these small issues.

“relaxing stunning cottage in a perfect location”

my husband and I stayed in Widecombe cottage for my birthday .
we were fortunate that the weather was lovely so we could enjoy the fantastic walks on the moors and good food at the nearby Rugglestone inn then back to the cottage to relax.
our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer...maybe next time.

“Wonderful Location”

Had recently stayed in Oak Barn Cottage ( very spacious and with Sauna ) - however Oak barn was fully booked. The owner offered us the opportunity to stay in Widecombe Cottage, which is also in the hamlet of Venton. Widecombe Cottage is also very luxurious also has marvellous oak furniture , ( made by the owner ).
The cottage is well equipped and very cosy for two. Going outside the door at the rear of the property, there is seating and a Barbecue for the use of guests, whilst stretching out from the seat is a very large lawn and excellent views over the country side. We were lucky that the weather was so good - really enjoyed using the barbecue and sitting out late evening - absolute peace. After midnight we heard an owl and other countryside animals.
The owner and his wife are extremely helpful in sharing information ( Rugglestone Inn has to be visited - cider and food - good memories of a holiday ) . The owners have a flock of hens and eggs are readily available. There is also a shop in Widecombe for papers and other provisions. The hamlet of Venton leads to several walks on Dartmoor. It was great to go for long walks and then to have the luxury of returning to the cottage. David Thorpe

“Stunning luxury accommodation, in a beautiful and relaxing location”

The cottage is lovely - 5* quality throughout, with lots of thoughtful touches which made for a wonderful and thoroughly relaxing stay. The location is fabulous - walking distance to the Rugglestone Inn, and a great base for a week of walking in and around Dartmoor. Richard was an excellent host - available if we had any questions, and with some great recommendations for walks and beaches, but otherwise we were very much left to our own devices, exactly as we'd wish. Very highly recommended.

“The fabulous OAK BARN.”
Reviewed February 12, 2013 for a stay in February 2013

I took my family of four to stay in 'The Oak Barn' which is directly behind 'Widecombe Cottage' in Feb 2013.

The barn itself is a stunning renovation and everything from the bathroom and bedding to the kitchen is top quality. You can tell that no expense has been spared.
The owner Richard has excelled himself in creating a truly luxurious and comfortable holiday venue. I should mention he was very friendly and helpful throughout our stay.

There were a quite a few special touches too, such as the complimentary freshly baked bread and wine waiting for you to devour after a long car journey.

My wife especially loved her bathing experience in the rolltop bath, and I admit to taking excessively long power showers in the wet room after long moor walks.

Even in February the barn was toasty warm due to the underfloor heating, in fact so much so we had to turn all the room thermostats down!

The barn itself is in a peaceful quiet location, and just a 4 minute walk from an excellent food pub 'The Rugglestone Inn'. On the rare occasions when we did eat-at-home it was a pleasure to prepare and cook in the granite topped kitchen and chop on the free-standing oak butchers block.

In summary, this is easily the best UK self-catering we have stayed in, and deserved of it's 99% Excellent rating. I suggest you just book it, don't even hesitate!
